' My invention relates especially to elec-Q trically operated typewriters and has -for its object to reduce the labor of operating the machine by applying electric power to operate the escapement, the case shifting mechanism and the carriage returna'nd line spacing mechanisms. i
To the above and other ends my invention consists in the features of construction, combinations of devices and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
As I est-imatef`it, thepower required for, operatingthe printing key levers is about equally divided between the key lever restoring springv and t-he `associate type bar on the one hand and the4 escapement and its spring on the other; andl accordingly by actuating the. escapement electrically the labor of operating the printing keys is reduced about one-half.. At the same time,
the escapement operates more quickly'and being released automatically at the end of a. key stroke, the effect. of the escapement spring is obtained to restore the print-ing key, this action being the same whether the key -is operated slowly or quickly or even if it be held down. Further, the weight of the carriage does not materiallyaHect the f speed of'operation. The main spring and the escapement spring can be put under` any desired tension for quickening the operation withoutretarding the key lever. In order to accomplish thls result the universal bar pendentl is constructed to have a slight degree of' lost motionso that it may be moved indey and the powerv necessary to be appliedI by the operator to the escapement devlces proper in order to actuate them is 'practically negligible.'

When the tripper has closed the circuit by bringing the contact points together and Athe movement of the universal bar is continued ,it automatically trips 'off and breaks the circuit, thus bringing the escapement re'- storing springinto action. The tripping ils'eifected directly by the key lever acting on the universal'bar and the restoring spring does not aiectthe key lever until t-he type bar has nearly reached vthe platen,l when said spring comes into action. I regard the provision of 'a tripping device to close the electric circuit as essential, since otherwise the circuit would remain :closed as long as the key washeld down Vand when the key was released there wouldl ,be a tendency for the circuit 'to close again, causingrepeated spacing movements of the carriage.
In connect-ion with the mechanism, I provide a solenoid which is energized y immediately the 'depression on the shift key-is begun, the core of the solenoid acting to shift the platen. This will `remain in its shifted position afterr the key has been released until a character is printed by operating one of the printing keys, when the shifting mechanism -will be automatically released. To effect this result a hook is provided which coperates on the shift mechanism to hold the platen in its shifted position until said printing key is operated, whereupon i the hook is automatically released, the release being effected by the operation of the aforesaid rock shaft. The construction is such that no matter how quickly or lightly the shift key is depressed the platen or shiftable element is brought into posit-ionto print a capital letter and instantly locked, no additional manualforce being required to depress the shift `key beynd the initial, slight depression thereof. A tripper like thateniployed for the escapement mechanism may also be employed with the shifting mechanism to prevent a faulty7 operation of' the shift mechanism by tlfe maintenance of the shift key in depressed position during the printing of more than onelcharacter. Track-ways 4' fixed above the top plate coperate through antifriction balls 5 with the front bar 6 and rear bar 7 of arectangular truck which further comprises end bars 8. J ournaled in the end bars 10 is an axle 12 supporting a rotaryplaten 13. operatively connected with the right-hand e'nd of the platen isy a line spacing ratchet wheel 14 (Figs. 2 and 7) with which is associated a line spacing pawl 15, said pawl being pivvotally supported at 16 on an arm 17 bearing on the axle `12.' The ordinary line spacing devices further comprise a link 18 connecting the pawl 15 with a bell crank lever 19,

The platen frame is shiftable on the truck to change casethrough devices comprising ashift rodor track 25 (Fig. 1) on which bears a wheel or roller 26 journaled on the cross' bar 11. The rod 25 is comprised in a shiftable frame which further includes uprights 27 and a connecting cross bar 28 from the ends of which depend arms 29'each of which is pivotally connected at 30 with the rear armof a lever 31. The levers 31, as best shown in Fig. 6, are secured to a rock shaft 32 near its ends, said rock shaft tak- -ing bearings in the sides of the base 1. The
arms ofthe levers 31, forward of the rock shaft 32, have riveted tothem at 33 a U- shaped plate 34, the late 34 and the arms 31 constituting in e ect a single member. Pivoted on screw studsl35 to each side of the member 34 are forwardly extending levers 36 each terminating in a shift key 37. A leaf spring 38 is screwed at its middle to the bottom of the member 34, the ends of said spring curving upward and underlyin the levers 36. A screw 39 coperates wit the right-hand end of the spring 38 to stiffen the same; but the usual correspondin'g screw at the left is dispensed with. 'A restoring spring- 38a is connected to the member`34- (Fig.,6). -The construct-ion is .such that the shift keys 37 are yeldingly connected with the platen shifting frame.
Pivoted at 40 to the left-hand lever 36 is an upright spring-pressed lever 41 provided with a finger p1ece^`42 and terminating at lits lower end in a hook 43 which is adapted l to coperate with a xed abutment -or bracket 44 to lock the shift frame in opeaf spectively are securedby screws 79 to-a @fiber or the like (Figs- 1 and l3). When one of the keys 37 is depressedvit operates to turn the rock' shaft 32 and raise the platen shifting frame which operates to move upward the platen across the machine above the key levers frame 10, 11 and platen, this shifting movement of the platen and platen frame not affecting the truck 6, 7, 8. l The letter spacing movements of the platen and the platen carriage are-controlled by devices comprising a feed rack 45 secured to. arms 46 pivoted on the truck bar 7. Said rack 45 is normally maintained in spring-pressed relationship with a feed pinion 47 which is operatively connected with toothed escapement wheels 48 and 49. Coperative with said escapement wheels is a feed dog 50 mounted at the topof a dog rocker 51 piv oted on the machine frame and provided withl a restoring spring 52. The dog rocker is connected-by a link 53\wth an armv 4 fixed to `and projecting rearward from an escapement rock shaft 55 which extend an is journaled in the sides ofthe base. Projecting 'rearward from the roc'k shaft 55 near its ends are crank arms 56 from which depend arms 57 supporting a universal bar 58,? said universal bar underlyinga set' of printing key levers 59 and being operative thereby to cause the feed dog 50 to coperate with the escapement Wheels 48 and 49 to permit leftward letter space movements of the carriage to take place under the pull of a main spring which is contained in a spring drum 60 connected with the carriage truck by a band or strap 61.
The key levers 59 are crurn bar 62 and fulcrumed on a fulare each provided with a lin er key 68 and a restoring spring 64. Eal key lever is connected with an associate type bar by a train of devices coinprising a link G6, a sub-lever G7 and a second link 68. The type bars are `piv'otally supported on hangers 69 circularly arranged and secured to a stationary support 70.
The type bars are adapted to coperate with the front face of the platen through a ribbon 71 mounted on spools 72 which are adapted to be rotated in the usual or any other suitable manner so as to feed the rib- 'bon lengthwise. The vibratory movements of the ribbon are controlled by a vibrator 7 3 through which the ribbon is threaded, said vibrator being connected by the usual or other suitable devices including a link 73a' withan arm 74 fixed to and projecting rearward from the rock shaft 55. The parts thus far described are or may be of the usual .character found in the No. 10 Remington machine. Y n
The machineis'colmected with a source of electrical power such as electric light socket by-wires 75 and 76 which run replate 80 of cured totheirear of thebajse 1 by screws 80, and insulates the contacts '77 and ,78 from the machine frame. As -will be understood from' Figs. 1, 3`and 8, separate magnets and associate condensers'are provided fort-he escapement, the platen shift and the carriage returnv mechanism respectively` and thev machine is so'wired as to enable the current from the contacts 77 and 7 8 to energize one solenoid without a'ectingvthe others. The
circuit is normally open, sets of spring contact devices being provided, one set for each solenoid, the contacts of each set being nor- -mally separated but beingv adapted to be brought into contact to effect the action of the mechanisms with which they are associated, z'. e., the escapement, th'evplavten shift and the carriage return. It will further be understood thatthe solenoidal magnets, condensers and contact devices are or may be ofv any known construction which is adapted to the purposes of my present invention and since these electrical devices in themselves are not of my invention it is not considered to metal contacts 77 and 78 whichl necessary to describe them with any. great particularity.

As soon as the actuated key lever 59 contacts with the top of the universal bar 58, downward movement of the universal bar will begin and corresponding movement of the tripper 110, 113 will take place. A very slight extent of downward movement of the latter will cause the finger 113 to depress the flexible arm 88 and bring the contact 90 into engagement with the contact 89, thus closing the electric circuit and energizing the solenoid 83 which will ull the armature 86 upward. The upwar movement of the armature actuates the. leverl 115,- causing the forward arm of the lever to pull down on the link 117, the link acting through the left-hand crank arm 56 to rock the shaft 55. By reason of the lost motion at the slots 118, the rock shaft 55 may move ahead of the universal bar, and through the crank arm 54: and link 53 may operate the dog rocker 51,',causing the dog 50 to disengage from the escapement wheel 49 and engage with thel escapement wheel 48. The abutment 102 is so adjusted that it will act against the cam edge 111 to force the tripper rearward so as yto cause the finger 113 to `slide oli' thearm 88, releasing t-he latter and permitting it through y ,its inherent springiness to swing backward to normal position against the stop arm 97, and. also permitting the arm 87 to swing back against the under side of the headed stop 96. As soon as the arm- 88 is released, the. contacts 89 and 90 will separate, thus breaking the circuit and denergizing the magnet whereupon the armature 86 will drop out of the solenoid and the connected normal position. In a typewriting machine, the'combination of a power driven carriage, a platen thereon, a line spacing ratchet wheel connected with said platen, power mechanism for returning the carriage, a lever on t-he carriage connected with said power mechanism, a second lever on the carriage, a rod connecting said levers, a line spacing pawl connected to saidv second lever., an abutment on said rod, `and ay cooperating fixed abutment, said abutnien'ts `co-acting during the carriage return to cushion the arrest of the-carriage and effect the line spacing of the platen.

Ina typewriting machine, the conibination of a power driven carri-age, a platen thereon, a key controlled electro-mag'-` net,.a carriage restoring lever on the frame of the machine flexibly connected with the armature of said magnet, a pair .of levers on the carriage, one of said levers being conlnested with said carriage restoring lever, a
rod connecting said pair of levers, and a platen line spacing device connected with the second of said pair of levers.

In a typewriting machine, the combination -of a powerl driven carriage, a platen thereon, an electro-magnet, devices controlled by a key at the front of the inacliine for energizing said magnet a carriage restoring lever on the frame of lthe machine flexibly connected with the armature of said magnet, a pair of levers on the carriage, one of said levers being connected with said carriage restoring lever, a rod connectin said pair of levers, ar platen line spacing evice connected with the second of said pair of levers, an adjustable abutment on said rod and a coperating abutment on the frame of the machine.
