Considering the gear 16 as relatively sta- .tionary, it Will be apparent that this movement of the gear 17 with the frame 18, will cause a. glven diameter of the gear 15 to 5 shift to the right or the left of its original in position with the frame 18 and the position, thus advancing or retarding the magnet shaft with reference to the gear 16 and therefore with reference to the crank gear 12. In Fig. 3 I have shown the parts gear 17 shifted to the right of the line connecting the central axes of the gears 15 and 16, in which case, considering the magneto shaft to be turning in the direction of the arrow, the' sparking 'period will be lagged. A
movement of saidgear and frame in the opposite direction will advance the sparking period. It is to be noted that the relative shift of the one predetermined diametric 4e axis of the magneto gear or driven gear relative to a certain diametric axis of the driving gear, will be effected whether the gears be at rest orin motion.
While I have illustrated and described herein a construction showing one embodiment of my invention, it is apparent thatthe details of construction may be modified without departing from the spirit of the in vention, and I do not wish to be limited in any ay thereby except as pointed out in the appended claims. I claim as my invention 2- 1. In an. explosive engine, in combination with a gear easing, a motor shaft mounted in said casing, a magneto, a driving gear actuated by the motor shaft, a driven gear having driving connection with the mag gear intermediate to, and,

and means for shifting said frame to move the central axis of said idle gear to one side or the other of said straight 11110.

In an explosive engine, in combination with a gear casing, a motor shaft mounted in said casing, a magneto and a magneto shaft, a driving gear aetuated'by the motor shaft, :1 gear on the magneto shaft, an idle gear intermediate to, and intermeshing With, said driving gear and said magneto gear, a sliding frame in which said idle gear is journalcd, said frame being mounted in said Casing and adapted for movement in a direction transverse to a straight line connecting the cent *al axes of said driving and magneto gears; a rock shaft journaled in said casing, a rock arm on said shaft, means connecting said rock arm with said sliding frame and means for actuating said rock shaft to shift said frame for moving the central axis of the idle gear to one side or the other of said line.

said driving gear and said magneto gear, a sliding framc'in which said idle gear is journaled, said sliding frame being mounted in said easing and adapted for movement in, a direction transverse to a straight line conneoting the central axes of said driving and driven gears, said frame being proxided with laterally extending lugs, a rock shaft journaled in said casing, a rock arm on said shaft adapted to engage said lugs, and
' means for actuating said rock shaft to shift said frame for moving the central axis of the idle gear to one side or the other of said straight line.
