ELEVATOR SAFETY DEVICE.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LOUIS G'YORFFY, a subject of the King of Hungary, residing at Alliance, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Elevator Safety Devices, of which the following is a specification, ref erence being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to an elevator safety device, and my invention aimsto provide:-First, a device that will prevent the sudden descent of an elevator cage when the hoisting cables thereof break. Second, a safety device consisting of comparatively few parts inexpensive to manufacture and easy to install. Third, a device that can be used in connection with various types of cable hoisted elevators. Fourth, a device that will save lives and guard against the loss of property due to the falling of elevator cages.
The invention further aims to accomplish the above results by a combination of mechanical elements that will be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed, and reference will now be had to the drawings, wherein:
Figure l is a front elevation of the elevator safety device, partly broken away and partly in section, showing the device in an inactive position, Fig. 2 is a similar view of a portion of the elevator showing the safety device in an active position, Fig. 8 is a plan of the device, and Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view of the same.
The reference numerals 1 denote vertical oppositely disposed channel guides having the confronting faces thereof provided with racks or teeth 2 presenting horizontal shoulders 3. Slidably mounted between these vertical guides is an elevator cage, comprising a bottom 4, walls 5 and transverse beams 6 arranged between the upper edges of the side walls of said cage. The beams 6 are arranged centrally of the top of the cage and in parallelism, said beams having the confronting faces thereof, contiguous to the upper edges, connected by an integral web 7, thereby providing substantially an H- shaped beam. The web 7, intermediate the ends thereof, is provided with two vertical openings 8 and movably arranged in these openings are vertical rods 9. necting head 10, at the upper ends of the a purpose that will presently appear.
Arranged upon the lower ends of the rods 9 a plate 1 1 which is retained upon said rods by cotter pins 15 or other fastening means. The plate 14. loosely fits in the lower part of the transverse beam and is guided therein by the beams G and the side walls of the elevator cage.
Encircling the rods 9, between the plate 1 1 and the web 7, are coiled compression springs 16 and these springs are normally retained under tension during the operation of the elevator cage.
Pivotally connected to the upper ends of the rods 9 by pins 1.7 are the bifurcated inner ends 18 of locking arms 19, said arms having the outer ends thereof beveled, as at 20 and normally resting upon the web 7. The locking arms 19 extend through straps 21 having the lower ends thereof bolt ed or otherwise secured, as at 22 to the outer sides of the beams 6, said straps being arranged at points intermediate the ends of the locking arms 19 for supporting the car from said arms.
In operation, the action of the safety device when the hoisting cables 12 break, is as followsz lmmcdiately upon the connecting head 10 being released, the tension of the springs 16 is released and these springs lower the plate 14. and the rods 9 relatively to the web 7. The locking arms 19 are therefore carried into engagement with the web 7 as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, this position of the locking arms causing the beveled ends 20 of said arms to protrude into the path of the teeth 2 and engage the shoulders 3. As the beveled ends of the locking arms will be held by said shoulders and the lower ends of the rods 9 guided by the plate 14 between the beams 6, the descent of the elevator cage will allow the locking arms to remain in a horizontal position to be engaged by the straps 21, which immediately prevent a further descent of the elevator cage. This action is instantaneous upon the hoisting cables 12 breaking, and with the inner ends of the locking arms movably anchored, said arms are quickly thrown into an active position, whereby the shoulders 13 of the connecting head 10 will rest upon the inner ends of the locking arms, with the outer ends of said arms in engagement with the shoulders 3 and in this manner support the elevator cage until repairs can be made. The locking arms are maintained in a rigid horizontal position forming a truss of sufficient strength to support the elevator cage, and after the hoisting cables have been repaired, said arms are quickly restored to their normal position ready again for instant use.
The safety device is made of strong and durable metal and can be used in connection with freight or passenger elevators.
What I claim is In an elevator safety device, the combination with vertical guides having the confronting faces thereof provided with teeth, a cage slidably mounted between said guides, and hoisting cables adapted to raise and lower said cage, of transverse beams arranged in parallelism at the top of said cage, a web connecting the confronting faces of said beams, vertical rods movably arranged in said web, a guide plate carried by the lower ends of said rods between said beams, coiled compression springs encircling said rods between said web and said plate, a connecting head connecting said rods and said hoisting cables and providing horizon-- tal shoulders, locking arms having the inner ends thereof pivotally connected to said rods adjacent to said shoulders and the outer ends thereof beveled and adapted to engage the teeth of said guides, and straps carried by the outer sides of said beams and adapted to be engaged by said arms whereby the car will be supported from said straps.
