This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in hand-hole plates, and relates more specifically to means for securing hand-hole plates in position in boilers.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple, cheap and effective hand-hole plate provided with means for securing same in position without the aid of nuts, screws or like objectionable devices now generally employed.
With the above and other objects in view which will appear as the invention is hereinafter more specifically described and then specifically claimed, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts as set forth and shown in the accompanying drawing showing preferable embodiments of the invention, and to which reference will be had in the further description, like numerals being employed to designate like parts throughout the different views, in which Figure 1, is a sectional view showing one of my improved hand-hole plates secured in position in a boiler, Fig. 2, is a view in front elevation thereof, Fig. 3, is a plan view of the hand-hole plate showing the boiler head in section, and Fig. 4:, is a sectional view showing a modified form of construction.
In the drawings, 5 indicates a portion of a boiler plate, provided with a hand-hole 6 for well known purposes.
The hand-hole plate designated by the numeral 7, is in substantially the form of a disk which is reduced in diameter for substantially one half of its thickness, forming a circular seat 8 and an annular shoulder 9. On thiscircular ring or asket 10, which engages the seat is formed being substantially the same as the diameter of the hand-hole 6, so that the metallic ring or gasket 11 will engage with the inner face of the boiler plate 5, and, when the plate 7 is tightened, a portion of the circular seat will be drawn into the hand-hole as the resilient ring or gasket 10 compresses. The disk 7, on its outer face is provided with a centrally-disposed stem 12, through which is a slot 1%, located close to the base of the stem and which receives a securing wedge or key 15. Obviously,when the plate is in position, and the wedge or key is inserted in the slot in the stem and then tightened, the plate will be securely held in place, and a tight joint also effected between the plate 7 and the boiler plate 5, the resilient gasket compressing as the key or wedge is tightened.
In the construction shown in Fig. 4, in so far as the plate per 86 and the means of securing same in position is concerned, the same is identical with that above described. In this view however, I show the employment of a single gasket or packing ring 16 which packing may be of any desired or preferred form. Upon loosening the key, the hand-hole plate may be forced inwardly after the key has been removed to give access to the boiler head.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim is 1-- The combination with a boiler having a hand-hole, of a hand-hole cover comprising a member having its body-portion substantially solid and of a peripheral configuration approximating that of the hand-hole, said body-portion having its rear or inner portion formed with a peripheral flange projecting outwardly, the inner faces of the flange and body-portion having substantially co-incident planes, the distance between the forward faces of the flange and body-portion being greater than the thickness of the boiler plate, said body-portion also having an integral forwardly-projecting fastening member slotted diametrically seat 8, is mounted a resilient 5 against the annular shoulder 9 of the plate, and is held thereon by a metallic ring or gasket 11.
