BOX-HANDLE OR THE LIKE.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOSEPH A. RAYMOND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Box-Handles or the Like, of which the following is a description.

My invention belongs to that general class of devices known as handles or the like, and relates particularly to a handle for attachment on boxes, chests, caskets, etc., for convenience in handling, having among its objects the production of a neat, simple, durable, efficient and satisfactory handle of the kind described, consisting of a minimum of parts and that may be manufactured at comparatively small cost and used wherever found applicable.

To this end my invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and combination of parts herein shown and described, and more particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the drawings, wherein like reference characters indicate like or corresponding parts, Figure 1 is a front elevation of my preferred form of handle. Fig. 2 is similar View with the handle raised, but in section, the section through the handle being taken substantially on line 2-2 through the dotted handle of Fig. 3. Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken substantially on line 33 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a view of a handle blank before being formed, as shown in the other figures. Fig. 5 is a plan View of a portion of the partially formed handle. Fig. 6 is an end elevation of the same, and Fig. 7 is a view somewhat similar to Fig. 3, showing how the parts are assembled.

Referring to the drawings: 1 is a base of suitable material for the handle, preferably of sheet metal and dished or swelled out as clearly shown in Fig. 3, to form the marginal rim or edges 7 that will fit against the box or casket.

The base is provided with screw holes 2 or their equivalents for the purpose, for attaching the base in position. The base is also provided with openings therethrough proximate to the ends, or where desired, and swelled outwardly so that the upper edges 4 of the openings are outwardly offset relative to the lower edges 5 of the openings, the upper and lower edges being preferably Specification of Letters Patent.

parallel. Below each of the openings, and preferably proximate to the lower edge 5, are one or more holes 66. While the base is shown of pressed sheet metal, it may of course be made of any suitable material and in any suitable manner.

The handle is formed from a blank 8 of sheet metal, substantially of a shape as shown in Fig. 4, in which 8 represents the handle proper provided with lateral extensions 9-9 and with the extensions 10-10 at the ends. The ends are preferably formed with one or more lateral prongs or extensions 13-13, two being shown, and end extensions 141. The handle when completed, is substantially as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, the extended parts 99 being bent until the edges meet as most clearly shown in Fig. 3, and the parts 10 bent so that they are substantially semi-cylindrical except at the ends, at which place the parts 1212 are preferably bent or formed so that they are parallel with each other and substantially at right angles to the upper face 11, which is straight. (See Fig. 2.) The ends 14 are bent down as shown, giving a finished and an attractive appearance to the ends when the handle is dropped, as shown in Fig. 3.

The manner of assembling the handle is most clearly shown in Fig. 7. As shown in the dotted lines, the handle part ends are inserted through the openings in the base with the extensions 13 past the inner side of the face of the base. The handle is then positioned substantially as shown in the full lines in Fig. 7 and the prongs or extensions 13 tapped back into the holes 66.

It will thus be seen that I have a handle composed of but two parts that are securely fastened together so that they cannot become accidentally separated. WVhen the handle is down or not in use it is attractive in appearance, and referring to Fig. 3, when the handle in use is raised, the upper face 11 at each end contacts with the edge 1 of the opening thereat and the lower edges of the extended parts 12 contact with the lower edge 5 of the opening in the base, so that there is no strain whatever upon the pivotal connection between the handle and the base. The prongs l3 serve only as a pivotal connection formaintaining the parts assembled, there being no strain whatever upon them, so that if desired but one prong 13 andhole 6 are necessary for each end. The ends of the handle being formed as shown give substantially a channel bar at the ends of great strength and rigidity.

Having thus described my invention it is obvious that various immaterial modifications may be made in same without departing from the spirit of my invention. Hence I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the exact form, arrangement, construction or combination of parts herein shown and described or uses mentioned.

That I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a device of the character described, a base having an opening therethrough, the upper edge of which is offset relative to the lower edge thereof, and a handle provided with an end portion projecting through the opening of the. base, said end portion being provided with means extending from the end thereof for pivotally engaging the wall of the base proximate the lower edge of the opening therein, and constituting the sole pivotal connection between the handle and base, and with portions arranged tocontact with the upper and lower edges of said opening when the handle is in operative position.

2. As an article of manufacture, a handle comprising a base having openings therethrough with the upper edges of said openings offset relative to the lower edges and with a hole therethrough proximate to the lower edge of each opening, in combination with a handle having its ends positioned in said openings, the sides of said handle ends bent substantially parallel to each other and provided with a prong at the edge of one side of each handle end proximate to the end thereof, said prongs extending through said holes in said base and constituting the sole pivotal connection between the handle and the base.

3. As an article of manufacture, a handle comprising a, base with a pair of openings therethrough, the upper edges of said openings parallel to and offset relative to the lower edges, said base provided with a hole proximate the lower edge of each of said openings, in combination with a handle bar having each of its ends bent to form a channel and provided with an extension on each end on one of the sides of said channel, said extensions extending through the holes in said base and bent substantially back upon themselves and constituting the sole pivotal connection between the handle and the base.
