UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BENJAMIN F. HOWARD, OF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR 0F ONE-HALF TO JOHN W. STAUB, OF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA.
LUBRICATOR.
` ARD, a citizen of the United States, residing 'at Indianapolis, in thecounty of` Marion and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lubricators, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to thoroughly nebulizellubricatin oil and deliver it in that condition mixe with steam directly to the pipe which supplies steam to the cylinder of the engine.
I accomplish the object of the invention by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawing which is an elevation and partial vertical section of a lubricator embodying my improvements.
Referring to the drawing, 1 is a main pipe through which steam for drivingr an engine is supplied to the steam chest in the usual manner (not shown).
2 is a branch pipe extending laterally from the main pipe 1. It discharges into a vertical pipe 8, preferably of less diameter, and the pipe 3 discharges into a conduit 4, extensions from which discharge into pipe 1 at a point nearer to the engine than that at which pipe 2 leaves it. As the return opening to pipe 1 is unich smaller in area than the discharge into pipe 2, a pressure circuit is established by which properly nebulized lubricants added to the steam passingv through said branch pipes will be 4injected into the head of steam in pipe 1 charge of the oil from the tank is regulated.v
As oil is forced from reservoir 5 by combined steam pressure and hydrostatic head produced by condensation forces the oil from the reservoir 5 through pipe l2, water is admitted through a pipe l() to take its place. A condenser ll is located above the reservoir 5 and pipe l() takes from the lower end of the condenser and discharges near the Specification of Letters Patent.

bottom of the reservoir. A pipe 12 conneots the condenser with steam pipe 2 and steam coming through pipe 12 iscooled and condensed to water in .said condenser ready for use as needed in the reservoii A pipe 13 much smaller in cross-sectional area than pipes 3 and 4, takes steam from near the junction of the last two pipes and extending thence upwardly discharges it against the outer walls of the nipple 8, thereby heating theoil and blowing` the drops of oil off of the end of the nipple and down into the surrounding tubel as they form. Steam pressure through pipe 13 also prevents the formation of a vacuum in tube 15 or an aecumulation of oil or water in said tube or the occurrence of back pressure, any one of which might interfere with the operation of the device. Water of condensation .forming in pipe 13" is returned by gravity through said pipe t-o the conduit 4 thereby preventing the gage glass 15 from becoming water-logged so as to interfere with the oil discharge through it. The oil is fed positively from reservoir 5 by the pressure of steam reaching it through pipe 12. The tube 15 will preferably be of glass through which the formation of drops may be Seen and which will enable the lsupply to be regulated intelligently by a suitable opening or closing of the needle valve. Discharge from tube 15 is through channel 1G into conduit 4. The channel 16 curves from tube 15 downwardly and toward pipe 1 to cause the mixed oil and steam to be carried without obstruction by the steam flow in conduit 4. It will also be noted that the entrance to pipe 13 is in an' upward curve which facilitates the supply of steam to said pipe.
Located in the conduit 4 is a` nozzle 19 through which the oil, mixed with steam, is driven by the steam pressure through pipes 2, 3, and 4 and is therebyY thoroughly nebnlized. tween the nozzle 19 and main pipe 1 and a globe valve 21 regulates the steam flow from pipe 2. The reservoir 5 is provided with glass tube 24 to show the height-of water and oil in the reservoir and at the bottom of the tube is a cock 25 by opening which the tank may be drained of the accumulated water before refilling with oil.
'Ihe operation of my improved lubricator has been explained as its construction A gate valve 20y is located bewas described so that its operation will be Having thus fully described my invention', what Iclaim as new and Wish to secure by Letters Patent, is*
l. The combination Withamain steam cone ducting pipe, of a branch pipe therefrom,
an oil reservoir having a discharge nozzle, a condenser connected With the branch pipe and discharging Water of condensation into the oil reservoir to .force the oil out, means connected with said branch pipe for supplying steam against said oil discharge nozzle and for returning Water of condensation to said branch pipe, means for nebulizing the oil and, steam and means for discharging the product into. said main pipe.
2. The combination with a main steam conducting pipe, of a branch pipe there'- from, which discharges through a reduced diameter -into said main pipe at a point nearer the engine, an oil reservoir above .said pipe discharge, a steam condenser,
means for supplying steam to the condenser,
lmeans for connecting the condenser With the oil reservoir, a discharge from the reservoir terminating Ain a nipple, a needle valve seated in said nipple, means for discharging the oil issuing from the nipple into said branch pipe, a steam conduit taking i from the branch pipe below the nipple and discharging against the outer Wall of the nipple, a nozzle in the branch pipe between its discharge end and said nipple, and means to supply steam under pressure for forcing said oil product through the nozzle into said main pipe.
valve seated in said nipple, means 'for dis-l` charging the oilissuing from the nipple int? said branch pipe, Va steam conduit takin from the branch pipe considerably below the nipple and discharging against the' outer Wall ci the nipple, a nozzle in the branch pipe between the nipple and the main pipe,
.and a steam pipe from said branch pipe between the nipple. and branch pipe inlet to supply steam pressure for :forcing the oil product from the nipple through the nozzle.
4L. The combination with .a main steam conducting pipe, or a branch pipe therefrom discharging into said main pipe at a point nearer the engine, an' oil reservoir above said discharge of the branch pipe, a steam supply pipe thereto, a discharge pipe therefrom to the branch pipe, a nipple in said last pipe, a nozzle in the branch pipe between its discharge into the main pipe and the discharge of the reservoir pipe into it, and a pipe taking steam beiow the oil reservoii` from the branch pipev and discharg ing into the 'upper end of said reservoirg 75 discharge pipe against the nipple In Witness whereof, Si, have hereunto set my hand and seal at indianapolis, indiana,
