Description

aient @titi FRIEDRICH HOPPE, OF STUTTGART, GERMANY, ASSIGNUR T0 THEODOR HAHN. e
Letters Patent No. 102,820, dated May 10, 1870; dntedatd April 28, 1870.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part cf the sama,
To na'tlwhom it may concern A Be it known that I, Fmnnmen Horen, locksmith of the court in Stuttgart, in the Kingdom of vVurtemberg, Germany, have invented a, new :md useful Improvement in Locks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a clear and exact description of the nature thereof, suticient to enable others skilled in the nrt to which my invention appertains to fully nnderstnnd and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings making part of this specificaltion, in which the iignre is a. view of the interior of the lock. j-
My intention relates to that class of locks in which there are no springs, but in place thereoi` n weight or weights, which answer' the same purpose; and
It consists in joiuting a weight to the piece which raises one end oi' the latch, which is also adapted to act as the locking-bolt, whereby advzuxtnges aregaineth as will be hereinafter more fully described.
In the draw'in'gse a represents the bolt und latch, which basa fulcrum on a pin or stud, e, and describes the are ot' :L'circle in the direction 1,2.
' I) is the tumbler, which may be pivoted to said bolt and latch a and more with it.
c is the ilut, through which passes the spindle of the knob, and to it is secured `the raising-lever la, which is adapted to be pressed down against the rear end of the bolt, and thereby elevate its front end.
This raising-lever is joint-ed, as at g, to one end of a weighted piece, d,.`whose freevend is intended to b ear against the upper` side of the tumbler b, or aproyection thereof'.
It will be seen that when the device is employed as 'a latch, the'lever h is causedto raise the latch a, whereby it can be withdrawn from the keeper.
1n order to lock the bolt a, the key is properly introduced into the casing, and, on being manipulated, clears the tumbler of the pin e and advances the bolt.
The weight (l constantly bears against the tumbler,
:ind causes it to drop on the pin e at the proper time, and thereby returns the bolt in a locked position.
The joint between the weight (l :md lever h allows the former to be elevated bythe forward motion of tumbler without moving the lever h, whereby the latter offers no resistance to said motion, which would not be the result if the. lever and weight were rigidly secured together.
I dispense with springs, and produce :l combined
