Description

NPETiRs, PHOTO-LITHOGRAPNER, WASHINGTON J C UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE..
SEPTIMUS C. STOKES, OF MANCHESTER, NEW HAMPSHIRE.
l IMPROVEMENT IN KNIFE-SHARPENERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. l02,727, dated May 3, 1870.
To a/ZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, SEPTrMUs C. S'roKEs, of Manchester, in the county of Hillsborough and State of New Hampshire, have invented cert-ain new and useful Improvements in Knife- Sharpeners 5 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the' construction and arrangement of an improved knifesharpener, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, in which- Figure I is a side'view.
A represents the handle, of any suitable construction, to which the Sharpener is attached.
On the side of the handle A are attached two plates, B and kC, of the peculiar form shown in Fig. l-th'at is, having each a projection, a, on the upper edge, and another, b, on the lower edge. The two plates are both alike, but turned in opposite directions, and both pivoted to the handle by bolts or screws d and e. The bolt d passes through a slot in the side of the outer plate, C, and through a hole in the lower plate, B, thus pivoting the latter, while the screw or bolt e passes through a hole in the opposite edge of the outer plate, and through a slot in the inner plate, pivoting the former. It will thus be seen that the two plates are pivoted in opposite edges, and that the projections orthumb-pieces act and bb may be .brought closer together orfarther apart, as may be desired.
On the outer face of the inner plate, B, and on the inner face of the outer plate, U, is an inclined recess, in which the steel bars D D are inserted. Said recesses running inopposite directions, the bars cross each other, forming an angle in which to sharpen the knife.
On Athe screw e is pivoted a' lever, E, provided with a projection, z', which is bent inward, so that when the lever is turned up in proper position said projections will press on the outer plate, C, and firmly lock the plates and steel bars together,'while when the lever is turned down the plates are loosened, and the plates and bars may be adjusted as desired.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In combination with the plates B and C, the lever E, with projection z', arranged to operate substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
2. The combination of the handle A, plates B C, bars D, and lever E, all constructed as described, and arranged to operate substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth. 1
' In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
SEPTIMUS C. STORES.
