PAUL SCHMIDT, 0F HANOVER, GERMANY.
GAS-FURNACE FOR HEATING, SCALING, AND HARDENING PURPOSES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 21, 1912.
Application filed July 18, 1910. Serial No. 572,655.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, PAUL SCHMIDT, of 1 Prinzenstrasse, Hanover, in the German Empire, engineer, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gas-Furnaces for Heating, Scaling, and Hardening Purposes.
This invention relates to gas furnaces for heating, scaling and hardening purposes, for example for heating blocks and iron plates, for sealing cables (wires) and chains, and in which the heating gas currents are adapted to be conducted to suit the required purposes and for utilizing the heat thereof as much as possible to rapidly and thoroughly heat the material to be treated. For this purpose the gases of combustion from the combustion chamber are so conducted that they pass either above or below or in regulatable quantities above and below the partition, and besides the heating space or heating passages above the partition, passages are also provided below the partition which are in communication with the combustion chamber above the partition, and which, similarly to the exhaust passages of the upper heating chamber, are connected to an up-take and provided with dampers by means of which the passage and quantity of the heating gases, adapted to pass above or below the partition, can be regulated.
A furnace provided according to this invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing.
Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section and Fig. 2 is a cross sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a cross sectional View taken on the line 33 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a similar view taken 011 the line H of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a similar View taken on line 5-5 of Fig. 1.
Above one end of the partition a is the combustion chamber 6 for the gas air mixture. The heating gases pass from here through the upper chamber 0 to the uptake 11.. The necessary air for combustion enters through the pipe f into a chamber (Z provided above the chamber 0 and in front of the nozzle 2' it is mixed with the gas which enters through the passage 9 and the nozzle 72,. Below the nozzle 2' there are provided in the partition a apertures 70 which lead into chambers we provided below the partition a, so that the latter can be heated on both sides. The gases coming from the upper chamber 0 are conducted by the uptake n controlled by a damper r to the flue, while those from the chambers m are conducted to the flue by the up-take 0 provided with a damper s. It is therefnre possible by the adjustment of the dampers 1' and s to conduct the heating gases generated in the heating chamber 6 either only through the upper chamber a or through the lower chambers m, according to requirements or according to the manner in which the material is to be treated, so that the material is under heated, or the gas current can be divided, so that it passes simultaneously through the upper and lower chambers. The quantity of gas passing through these chambers c and m can be regulated by the corresponding adjustment of the dampers r and 8.
According to Figs. 2 and 3 the partition is constructed of perforated stones in such manner that series of holes are formed through which the cable (wires), chains or the like to be scaled are passed.
If the above furnace is to be employed as a furnace for blocks and iron plates then on the partition (1 there are provided for this purpose forged iron conducting tubes, not sh own in the drawing, which are cooled in the known manner by water.
I claim:
1. A furnace of the character described comprising in combination, means forming an elongated inclosure extending in substantially a horizontal plane, means for dividing said inclosure into upper and lower chambers having a communication between the said chambers adjacent one end of the inclosure, means for introducing hot gases into said inclosure adjacent the end thereof having the said communication between the upper and lower chambers thereof, separate egress means for gases, for said upper and lower chambers and disposed adjacent the end of the inclosurc remote from the said communication between the said chambers thereof, and means for independently controlling said egress means, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A furnace of the character described comprising in combination, means forming a first or lower elongated chamber, a second or upper elongated chamber, and a third elongated chamber disposed in superposed relation to each other, means for admitting air into the third chamber adjacent one end thereof, means for admitting gas into said third chamber adjacent the end "opposite the said air admission means, nozzles for mixing the said air and gases and conveying the mixture into said second chamber, the
first and second chambers having a com 'munication therebetween ad acent the m1xture inlet of the second chamber, egress means for said first chamber ad acent an end opposite from said communication between the first and second chambers, means for controlling said egress means, second egress means for said second chamber adjacent an end thereof opposite said communication between the first and second chambers, and means for controlling said second egress means, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. A furnace of the character described comprising in combination, means forming a first or lower elongated chamber, a second or upper elongated chamber, and a third elongated chamber disposed in superposed relation to each other, means for admitting air into the third chamber adjacent one end thereof, means for admitting gases into said third chamber adjacent the end opposite the chamber adjacent the end thereof opposite said communication between the first and second chamber, and means for controlling said second egress means, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set it my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
