which Figure 1 is a top plan view of my improved tender end sill. Fig. 2 is a front elevational view, partly in section, of my improved tender end sill. Fig. 3 is an end elevational viewof the same.
This invent-ion relates to a new and useful improvement in end sills designed particularly for tender underframes, and while shown as a separate casting in the drawings, it could be an integral part of the underframe.
The particular feature of my present i11- vention is the provision of step extensions at each end of the end sill, said extensions being preferably integral with the end sill,
provided with means for retaining wooden treads, which latter are bolted or otherwise secured in posit-ion. These wooden treads, of course, could be replaced by integral metal treads, if desired.
In the drawings, 1 indicates the end sill which may be of any approved construction with respect to its interior bracing members, but preferably this end sill has front and rear vertical walls 2 and 3, which at the end sills are extended downwardas at 4 to form supports for the stops.
The end wall of the end sill is cut away as at 5 to provide a flat opening, and on the bottom wall 6 are preferably arranged flanges 6 constituting retaining walls for the tread portion '7. Other flanges 6 are arranged at diiferent points to support similar treads 7. r
I claim:
1. An end sill, having its end wall removed so that the bottom wall thereof will constitute a tread, said end sill having integral downward extensions at each end, said extensions being also provided with treads.
,2. Thecombination with an end sill having open ends so that the end portions of its bottom wall constitute treads and removable tread plates positioned on the end portions of said bottom wall.
3. An end sill having its end wall removed so that the bottom wall thereof constitutes a step, tread plates applied to the end portions of the botom wall, depending walls at the ends of said end sill, transversely disposed plates between said depending walls, and removable tread plates positioned on said transversely disposed plates.
4. A cast metal end sill having its ends open so that the end portions of the bot-tom wall of said sill form,steps, and tread plates applied to the end portions of said bottom wall.
