CASEMENT-WINDOW.

To all whom z't may concern Be it known that I, BERNARD I-IAUsMANN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of San Francisco, California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Casenient-lfVindows, of which the following is a specification, accompanied by drawings.
This invention relates to Casement windows having vertically movable and swinging sashes, and the objects of the invention are primarily to enable the sashes to be easily raised above the stool and swung inwardly or lowered again with the least amount of effort practically possible.
Another importantobject is to provide means of weather protection effected by the construction and manner of afliXing the window appliances to the window which permits the inclosing of the sash by inside stops.
Further objects of the invention are to obviate the necessity of applying the usual lifting levers for raising and lowering the sashes, and the attendant disadvantages of levers, which are apt to break and get out of order, due partly to the fact that the entire weight of the sashes, which frequently are heavy, is thrown upon the levers in raising and lowering the sashes. Considerable muscular effort is also required to raise a heavy sash by means of a short lever, so that such constructions are often impracticable for ordinary household use, since the levers can only be manipulated by those having sufficient strength. Even under such conditions lever operating devices have their limits in the instance of excessively large and heavy sashes glazed with heaviest glass.
My improvement consists in window appliances adapted to be applied to the sashes of the ordinary easement window, requiring some changes in its construction, and designed to coperate with counter-balance devices preferably in the form of balance weights, connected by sash cords or chains over the usual pulleys at the top of the sash guide-ways, with my improved window appliances.
Various devices have heretofore been devised and patented by myself and others for enabling the sashes of double-hung windows as distinguished from a easement window to be not only raised and lowered, but swung inwardly for cleaning and other purposes. In a double-hung window the upper and lower sashes are movable through- Specification of Letters Patent.

out the height of the window frame, each in its own sash groove, and in those instances in which the sashes are hinged at one side, guides have been provided for the hinges extending throughout the height of the window frame. Examples of the constructions I refer to are shown in my Patents Nos. 666,053 and 899,731. Other constructions are shown in the Daly and Leake Patents Nos. 806,241 and 862,451.
My window appliances are adapted to be combined with the window and comprise separate and independent upper and lower hinge guides which are secured in vertical alinement outside of the sash groove and upon the face of the jamb adjacent to the inside edge of the groove, and each fastening is provided with retaining members. These hinge guides are short, since provision is only necessary for a short travel of a sash, in order to clear the stool. I then provide upper and lower hinges having one member of each hinge fastened to a sash stile, the other members of said hinges having slides movable respectively in said hinge guides. This construction provides suilicient movement of the sash to clear the stool. Since the hinges are outside of the sash grooves, while the sash cords lie within the sash grooves, I provide the slides of the uppermost hinges with integral arms, portions of which extend between the bottoms of the sash grooves and the edges of the sashes respectively, so that the sash cords or chains may be connected to said arms directly, thus affording a direct connection between the counter-balancing devices and the hinges.

Referring tothe drawings, A and B represent the sashes of a easement window and C and Dare the jambs of the window frame, having single sash grooves in contradistinction to two sash grooves as shown in the ordinary double hung window; E is the window-k sill; F is the top of the window frame and Gr is the stool. The top rails H of the window sashes as shown are rabbeted'at J to afford clearance between the rails H and the strips K and L of the top of the window frame. This affords provision for raising and lowering the window sashes and provides a weather-tight connection.
Both sashes are provided with counterbalancing means preferably in the form of balance weights O at one side only, counterbalancing the entire weight of each sash by the aid of which theV sashes are raised and my improved window appliances are provided for enabling the sashes to be swung inwardly over the stool G. The appliances are so constructed that provision is alforded for raising andV lowering the sashesrand for swinging them inwardly.
The window appliances comprise short hinge guides 0 and P on which the hinge members slide bodily. As shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, the hinge guides are outside of the sash groove and upon the face of the jamb or its equivalent, and adjacent to the inside edge of the sash groove. The hinge guides P for the lower hinges may be of substantially t-he form shown in Fig. 8, with continuous flanges instead of a broken flange, as shown in said ligure. These lower hinges VQ and hinge guides P are substantially like the hinges shown and described in my Patent No. 997,387 granted July 11, 1911, with the omission of the lifting levers.
The upper hinges for the sashes are shown Y in detail in the drawings and operate in the hinge guides shown in Fig. 8 in which the flange a at one side of the guide is cut but Fig. 9 shows the central member of a left-handed hinge in order to bring out more clearly the details of construction in a pespective view. The right-handed central member f is shown more fully in Fig. 7.
The hinge comprises the central member f' provided with the slide k adaptedto slide in the hinge guides 0. The arm CZ to which the weight cord or chain is attached preferably forms an integral part of the slide ic. Said arm l is preferably bent as at 0 to conform to the window frame. The member g of the hinge is provided'with the plate 7' adapted to be secured to the inner face of the sash stile and the pintle s preferably connects the hinge members.
It will be seen that each sash is counterbalanced by the balance weight at one side, so that the sash may be raised and loweredv by a slight pressure upward or downward and then easily swung inwardly over the stool G.
I claim and desire to obtain by Letters Patent the following: Y
A window frame having a sash groove in the jamb, a hinge guide outside of the said groove and upon the face of the jamb adjacent to the inside edge of the groove, a hinge having one member secured to the sash stile and the other member vertically movable in the hinge guide, said last-named member having an arm, a portion of which extends between the bottom of the sash groove and the edge of the sash, and a counter-balance means attached to saidv arm.
