Be 1t known that I, ARTHURl EHLERT, a
subject of the Emperor of Germany, resid` ing at 16 Mittelstrasse, Wollin, Wollin Island, Germany, barrister, (whose postoiiice address is 16. Mittelstrasse, Wollin, Tollin Island, Germany,) have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Igniting Devices,` of which the following is a specification. l
This invention relates to igniting devices of the kind operated by means of a. pyrophorous metal for example cerium-iron or the like. Such an igniting device forms in combination with a receptacle for a combustible fluid, benzin for example, an igniter which can be constructed in any desired manner and be placed on a wall, on a table or carried in the pocket.
The ignit-ing device consists of a staff-like body, which when not in use is kept in the igniter-holder or receptacle, being immersed in the liquid contents thereof. In order to produce a flame the igniting device is taken out of its holder, and the eii'ective end of it is drawn over a file or friction surface arranged on the holder, whereby sparks are produced which ignite a wick.
As compared with such devices as heretofore made, the new igniting device which forms the subject of the presentinvention has the important advantages: (l) That in consequence of the arrangement of the wick, which is surrounded by the pyrophorous metal, ignition must always be reliably effected; (2) it is not necessary thai the striking should beeffected in any, particular direction and the igniting device can be held in any manner as desired; 3) the file is not moistenedand a failure to act cannot arise from this cause; and (4) when the striking is effected the wick is not cut up on the file as hitherto. l
The wick, as well as the pyrophorous metal can be easily regulated with regard to the length i projecting from the staff-like body: and,`whe,n worn out, new parts can be readily substituted.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing.
Figure l is an elevation, the igniter-holder or receptacle being vshown partially in section; Fig. 2 represents the igniting-device' in section; Fig. 3 1s an inverted plan of same. Figs.` 4 and 5 illustrate another form, the effectivepart being shown in inverted plan. Figs.l 6 and 7 are similar views illustrating a further modification; Figs. 8 and 9 represent pieces of pyrophorous metal in combination with brass casings, which are intended to 'be fixed on the igniting device by means of screw-threads.
In the form shown in Figs. l to 3 the igniting device consists Vof a tubular casing a, provided at the top with an extension b that is screw-threaded or of conical form and which serves for effecting the fixing of the tube in the igniter-holder c. The extensionl piece b is preferably provided witha. lhandle d. 40n the lower end of, thevtube a is a-screw-socket f which is intended, in a inanner similar to that in a pencil-case, to hold a piece of pyrophorous metal or the like g, the`length to which this extends from the socket f being capable ofregulation. The piece of pyrophorous metal g is of tubular form and in theb'oring thereof is a wick h which extends, or is compressed into the' interiorof the tube a, so that it can absorb and retain a quantity of the liquid vcontained in the igniter-holder c. On the igniter-holder c a friction-surface or file z' is provided.

The essential novelty of the described igniting-device is that the wick to be ignited is surrounded by the pyrophorous metal.
The advantages obtained thereby are set out l in the introduction.
In the form of the invention illustrated in Figs. l, 2 and 3 the piece of pyrophorous metal is constructed in tubular form. In the forms shownin Figs. 4 and 5, and in Figs. 6 and 7 of the drawings, thin solid metal bodies g in the form of pins are used and these are so arranged that the wick h lies between` two, three or more of such pins- These pins g and the wick k aire .figed in sockets f, which are constructedv'for example as clamping or screw-sockets. lu these I forms of the invention the fundamental idea of the invention, that of surrounding the wick with pyrophorous metal, is preserved.
As shown in Figs. 8 and 9 the pieces of pyrophorous metal g may be fixed in metal tubes or on brass-tubes. When the striking is effected with this form the metal tubes le. are worn by contact with the file i. The
` tubes Ix: may be fixed to the tube a by means of screw-threads and in combination Vwith their pieces of metal g form the supplementary renewable parts of the device.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent issl. A pyrophorous igniting device comprising a body of pyrophorous material and a wick within said body.
2. A. pyrophorous igniting device comprising a tube of v pyrophorous material closed at one end and a wick within said tube and projecting partly through the open end of said tube.
3. A pyrophorous igniting device comprising a body of pyrophorous material, a wick within said body, an adjustable clamping socket for said body, and an igniter holder having means whereby said socket can be adjustably clamped thereto.
4. A pyrophorous igniting device comprising a body of pyrophorous material, a wick within said body, a tube to which said body is fixed, and means for securing said tube to the casing of the igniter holder, substantially as described and for the purpose stated.
5. A pyrophorous igniting device comprising a body of pyrophorousmaterial, a wick within said body, a tube to which said body is xed, and means for securing said tube to the casing of the igniter helder, an adjustable clamping socket for said body, and an igniter holder having means Whereby said socket can be adjustably clamped thereto, substantially as described.
