IDENTIFICATION-SIGN. r
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Ma 21, 1912.
Application filed November 4, 1910. Serial No. 590,712.
To all whom it may concernf Be it known that I, HENRY SJOVIK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Great Falls, in the county of Cascade, State of Montana, have invented certain new and useful I Improvements in Identification-Signs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertainsto make and use the same.
This invention relates to identification signs for street corners, houses, vehicles.
The object of the invention is to provide a sign having removable designation characters which may be changed from time to time as necessary, and further having these designation characters spaced from the support to which the sign may be attached so that rainwater and the like will not gain access to the characters.
With the above object in view the invention consists of the novel details of construction and combination of parts hereinhas after fully described and claimed, it being understood that various modifications may be made in the minor details of construction within the scope of' the appended claim.
"In the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification,Figure 1 is a front elevation of a sign constructed in accordance with my invention. Flg. 2 1s a cross sectional view taken on the line. 2-2 Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on the line 33 Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a-plan view of the blank from which the sign supporting frame is formed.
Referring now to the drawing in which like characters of reference designate similar parts, the sign is seento comprise a supporting frame 10 formed from a single plate of pliable material. The plate is Provided centrally with a longitudinal orifice 11, and is provided in its edges adjacent to the ends of this orifice with spaced notches 12, the
material between these notches being curved backwardly and then inwardly to form mirror receivmg grooves 13, and the material intermediate these notches and ends of the plate forming tabs which are bent so as to close the ends of the grooves as shown at 13, thence being extended in the planes of the closed ends a distance approximately equal to the shortest diameter of the closed ends, thence being bent abruptly at right angles upon themselves and forming supporting lugs 14, the free legs of these lu s being argeinged in a plane arallel to the plane of e the ldentification plate in said grooves will be spaced from the support to which the device is attached so that rainwater and the like will not gain access to,the identifica: tion plate.
Arran ed in the grooves of the frame are a plurality of juxtapositioned' mirrors 15, these mirrors by virtue of the tabs or supporting lugs of the'frame being pliable, being bodily removable from the frame at any time as may be necessary. Each mirror is provided with an identification character, and in order that the identification character may be more readily visible at night than ordinary signs said character is formed by scraping a corresponding portion of the .light reflecting element from the mirror and this scraped portion covered with an opaque element 17 such as black paint or the like. The identification character thus formed is disposed in the reflectin field which will cause the character to stan sign is viewed from a certain angle, and it is clear that a pedestrian may by shiftin its position at night readily view the sign rom such an angle as to make all the characters stand out in relief. For retaining the characters against displacement from the frame should they be broken, a metal back piece- 18 is secured in the mirror receiving grooves of the frame, and forms an abutment against which the mirrors rest.
What is claimed is a A sign including a one iece frame formed from a single blank of pliable material hav' ing a longitudinal openin the. longitudinal portions of said blank eing. bent backwardly and then inwardly to form si ,receiving grooves, the end portions 0 said blank being bent to form straight legs which close the ends of said grooves and extend in out in relief when the the planes of said closed ends for a distance In testimony whereof, I afiix my signeefi'ual to approximately the shortest diameter ture,.in presence of witnesses.
e the. closed ends whereby to; space the frame from the supportto which it may be v applied, said legs being terminall bent out- Witnesses; v wardly to form securing lugs, an an identi- GHAs..Ai-mERso1-r, fieation element secured in-said grooves. and L,M.'MCDOWELL,' exposed through said longitudinal opening. Gus. SJ'OVIK.
