ROBERT WOERNER, OF MANNHEIM, GERMANY.
CIGAR-PRESSING BOX.
Y, Application filed February 1, 1911. Serial No. 605,894.
To all whom it 'may concern.-
Be it known that I, ROBERT VOERNER, a subject of the Grand Duke of Baden, residing at Mannheim, in the Grand Dukedom of Baden, Empire of Germany, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cigar- Pressing Boxes, of which the following is a specilication.
The known cigar-pressing boxes present the defect, that in alternating layers of cigars containing one cigar less than the other layers the extreme cigars do not come at all -in contact with the walls of the box, so that the cigars in these layers do not receive the same pressure as the cigars in the other layers, and are therefore apt to shift during the compression of the parcel of cigars in the box and to turn out irregular in shape.
My invention relates to improvements in cigar-pressing boxes, whereby a uniform compression of all the cigars in the box, even under a strong pressure, is insured, so that all the cigars in the several layers receive perfectly regular surfaces.
The chief improvement consists in insertions disposed on the side parts of the pressing box and adapted to fill up the spaces left between the extreme cigars and the walls in those layers having one cigar less t-han the other layers. These insertions are preferably made vertically movable on the side parts, so as to be able to adjust them to the varying diameter of the cigars. By these improvements the advantage is obtained, that the pressing-box can be utilized for cigars of various sizes without exchanging any of its parts.
I will now proceed to describe my invention with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure l, is a perspective view of a part of the cigar-pressing box and part of the cigars filling it, and Fig. 2, is a detail perspective view of one of the insertions.
The side parts b of the known cigar-pressing box are each provided with a number {lhere three) of insertions 0, which are s own to have the shape of semicylinders projecting from the side part I) and are adapted to fill up the spaces left between the walls and the extreme cigars e in those layers B, which have one cigar less than the other layers A. Preferably the insertions c are made from a suitable elastic material, so that they can be closely applied to the cigars Specication of Letters Patent.

and permit the box to be used for cigars of various sizes. While in the layers A the extreme cigars e come in contact with the side parts b, the cigars e in the other layers B will come in contact with the insertions c, so that during the compression of the cigarpressing box all of the cigars e are uniformly subjected to the same pressures from the various sides and consequently receive perfectly regular surfaces.
The insertions c are preferably made vertically movable on the side parts b in any known manner. For example the side parts b may be provided with vertical parallel pairs of opposite grooves d, in which flanges c c on the insertions o can engage. Then the insertions c can be vertically adjusted in accordance with the varying thickness of the cigars e. The insertions c may be covered with layers of rubber of about two millimeters thickness for saving the cigars. The insertions c may have any other shape than shown.
I claim:
l. The combination with a side part for cigar-pressing boxes, of plurality of independent insertions on said side part adapted to lill up the spaces between a succession of alternating layers of cigars having one cigar more than the other layers.
2. The combination with a side part for cigar pressing boxes, of movable insertions adapted to lill up the spaces between alternating layers of cigars having one cigar more than the other layers, and means for adjusting said movable insertions on said side part in a direction at right angles to the layers.
3. The combination with a side part for cigar-pressing boxes, of independent insertions of elastic material on said side part and adapted to fill up the spaces between alternating layers of cigars having one cigar more than the other layers.
4. The combination with a side part for cigar-pressing boxes, of movable insertions of elastic material adapted to fill up the spaces between alternating layers of cigars having one cigar more than the other layers, and means for adjusting said movable insertions on said side part in a direction at right angles to the layers.
5. The combination with a side part for cigar-pressing boxes provided with grooves at right angles to the layers of cigars, of independent insertions of rounding transverse sections adapted to lill up the spaces in alternating layers of cigars having onecigar less cigar-pressing boxes provided With groovesat right angles to the layers of cigars, of invdependent insertions of roundingtransverse the spaces in alternating layers of cigars vleaving one cigar less than the other layers and provided with projections guided in the grooves of said side part.
