Be it known that I, CAROLINE R. FRAN'rz, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wilmington, county of Newcastle, State of Delaware, have invented fcertain new and useful Improvements in Methods of Attaching IVall-Paper, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to securing in place on a wall, ceiling or other surface, wallpaper which has a water-proofed backing.
My invention was designed primarily for use in connection with comparatively stiff paper having an enameled face and a waterproofed back, such as disclosed in my Patent No. 935,903, granted October 9, 1909, but it is, of course, not limited to that use.
The novel features of the invention will be apparent from the following description taken in connection with the drawings.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional view of a portion of a wall having wallpaper secured thereto in accordance with my method; Fig. 2 is a View of the back p0rtion of a piece of wall-paper, of the construction shown in my prior patent, and Fig. 3 is a face viewI showing the enameled surface of the wall-paper.
In Fig. 1 of the drawings, 1 represents a portion of a wall or other surface, 2 represents the wall-paper, and 3 represents the mineral cement used by me in securing the wall-paper in place. y
In carrying out my invention, I make use of a wall-paper which has a water-proofed backing and it will, of course, be understood that the paper may be rendered waterproof by painting, varnishing, or soaking in oil. The cement which I use, I term mineral cement and I may make it as described in my prior patent, of a composition of spirit or water-proof varnish and mineral matter in finely powdered condition, such as lime, gypsum or like material the mineral matter being used in such proportion to the varnish as to secure an opaque coating. This cement is to be mixed in such a way as to be thick, containing very little moisture. It is to he applied either to the water-proofed backing of the paper, to the surface of the wall to which the paper is secured, or to both, and while it is in a plastic condition, the wall-paper is pressed uniformly in place on the surface. In this process the paper itself is not soaked or moistened, as has been done in the process heretofore in use in applying Wall-paper. The ordinary process of applying Wallpaper involves moistening the paper and the use of a aste or cement which is in a very Wet condition, the moisture contained in the paste subsequently evaporating through the pores of the paper. In my process the mineral cement contains very little moisture and that moisture cannot penetrate the paper or escape through it since the backing of the paper is waterproofed.
As above indicated, I prefer to use, in carrying out my process, a paper such as described in my Patent No. 935,903,4in which a coating of fine mineral matter is applied to the water-proofed backing so as to form a rou h surface in the shape of ridges, 4:, as in icated in Fig. 2. This mineral matter on the back of the paper is hardened or dried and then the paper is used in connection with the layer of mineral cement, 3, in lastic condition to secure it on the wall. find that the roughened surface of mineral matter on the back of the paper assists materially in holding it in place, while the plastic cement is settmg or hardening, but I also find that this is not necessary in order to produce good results.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. The method of securing in place wallpaper having a water-proofed backing consisting in placing a coating or layer of mineral cement mixed with only sufficient water to make it plastic between said backing and the surface to which it is to be secured and pressing said paper uniformly in place, while said cement is in plastic condition.
2. The method of securing in place on a surface, wall-paper in a dry condition, which consists in providing said paper with a water-proofed backing, placing a layer of mineral cement mixed with only sufficient miXed with only suiiicient water to make it plastic between the back of said paper yand the surface to which it is to be secured and pressing said paper uniformly in place.
