1 tachments and the object of the invention is to provide a device wherein the necessity of inserting an additional sheet each time a letter or paper is to be written, can be avoided.

A further object of the invention is the provision of an attachment wherein a roll of paper is employed and which may be fed to the typewriter in the usual manner. Provision is also made for severing the sheet at suited intervals, a gage being used to de termine the length of the sheet.

Further objects of the invention will appear as the following specific description is read in connection with the accompanying drawings, which form apart of. this application, and in which: I i

Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 represents a frame which may be at tached to the typewriter in any suitable manner and which carries bearings 2 having a roller 3 journaled therein upon which is wound the paper adapted to be used. This paper may be printed or plain and passes forwardly over the-frame and "down over the apron l of the typewriter to the platen 5 in the usual manner.

Secured to the frame 1 and lyingabove the platen 5 is an L-shaped plate 6 which is supported upon standards 7. The portion of the plate 6 which is attached to the frame is provided with extensions 8" and 9, the

latter of which is provided with a longitudinal slot 10 adapted to receive a tran sverse bolt 11 removably carried bythe movable blade 12 of the shears, the opposite cutting blade being formed by sharpening the edge of the plate 6 where the two right angular portions join each other, as shown at 13. The opposite end of the blade 12 is pivotally connected to the extension 8 by means of a link 14 which carries, intermediate its length, a plunger .15 having a push button 16 secured to its outer end. s

Mounted upon a shaft extending across the table 6 and held inresilient engagement therewith by a spring 17 is a clamping plate 18 which isprovided on its under side with a rubber, or other friction strip, 19. adapted i to prevent wrinkling of the paper and to in sure an even cut, as will be hereinafter described. Extending upwardly from the clamping plate 18 is an arm 20 having a hooked end 21 adapted to engage over the blade 12, when the latter is raised to inoperative position to cause the plate 18 to be carried therewith. .The blade 12 is normally raised to inoperative position by a spring 22 which surrounds the extension 9 between the end of the blade and the collar 23. This 7 spring is considerably stronger than the spring 17 and therefore overcomes the latter so that whenplunger 15 is released the blade 12 will be raised to inoperative position and will carry with it the plate 18 through the intermediary of the hooked arm 20. The paper passes overthe apron 1 and over the table 6 from the platen 5 and runs upon a support 24: inclined at an angle from the table 1 and provided with a pairof springs 35 25'which hold the paper down upon the support and prevent it from flying around. The edge of the table is provided with a suitable scale 26 and mounted to operate over the scale is a pointer 27 which indicates the proper position of the paper when a sheet of the required length has been reached. The push button 16 is then forced inwardly, thus causing the outer end of the blade 12 to slide along the extension 9, the link 14 forcing the same across the blade 13, thus giving a shearing motion of the blade 12 across the blade 13 and properly severing the paper. The paper is clamped on the table at thistime by the plate 18 as the arm 20 is released from the blade 12 and the springs 17 free to act. When the plunger 15 is, released the blade 12 is returned to normal position under the influence of the spring 22, and the plate 18 will be raised from the table 6 by reason of the engagement of the blade beneath the arm 20. Thus the paper upon the, table is released and may be fed forwardly over the support 21 by manipulating the platen in the usual manner.

Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new is 1. A typewriter attachment comprising a mounting frame, a paper roll holder carried thereby, a supporting table, means to clamp the paper thereon, means coacting with the table for severing the paper, and means c0- acting with the severing means for holding the clamping means in inoperative position when the severing means is in inoperative position.

2. A typewriter attachment comprising a mounting frame, a paper 'roll holder carried thereby, a supporting table, a clamping plate pivoted to the supporting table, means for holding the clamping plate in engagement with the table, and means comprising in part one element of a paper severing device for holding the clamping plate in inoperative position.

3. A typewriter attachment comprising a mounting frame, a paper roll holder carried thereby, a supporting table, a spring pressed clamping plate pivoted upon the table and normally held in engagement therewith, a hook arm carried by the clamping plate, a severing blade carried by and coacting with the table to sever the paper, said blade adapted to engage the hook arm on the clamping plate, and means for normally holding the blade in inoperative position against the action between said blade holdmg means.
