To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL BENSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Menominee, in the county of Menominee and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Per-ambulators or Go-Carts, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates particularly to perambulators or go-carts which are adapted to be folded in compact form to enable them to be carried about conveniently, where necessary, as in traveling; and my primary object is to provide a structure of the character indicated of improved construction and operation.

It may be stated preliminarily that the invention involves a construction in which the handle is adapted to fold forwardly on the running-gear frame, in which operation the back will be automatically folded upon the seat, after which, in the final folding movement of the handle, a downward extension of the links which carry the front ends of the arms of the carriage, said extension being in the form of a U-shaped lever, operates to fold the wheels laterally inwardly in pairs beneath the running-gear frame,
and the wheel-supports being linked to the pivoted sides of the carriage-body, operate to fold said sides inwardly upon the now horizontal seat-back. The construction and arrangement are such that one pair of wheel supports is folded inwardly in advance of the other, and, correspondingly, one side of the carriage-body is folded inwardly in advance of the other. In the reverse operation, the pairs of wheels are unfolded, one slightly in advance of the other, and likewise the sides of the carriage-body are unfolded, one slightly in advance of the other, after which the seat-back is raised to the standing position. The U-shaped lever which constitutes a downward extension of the links mentioned serves, when the handle is in the standing position, to brace and lock the front wheel-forks, and a small pair of levers pivoted on the rear portion of the running-gear frame and connected by links to said extension, serve to lock and brace the brace-links which connect the rear portions of the folding sides of the carriagebody to the rear Wheel-forks, thereby firmly bracing the rear wheel-forks. The handle is secured and locked in the standing position by a pair of toggle-links which connect the lower portion of the handle with the rear portion of the running-gear frame, and a pair of toggle-links are employed to brace the sides of the carriage-body in front of the foot-support, said last-named togglelinks being operated by a U-shaped member which depends in front of the foot-support and in the rear of the front end, or front cross-member, of the running-gear frame.
In the preferred embodiment of the invent-ion, which is illustrated in the accompanying drawings,A represents a running-gear frame; B, 13, pairs of wheel-supports which are pivot-ally connected with the side members of the runningear frame; C, a handle pivotally connected at its lower end with the rear end of the running-gear frame and adapted to fold forwardly on the running-gear frame; D, a carriage-body, which is foldable; E, a pair of arms which are preferably connected at their rear ends directly to the side members, or arms, of the handle; F, a pair of links pivotally connected at their upper ends to the front ends of the arms E and pivotally connected with the intermediate portions of the side members of the running-gear frame and having extensions which project downwardly beneath the frame and are joined at their lower ends by a web, or cross-member, thus providing a U-shaped lever F which serves in the operation of folding and unfolding the wheel-supports; G, G, a pair of toggle-links connecting the handlebars with the side members of the runninggear frame; H, H, a pair of togglelinks connecting the front portions of the foldable sides of the carriage-body to a frame member H carried by the front member of the running-gear frame; H a device for operating the toggle-links H, H; and I, a foldable top, or canopy, supported on the arms E.
The running-gear frame may be of any suitable construction. As shown, it comprises side members 1; a front cross-member 2; and a cross-member 3 connecting the side members 1 a short distance in front of their rearends. The rear ends of the side members 1 are curved upwardly somewhat and joined to the forwardly curved lower ends of the handle-bars, by pivots 4. The side members 1 are equipped near their front ends with downwardly projecting brackets 5 with which are con nected, by pivots 6, the front wheel-forks, or wheel-supports, 7. Said side members 1 "are equipped a short distance in front of their rear ends with depending brackets S, witlrwhich are connected, by pivots 9, the
.rear wheel-forks, or wheel-supports, 10.
The front and rear "wheel-forks are connected in pairs at the sides of the vehicle by longitudinal members 11, the members 11 being connected with the wheel-forks near the spindles 12 thereof. The wheel-forks are equipped with inward projections 13 comprising bars bent edge-wise to form angular members, adapted to be connected with links joining the wheel-forks and brackets attached to the folding sides of the carriage-body in a manner to be presently described. The members 11 of the wheelsupports B, B are equipped with brackets 14which support rods 15 and 16 respectively, which extend substantially parallel with the members 11 and serve as cams adapted to coact with the U-shaped lever F. The rod, or cam-member, 15 of the wheelsupport B is carried at a greater distance from the member 11 than is the rod, or cam, 16 of the wheelsupport B, as will be understood from a comparison of Figs. 1, 2 and 5, the purpose being to cause the wheel-support B to be folded somewhat in advance of the wheel-support B. The member 11 of the wheel-support B is equipped with a cam 17 adapted to be engaged by the member F in the first portion of the forward movement of said member in the unfolding operation, so that the wheel-support B will be unfolded somewhat in advance of the wheel support B.
The handle C may be of any suitable construction. As shown, it comprises sidebars 18 and a cross-round 19.
The carriage-body comprises a seat 20 mounted on leaf-springs 21 which project inwardly from the side members 10f the running-gear frame, as shown in Fig. 7; a back 22 connected by pivots 23 with clips 24 carried by the rear portion of the seat, said clips projecting upwardly sufficient-ly to allow the back to foldforwardly upon the seat; a foot-support pouch 25 having its side flaps 26 connected at their upper edges with rods 27 which extend from brackets 28 carried by the front portion of the seat to the frame-supported member H the flexible bottom-piece 29 of the foot-support being connected at its rear edge portion with the front portion of the seat; and side pieces 30, each of which is equipped near its lower edge at its rear portion with a bracket-member 31 joined by a pivot 32 to a bracketmember 33 carried by the rear cross-member 3 of the running-gear frame, and each of which is equipped at its front end with a bracket-member 34 joined by a pivot 35 to a bracket-member 36 carried by the side memher 1 of the running-gear frame. The side ,members may be composed of light boards cut to any desired configuration, covered by artificial leather and equipped with metal binding, as illustrated. The front end portions of the sides 30 are connected by a flexible boot, or cover, 37, which houses the foot-support, being extended downwardly and attached to the front ends of the side members 30, as indicated at 38. Each of the togglelinks H, H, comprises an upper link 3%) and a lower link 40, said links being bound together by a pivot 41, as shown in Fig. 5. The upper end of the upper link is joined by a pivot 42 to a bracket-member 43 attached to the inner surface of the side 30. The lower end of the lower link 40 is connected by a pivot 44 to the frame-supported member H As shown, said member H comprises a U-shaped bar, the lower ends of whose downturned arms are connected by rivets 45 to the front frame-member 2-. The links 39 and 40 overlap at their meeting ends, and are equipped with stops 46 which allow the pivot points 41 to pass the line joining the pivots 42 and 44, as shown in Fig. 5. The toggles may be flexed upwardly by pushing up on the cross-member 47 of the U-shaped member H said U-shaped member having upwardly extending arms 48 whose upper ends are connected with the pivots 41. When the parts are in the position shown in Fig. 5, the side members 30 of the carriage-body are locked in the standing position.
The rear ends of the arms E are connected with the side-bars 18 of the handle by pivots 49, and the front ends of said arms E are connected with the upper ends of the links F by pivots 50. The links F are joined to the side members 1 of the runninggear frame by pivots 51. The extension F of the l. til
links F comprises the arms 52 and crossmembers 53 joining the lower ends of said arms 52. The arms 52 are joined to the cross-member 53 by braces 54 which may be integrally formed, as shown in Fig. 4. The front bracket-members let connected with the member 11 of the wheel-supports B, B have inwardly extending portions provided at their rear edges with locking-notches 55, as shown in Fig. 4, said locking-notches be ing adapted to receive the offset lower end portions 56' of the arms 52 of the U-shapcd lever F. Said arms 52 are equipped with brackets 57 with which are connected, by means of pivots 58, links 59 which extend rearwardly and are connected at their rear ends, by pivots 60, with the arms 61 of the U-shaped lever 62, said arms 61 being joined, by pivots 63, to the rear portions of the side members 1 of the running-gear frame.
; The U-shaped lever 62 has a cross-member,
or web, 64 which is equipped near its ends with upwardly extending studs 65 encircled by coil-springs 66 which yieldingly support a cross-rod 67 having eyes 68 adapted to rest upon said springs, being confined on the studs 65 by means of washers, or flanges, 69. The back 22 has pivotally connected with its lateral edges near the lower end thereof, as by means of pivots 70, the front ends of the forwardly turned arms 71 of the U shaped member 72. The arms 71 have their lower edges provided near the rear end there' of with slots, or notches, 73 adapted to engage the cross-member 67. Coil-springs 74, connecting the arms 71 with the cross-member 64, serve to maintain the U-shaped member 72 in engagement with the cross-member 67 under ordinary conditions. WVhen it is desired to allow the back 22 to assume a reclining position, the rear end of the member 72 may be swung upwardly to disengage the notches 73 from the cross-member 67, whereupon the back may be dropped to the reclining position, as shown in Fig. 9, the back, when in this position, resting upon the yieldingly supported cross-member 67.
Connected with the members 13 carried by the front wheel-forks 7, by means of pivots 75, are links 76 and 77, whose upper ends are joined, by pivots 78, to bracketmembers 79 secured to the foldable side members 30 of the carriage-body at the lower portions thereof, said brackets depending some distance below the pivots 35 and serving as levers. Connected with the correspending members 13 carried by the rear wheel-forks 10, by means of pivots 80, are links 81 and 82,whose upper ends arejoined, by pivots 83, to bracket-members, or arms, 84 which are secured to the side pieces 30 in the rear of the pivots 32, said bracketmembers 84 being below the lower edges of the side members and serving as levers. The links 81 and 82 have their upper ends projecting beyond the pivots 83 to afford extensions 85 which are provided at'their front edges with locking-notches 86 adapted to be engaged by the upper ends of locking-levers 87 which are connected at their intermediate portions, by pivots S8, with the side members 1 of the running-gear frame, and which are connected at their lower ends, by pivots 89, with the rear portions of the links 59. The links 81 and 82 comprise metal bars having their projecting end portions 85 twisted through an angle of 90 to afford forwardly presented edges in which are located the notches 86. WVhen the handle is in the standing position, the links 59 hold the lowerends of the looking-levers S7 in the forward position and the upper ends of said locking-levers in engagement with the locking-notches 86 of the links 81 and 82. \Vhen the handle is folded forwardly'with relation to the running-gear frame, the links 59 are thereby thrust rearwardly by the handle-actuated member F, thereby unlocking the brace- links 81 and 82.
Each of the toggle-link devices G, G, comprises a rear link 90 whose upper end is joined by a pivot 91 to the corresponding handle-bar, and a lower link 92, whose lower end is joined by a pivot 93 to the corresponding side member 1 of the running-gear frame. The meeting ends of the links 90 and 92 overlap and are joined by a pivot 9 1, the links being provided with shoulders adapted to limit their movement in the straightening operation, in a well under stood manner. As shown, the links are preferably curved, thereby contributing to the graceful appearance of the structure.
The side members 30 of the foldable carriage-body are recessed in front of the links F in the rear of the boot 37, as indicated at 95, thereby adding to the convenience of access and contributing to the graceful appearance of the carriage. As appears from Fig. 2, the actuating means H of the togglelinks which hold the boot 37 distended laterally and secure the side members 30 of the carriage-body in standing position, depends slightly in the rear of the front cross-member of the running-gear frame, the crossmember 4:7 being accessible beneath the cross-member 2.
The operation will be readily understood from the foregoing detailed description. Assuming the structure to be in the condition shown in Fig. 1, the carriage-top may be collapsed and swung rearwardly upon its mountings 96 which are carried by the arms E, so as to rest upon the arms. When it is desired to fold the carriage, this may be accomplished by flexing the handle-bracing toggle-levers G upwardly, and swinging the handle C forwardly, in which operation the arms E operate to turn the links F on the pivots 5], thereby withdrawing the memher F from looking engagement with the notches 55 at the front portions of the wheelsupports, that is, from the locking-notches carried by the front bracket-members 14. Motion is transmitted through the links 59 to the rear locking-levers 87, thereby swinging the upper ends of said levers 87 forwardly and releasing them from engagement with the locking-notches 86 of the rear bracelinks 81, 82. In this first operation of the forward movement of the handle, the links 59 also swing the U-shaped lever 62 about the pivots 68, thereby causing the member 7 2 which holds the seat-back in the standing position to swing the seat-back forwardly about the pivots 23 and fold it upon the seat. In the final portion of the folding movement of the handle, the U-shaped lever F engages the cam-rod 16 and a moment later the cam-rod 15, thereby swinging the pairs of wheels inwardly, one somewhat in advance of the other. As each wheel-fork swings inwardly, it operates the opposite side 30 of the carriage-body by reason of the brace-link connections joining the wheelsupport to the side piece, and, consequently, the side pieces 30 are folded inwardly, one somewhat in advance of the other. Previous to the beginning of the folding operation, the member H is struck upwardly, thereby flexing the toggle-links H upwardly and unlocking the side pieces 30. During the folding of the side pieces 30, the flexible boot-covering 37 folds as the side pieces turn inwardly to the horizontal position.
In the reverse operation, the handle is swung to the standing position, and in the first operation of the consequent movement of the member F, the wheel-supports are swung outwardly, one somewhat in advance of the other, owing to the employment of the cam 17, and in this movement the side pieces 30 are swung to the standing position. In the final operation of the unfolding movement of the handle, the seat-back is swung to the standing position, the U- shaped lever F is forced between the wheelsupports near the front wheel-forks and caused to engage the locking-notches 55, and the links 59 move the locking-levers 87 into engagement with the locking-notches 86 of the rear brace- links 81 and 82. After the unfolding operation, the toggles G are moved to lock the handle and the toggles H are moved to lock the side pieces 30. When desired, the U-shaped back-support ing member, or U-shaped link, 72 may be released from engagement with the spring supported cross-member 67, and the back may be dropped to the reclining position shown in Fig. 9, in which position the back will be yieldingly supported by the member 67 which rests upon the springs 66.
It is noteworthy that the pairs of bracelinks 76, 77 and 81, 82 extend on an incline I from the vicinity of the side members of the running-gear frame to the lower ends of the wheel-forks, and, further, that the rear brace- links 81 and 82 are securely locked at their upper ends by the locking-levers 87. Moreover, the U-shaped lever F is firmly wedged between the front portions of the wheel-supports when the structure is in the open condition. It will be understood, therefore, that the wheel-supports are braced laterally in a most effective manner, so that there is slight danger of racking the wheelsupports or the brackets which attach them to the running-gear frame.
The foregoing detailed description has been given for cl-earness of understanding only, and no undue limitation is to be understood therefrom, but the appended claims are to be construed as broadly as permissible in view of the prior art.
\Vhat I regard as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a folding structure of the character set forth, the combination of a running-gear frame, a forwardly foldable handle, wheel-- supports adapted to fold beneath said frame, side-members adapted to fold transversely above said frame, links connecting each pair of wheelsupports with the opposite sidemember, and handle-actuated means serving to fold said wheel-supports and said sidemembers.
2. In a structure of the character set forth, the combination of a running-gear frame, a forwardly foldable handle, wheel-' supports adapted to fold beneath said frame, side-members adapted to fold transversely above said frame, inclined bracelinks connecting said wheel-supports and said side-members, and handle-actuated means serving to fold said wheel-supports and said side-members.
3. In a structure of the character set forth, the combination of a running-gear frame, a forwardly foldable handle, wheelsupports adapted to fold beneath said frame, side-members adapted to fold transversely above said frame, inclined bracelinks connecting said wheel-supports and said side -members, handleactuated means serving to fold said wheel-supports and said side-members, and means for locking the structure in the open condition.
4-. In a structure of the character set forth, the combination of a running-gear frame, a handle adapted to fold forwardly thereon, pairs of wheel-supports pivotally united to the sides of said frame, a body comprising a seat, folding back and folding side-pieces, links joining said side-pieces, each to the opposite pair of wheel-supports, and handle-actuated wheel-support actuating means.
5. In a structure of the character set. forth, the combination of a running-gear frame, a handle adapted to fold forwardly thereon, pairs of wheel-supports pivotally united to the sides of said frame, a body comprising a seat, folding back and folding side-pieces, links joining said side-pieces, each to the opposite pair of wheel-supports, handle actuated wheel supports actuating means, and means for locking the structure in the open position.
6. In a structure of the character set forth, the combinationof a running-gear frame, a handle adapted to fold forwardly thereon, arms adapted to be actuated by said handle, links connected with the front portions of said arms and pivotally joined to the running-gear frame, a wheel-support actuating member connected with said links, a link connected with said member, a locking-device actuated by said last-named link, wheel-supports pivotally connected with the runninggear frame, brace links connected with said wheel-supports and having engagement with said locking-device, and a carriage-body having folding side-pieces connected with said brace-links.
7 In a structure of the character set forth, the combination of a running-gear frame, a handle adapted to fold forwardly thereon, pairs of wheel-supports pivotally united to the sides of said frame, a body comprising a seat, a back adapted to fold forwardly thereon, and folding side-pieces, a wheel-support folding device linked to said handle, and link-and-lever connections between said last-named device, the rear portion of said running-gear frame and said back.
8. In a structure of the character set forth, the combination of a running-gear frame, a handle adapted to fold forwardly thereon, pairs of wheel-supports pivotally united to the sides of said frame, a body comprising a seat, a back adapted to fold forwardly thereon, and folding side-pieces, a wheel-support folding-lever pivoted on the intermediate portion of the runninggear frame and linked to said handle, a lever pivoted on the rear portion of the running-gear frame and linked to said lastnamed device, and a link connecting said last-named lever to said back.
9. In a structure of the character set forth, the combination of a running-gear frame, a handle adapted to fold forwardly thereon, pairs of wheel-supports pivotally united to the sides of said frame, a body comprising a seat, a back adapted to fold forwardly thereon, and folding side-pieces, a wheel-support folding-lever pivoted on the intermediate portion of the runninggear frame and linked to said handle, a lever pivoted on the rear portion of the running-gear frame and linked to said lastnamed device, a cross-member yieldingly supported on said last-named lever, and a U-shaped member having forwardly-extending arms pivotally connected with said back and having locking-notches adapted to engage said cross-member.
10. In a structure of the character set forth, a seat-back adapted to fold forwardly upon the seat, a handle adapted to fold forwardly upon the running-gear frame, a wheel-support folding-lever pivoted on the intermediate portion of the running-gear frame, links connecting said lever to said handle, a U-shaped lever having downwardly-extending arms, said arms pivoted on the rear portions of the side members of the running-gear frame, links connecting said arms with the wheel-support foldinglevcr, and connections between said U- shaped lever and said back, whereby the back will be folded in the operation of folding the handle.
11. In a structure of the character set forth, a seat-back adapted to fold forwardly upon the seat, a handle adapted to fold forwardly upon the running-gear frame, a wheel-support folding-lever pivoted on the intermediate portion of the running-gear frame, links connecting said lever to said handle, a U-shaped lever having downwardly-extending arms, said arms pivoted on the rear portions of the side-members of the running-gear frame, links'connecting said arms with the wheel-support foldinglever, a cross-member yieldingly supported on said U-shaped lever, and links connecting said cross-member to said back, said links having releasable engagement with said cross-member, whereby the back may be dropped to the reclining position to rest upon said yieldingly-supported crossmember.
12. In a structure of the character set forth, the combination of a running-gear frame, a forwardly folding handle, wheelsupports pivotally connected with the running-gear frame, brace-links pivotally connected with said wheel-supports at the rear wheels, a body having side-pieces pivotally mounted on the running-gear frame, connections between said brace-links and the rear portions of said side-members, and handle-actuated locking-devices for said brace-links.
13. In a structure of the character set forth, the combination with a non-collapsible running-gear frame having suitably spaced side-members and a rigid crossmember connecting them, of a body having inwardly folding side-pieces and a flexible boot connected with the front ends thereof, and toggle-link devices connecting said sidepieces with said cross-member and serving to lock said side-pieces in the standing position.
14. In a structure of the character set forth, the combination with a running-gear frame, of a body having inwardly-folding side-pieces and a flexible boot at the front end thereof, a pair of toggle-levers connected with each of said side-pieces and with. the front portion of the running-gear frame, and a device for flexing said toggle-levers depending adjacent the front member of the running-gear frame.
15. In a structure of the character set forth, the combination of a running-gear frame, pairs of wheel-supports pir'otally connected with the opposite sides of the running-gear frame, a forwardly-foldable handle, arms connected with said handle, links connected with the front ends of'said arms and pivoted on the intermediate portions of the side-members of the runninggear frame, said links having downward extensions joined by a cross-member, said downward extensions engaging said wheelsupports near the front wheels, a body having folding side-pieces, brace-links connecting said side-pieces, each to the opposite pair of wheel-supports, and handle-actuated locking devices for the rear brace-links.
16. In a structure of the character set forth, the combination of a running-gear frame, a forwardly-foldable handle, wheelsupports adapted to fold inwardly and upwardly beneath the running-gear frame, a body having folding side-pieces, and bracelinks connecting said side-pieces, each with the opposite wheel-support.
17. In a structure of the character set forth, the combination of a running gear frame, a forwardly-foldable handle, inwardly-foldable wheel-supports, arms pivotally'connected with said handle, a wheelsupport actuating-lever pivoted on the running-gear frame and connected with saidarms, a body having folding sidepieces, and links connecting said side-pieces, each to the opposite wheel-support.
18. In a structure of the character set forth, the combination of a running-gear frame, a forwardly-foldable handle, inwardly-foldable wheel-supports, arms pivotally connected with said handle, a wheelsupport actuating-lever pivoted on the running-gear frame and connected with said arms, a body having folding side-pieces, links connecting said side-pieces, each to the opposite wheel-support, means for looking said side-pieces in the standing position and means for locking said handle in the standing position.
19. In a structure of the character set forth, the combination of a running-gear frame and wheel supports adaptedto fold inwardly and upwardly beneath said frame, a forwardly-foldable handle, a wheel-support actuating-lever pivoted on the intermediate portion. of the running-gear frame and extending between said wheel-supports, means connecting said lever' with the handle, a body having inwardly-folding sidepieces, inclined brace-links connecting the rear portions of said side-pieces, each with the wheel-support at the opposite side of the structure, and handle-actuated lockingdevices for said brace-links.-
20. In a structure of the character set forth, the combination of a running-gear frame equipped with upwardly-extending bracket-members, a body having folding side-pieces pivoted on said bracket-members, wheel-supports pivotally connected, with said running-gear frame and adapted to fold laterally inwardly beneath the same, handleactuated wheel-support actuating means, and brace-links connecting said wheelsupports to said side-pieces, said brace-links serving to actuate said sidepieces.
