. To all when; it may concern:
Be it known that we, ARTHUR LAMARRE and Lumen FIALA, citizens of the United States, residing at Fall River, in of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Washing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
1 Our invention relates to improvements in Washing machmes and it has for Its object the construction of a device of this character which while simple in construction will efficiently perform the Work for which it is designed. a
A further object of our invention is the productionof a washing machine in which the cleansing of clothes can be accomplished with the minimum expenditure of labor and time required in its operation.
' To these ends our invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts fully illustrated in the accom anying drawings and described in the fol owing specification. p
In the drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of our improved machine; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section taken on line w, w of Fig. 3; Fig. 3'is a vertical sectional view, and Fig. 4 a perspective view of the clothes pounder.
1 designates the tub, preferably ofvrectan'gular shape and-su ported on suitable legs or standards 2. .At its top the tub is provided with a cover 3 formed of two leaves hinged at their edges to the sides of the tub. One of said leaves is provided with a handle 4: whereby the same may be raised. The bottom and sides of the tub 1 are provided With-ribs 5, smooth risers 6 being placed at the sides of the tub fora purpose to be presentl set forth.
h bunted at the upper edge at one side of the tub is a bracket 7 in which is journa-led ashaft 8 having a forwardly extending tubular portion 9 adapted to receive the end of an operating lever 10 provided with an "enlargement or handle 11 at its outer or free end, the said lever 10 extending over the to of the tub, with its handle portion 11 Jexten ing beyond the same. Secured to the lever 10 at a point central thereof is a bracket Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed October 18, 1911.
the county Patented May 21, 1912. Serial No. 655,314.
12'to which is pivoted the end 13 of a stem 14., the base of which is secured to a pyramidal-shaped pounder 15. The two-part hlngecover 3 is provided with 15, through which the stem 14- carrying the pounder 15 is adapted to reciprocate. The pounder 15 is formed with a concaved under surface, and a series of rectangular ribs 16 between which are provided perforations 17. The pounder 15 is of such sizeias to cause its edges to extend over the smooth risers (3, thereby to prevent the edges of the pounder from becoming caught between the ribs. At one side and near the bottom of thetub we provide a draw-off faucet 18.
The clothes to be laundried, together with the hot water and soap having been placed in the tub pounder" reciprocated by means of the handle 11 thereof, thereby inducing a pressure of air and water by means of its hollow construction and the apertures therethrough, whereby the clot-hes are kept in constant motion and are rubbed against the vertical surfaces of the tub and brought in contact with the ribs 5. The apertures through the sides of the pounder also cause a rapid mixture of the soap and water and, while lessening the pressure, increase the motion of the wate about the clothes being washed.
We have found that but little exertion is required to manipulate the pounder and to effectually cleanse the clothes being washed, and very short time.
Having thus described our invention what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
In a washing machine, the combination of a receptacle having an opening in the top and provided on its inner walls witha plural ity of horizontal ribs, vertical smooth cleats extending across the horizontal ribs, said cleats being disposed in spaced relaan openingthe cover 3 is. then closed and thetion on each wall of the receptacle, :1 pounder 1 located in the receptacle, said pounder being of less width than the interior width of the receptacle to provide lateral play for said pounder, a stem extending from the pounder, a handle pivoted to one side of the top the receptacle and having a depending arm which operates in the opening in the top In testimony whereof we afiix our signaof the receptacle, and a pivotal connection tures in presence of two witnesses. between the stem and the depending arm, ,ARTHUR LAMARRE. whereby when the handle is vertically rel LUDGER FIALA. ciprocated, the pounder will be free to be Witnesses:
oscillated by contact with the clothes and PAUL V. CHARLAND, will ride on the smooth surfaces of the cleats. VINCENT MARCHILDON.
