TWISTING DEVICE FOR MAKING ROPE.
Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed February 24, 1911. Serial No. 610,516.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, O'r'ro C. H. JnsoHKn, a citizen of the'United States, residing at Maywood, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Twisting Devices for Making Rope, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in twisting devices especially adapted for employment in making rope.
The object of my invention is the production of a device of the character mentioned which will be of improved and economicalconstruction and efficient in operation.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
With these objects in view my invention consists in a twisting device characterized as above mentioned and in certain details of construction and arrangement of parts all as will be hereinafter fully described and more particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
My invent-ion will be more readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which,
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a twisting device embodying my invention, Fig. 2 is a section taken on substantially line m-00 of Fig. 1, Fig. 3 is a detail side elevation of a crank member included in the construction, Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the device, and Fig. 5 is a similar side elevation of a slightly modified form of the device.
The preferred form of my construction as illustrated in the drawings comprises abody or frame which consists of an upper bearing-forming part 1 and a lower supporting or clamping part 2. The part 1 is provided at its lower edge with a flanged base through which extend screw bolts 3 which serve to rigidly secure the part 1 upon the upper edge of the part 2. The part 2 is bifurcated, as will be observed, for engagement over the upper edge of a fence or other suitable support upon which the device may be mounted, a set-screw 5 threaded in one side of the member 2 serving as a means of rigidly securing the latter to the supporting structure 4.
Member 1 is provided with three bearing hubs extending well out from the face thereof and stub shafts 7 are rotatably mounted in said hubs. Corresponding extremities of the shafts 7 are formed with engaging hooks 8 over which strands may be hooked in the formation of a rope therefrom. The bearing hubs projecting well out from the face of member 1, permit the ends of hooks 8 to be extended inwardly well beyond the outer face of said hubs, thus insuring the holding of the strands. Fixed to the opposite extremities of the shafts 7 are pinions 9, the construction being such that said pinions are coplanar.
Mounted medially in the member 1 is a transversely extending shaft 10 upon which is fixed a gear 11 which meshes with all of the pinions 9, as clearly shown in Fig. 1, so that upon rotation of said gear said pinions and hence the shafts 7 will be synchronously rotated. The shaft 10 is held against longitudinal movement in the bearing member 1 in one direction by the gear 11, movement in the opposite direction being prevented by a nut 10 which is threaded upon one extremity of said shaft.
Splined to the opposite extremity of the shaft 10 is a crank- 12 preferably of the circular type as shown, said crank being det-achably secured in position upon the shaft 10 by means of a nut 13 which is threaded upon said extremity of said shaft outward of said crank, a washer 14 being preferably interposed between said nut and said crank. With this arrangement, it will be observed, that detachment of the crank 12 may be readily and easily effected my simply unscrewing and removing the nut 13 and the washer 1 1.
Arranged upon the ground or floor directly below the crank 12 is an oscillatory foot-operable pedal 15, the outer extremity of said pedal being pivotally secured to a bearing member 16 which is rigidly fixed to the ground or floor. The opposite extremity of said pedal is operatively connected through the medium of a pitman 17 with the recess 18 of the crank 12; the arrangement being such that upon oscillatory operation of the lever 15 such as may be effected by the foot, said crank and hence the shafts 7 will be rotated. With this arrangement then a construction is provided for readily and easily rotating the hooks 8 to which the ends of the rope strands are secured, the operator of the pedal being at liberty to at all times inspect the mechanism and the twisting operation of the rope strands to see that the work is properly done. The party holding the strands manipulates his slotted handle in the manner which is well known, explanation and further description of the course of operation in forming the rope beyond the twisting device being here unnecessary, since this operation does not form a part of this invention.
In Fig. 5 I have shown the crank member 12 removable and a channel pulley 19 arranged in its place, said channel pulley be-' ing secured in position in' the same mannor as said crank. Vith this substitution, provision is made whereby the device may be connected with any suitable source of driving power which may be transmitted through a belt. This form of driving of the shaft 10 may be employed if desired, the form first described being, however, preferred.
A twisting-device of the construction as set forth is durable and economical, the same may be readily operated and it is not susceptible to readily becoming inoperative. Also, the device is of great eflicie'ncy in operation.
lVhile I' have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for car rying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention.
claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A twisting device comprising member 1 having a plurality of bearing hubs 6 extending well out from the face thereof; stub shafts 7 mounted in said bearing hubs and provided with inwardly turned hooks 8, the inner ends of said hooks 8 terminating well within the plane of the outer ends of bearing hubs 6; and means for rotating shafts 7, substantially as described.
