Be it known that I, RALPH C. SEYMOUR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Larchn'iont, in the county of Westchester and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Binding and Folding Machines, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to machines for binding and folding magazines, pamphlets and the like, although in certain of its features the invention is applicable to folders generally.
Objects of the invention are to provide a new mechanism for the rapid and accurate binding and folding of a plurality of sheets while maintaining a high quality in the product; to provide in such a mechanism for easy and balanced running of the folding devices at high speed; to provide such a mechanism wherein the sheets are yst-opped and started quickly and easily while providing exact registration to the stopped sheets; to provide such a mechanism having a rapid and effective sheet delivery; to provide novel means for controlling the folding jaws to get a large product relatively to the mechanism employed. These and other objects of invention will in part be obvious and will in part more fully appear herein.
The invention consists in the novel parts, arrangements, constructions, combinations and improvements, herein shown and described.
The accompanying drawings, referred to herein and forming a part hereof, illustrate one embodiment of the invention, the same serving in connection with the description herein to explain the principles of the invention.
Of the drawings: Figure l is a side elevation of a machine constructed in accordance with the principles of the invention; Fig. 2 is an end elevation looking at Fig. l from the left, with the external gearing shown in outline only; Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation on the line A-B of Fig. l, looking in the direction of the arrows; Fig. 4 is an end elevation, on an enlarged scale, and being partly diagrammatic, showing the opening of the folding aws and the `folding of the sheet bundle thereinto over the fold ing blade; Fig. 5 is a view of the Same kind as Fig. 4 and showing the transfer of the folded sheets to the delivery cylinder; Fig. 6 is a view of the same kind as Fig. 4, showing the jaws after they have been tumbled into position for the succeeding folding operation. Fig. 7 is a side elevation, on an enlarged scale, of the folding jaw mechanism; and Fig. 8 is a top plan view of the machine.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, which illustrate by way of eXarnple an embodiment of the invention, means are provided for conveying the bundle of sheets to be bound from any suitable sources of sheet supply along a pathway l. Said sheet conveying means are shown herein as tapes 2 working over suitable rolls 3 and 4. Coperating therewith are shown a series of tapes 8, working over series of'rolls 9, 10 and ll.-
Said tapes 8 are also acted upon by a series of tightening rolls 12. ln the present embodiment of the invention, these sheet-conveying means are' shown arranged to convey the sheets continuously past the stitching to the folding position.
Sheet binding means are provided, and the illustrated form thereof comprises stationary wire stitchers 15 and 16. These stitchers are shown arranged longitudinally of the path of travel of the sheets. That is,
vthe stitches from the stitchers are inserted in the bundle of sheets in line with each other longitudinally, and also longitudinally of the path of travel of the sheets. Suitable operating means for the stitchers will also be provided, such operating means being old, and is omitted for the sake of clearness in showing the other parts.
Suitable means are provided for stopping and registering the sheets for stitching. This is for the double purpose of carefully and exactly registering the sheets fed along the pathway l with respect to each other prior to fastening them together, as it may be found convenient to feed in the sheets from a plurality of sources of supplies. It is also desirable to insure that sheets supplied from a single source may be carefully land accurately registered. The sheets in addition are brought momentarily to rest relatively to the stapling devices. The form of stopping and registering means shown comprises a reciprocating gate 20, consisting of a plurality of fingers extending between the tapes 2. The gate 20 is reciproeably mounted on the machine frame and connects by links 21 to arms 22 fixed to a shaft 23 carried by the machine frame. Fixed also to the shaft 23 is an arm 24 having a cam roll 25 cooperating with a cam 26 upon the shaft 27.
Means are provided for promptly and accurately starting the stitched bundle of sheets toward the folding devices. The illustrated form thereof comprises a series of driven rolls 30 located underneath the pathway of the sheets, and a series of drop rollers 31 carried on arms 32 fixed to a shaft 83 carried on the machine frame. Suitable means for raising and dropping the drop rollers onto the driven rollers 30 will be provided, but are not shown herein, same being well known.
An adjustable stop 40 located in the pathway 1 is provided for bringing the stitched sheets into accurate position with reference to the folding mechanism. This stop serves to position the sheets longitudinally. Side guides or registers 44 and 45 are also provided for positioning the bundle of sheets sidewise. These guides may be adjustably mounted upon a suitable support or table 46.
Located below the bundle of sheets in th'e folding position is the folding blade 50. Said folding blade is also shown located longitudinally of the pathway along which the sheets are conveyed to the folding position and acts to fold the sheet bundle along the stitches. The blade is given a yielding action relatively to the traveling jaws, and for this purpose it is pivotally mounted at 51 and spring pressed by springs 52 against the vertical side of the recess 53. This recess is inclined on the opposite side so as to permit the blade to move in opposition to its springs 52 during the moving away of the folding jaws carrying the folded sheet bundle 0H the blade. The sheet support is also shown cut out or recessed at 54 to allow room for the folding jaws to fold down over the blade.
The folding jaws are mounted on a pair of arms rotating about a center to fold the sheets over the blade and carry them away to delivery, and to deliver them without a pause or change of direction at either the folding or delivery positions. The embodied form of such devices comprises a shaft 60 mounted in the machine frame and driven by the gear train 59 from the shaft Q7. Fixed to the shaft 60 are arms 61 and 62, and a counter balance 63 is shownfon the opposite side of the shaft from said arms. Journaled in the arms 61 and 62 are stub shafts and 71 to which are fixed arms or members 72 and 78. Extending across between the arms 72 and 73, and fixed thereto is a bar 74, to which is fixed the folding aw 75. Rot-atably mounted on the arms or members 72 and 73 and extending across therebetween is the shaft 77 to which is fixed the other folding jaw 7 S. Fixed to the shaft 77 is an arm 79, to which is pivoted a pin S0 working in an aperture in the bracket S1, which bracket is fixed to the arm 7 3. Coiled about the pin 8O is a spring S2 working between the bracket arm 81 and an adjusting nut 83 threaded on the pin 80, to provide spring action for the folding jaws and to regulate such action. Fixed to the other end of the shaft 77 is an arm 85 provided with a cam roll 8G. Adjacent to the folding position is a stationary caln 87, adjustable as to its position, for opening the jaws for folding, and a similar cam S8 is provided at the delivery position. The operation of these jaw opening and closing devices is substantially as follows: The spring 82 acts between the bracket arm Sl and the nut 83 to press the slidable pin SO, to rotate the shaft 77 by means of the arm 79, to move the rotatable jaw 78 into the closed position against the fixed jaw 7 lVlien, however, the cam roll SG on the arm S5 meets one of the cams 87 or 88, it serves to rotate the shaft 77 in the opposite direction, swinging the jaw 7 8 away from the jaw 75, and moving the pin 80 against the tension of the spring 82. When the cam ceases to act, the spring 82 will again press the jaws together. The jaws and 7S also rotate together relatively to the arms G1 and GQ, rotating with the shafts 70 and 7l ournaled in said arms. To cause and to control this rotation, on the outside end of the shaft 70 is provided an arm or head 95 fixed substantially centrally of its length to said shaft 70 and having near each end thereof cam rolls 9G and 97. Carried on the machine frame, is shown a box cam 9S and a box cam 99 in which the cam rolls 96 and 97 run during the greater part of their travel. Suitable means are shown at the folding position for giving the proper folding movement to the jaws by causing them to rotate together relatively to their arms 61 and G2. The open jaws advance on to the blade in a curved line and at the termination of that movement the jaws snap shut, thus folding the sheets together over the blade. The closed jaws then begin their movement in the opposite direction along a curved path carrying away the folded sheets off the blade. The blade at the same time yields on its bearings in the direction of travel of the aws to give an easy and smooth withdrawal of the folded sheets. The edges of the sheets'slip out laterally from beneath the tapes 8 and are carried away freely to the delivery position.
The moving means for the folding jaws comprises a. rotating cam 105, having three grooves therein, which may be substantially parallel to radii from the axis of rotation of the cam. The cam 105 is driven by the gear 104 from the gear 145 on the shaft 60. Said cam is shown herein with three such grooves, 106, 107 and 108. The jaws approach the folding position substantially as shown in dotted lines at (a) in Fig. 4, the cam rolls 96 and 97 running into cam 99. The forward cam roll, moving forward, enters one of the grooves of the rotating cam 105, thus causing the folding jaws to be rotated into thc position shown in full lines in Fig. 4 of the drawings, the cani 87 serving at the same time to open the folding jaws. The combined movement of the arms 61 and 62 and of the rotating cam 105, causes this movement of rotation of the pair of folding jaws together relatively to the arms 61 and 62 to continue until the other cam roll is brought into position to enter the cam 98. In the meantime the folding jaws have snapped together upon the sheet bundle and carried the folded sheets away with them, as already described, the jaws being now in the position relatively to their carrier arms shown in Fig.- 5 of the drawings, and being held in that position by the cam rolls 96 and 97 traveling in the cam 98. It will thus be seen that the aws are point-ing backwardly and carrying the folded and stitched sheets by the fold, the folded edge being forward and the pamphlet trailing freely backwardly through the air.
Suitable delivery devices are provided and in the illustrated form thereof, a delivery cylinder 115 is provided, conveniently located a quarter circumference from the folding blade in the path of travel of the folding jaws. The delivery cylinder is shown provided with a set of grippers 116 carried upon the shaft 117, which shaft is j ournaled in the delivery cylinder 115. Fixed to the shaft 117 is an arm 118, having a cam roll 119. Cooperating with the cam roll 119 is a cam 120 suitably fixed upon the machine frame. Fixed to the shaft 117 is an arm 121, pivoted to which is a slidable pin 122, the other end of which .bears in an apertured lug 123 carried on the cylinder 115. Acting between the lug 123 and a nut 125, threaded on the pin 122, is a coil spring 124. The spring 124 is arranged to act upon the arm 121 to normally keep the grippers 116 in the closed position, but the grippers are opened by the cam 120 working against said spring to receive and to deliver the sheet.
Suitable means for receiving the folded product from the delivery cylinder are provided, and the form thereof herein shown comprises an intermittent traveling conveyer 130 traveling over a roll 131, and being driven in a suitable manner, said conveyer being only partly shown in the drawings herewith. Suitable stripping fingers 132 are also provided for stripping'the product from the delivery cylinder and causing it to drop upon the conveyer 130. The cam 120 may be shaped and proportioned for opening the grippers at the delivery position, to drop the folded magazine and then to close down on the new one just delivered to said gripper from the folding jaws.
The cylinder 115 is cut away or recessed, as shown at 185 to permit the folding jaws and the grippers 116 to trail through each other during the delivering and transfer of the sheets from the folding jaws to the delivery cylinder, and the folding jaws are recessed for this purpose, as shown in Figs. 1 and 7 of the drawings. Means are also provided for reversing the folding jaws subsequentto the delivery of the boolr to the delivery cylinder so that they may approach the folding blade in proper position, that is with the point of the jaws forward as shown at (a) in Fig. 4. For this purpose a rotary cam 140 is provided between the other end of the cams 98 and 99 (see Fig. 5) just beyond the delivery cylinder. Said cam 140 is provided with cam grooves 141, 142 and 143, similar to those already described. Said cam is rotatably mounted upon the machine frame and driven by a suitable gear 144 from a gear 145 upon the shaft 60.
The manner of operation of the herein described mechanism will be clearly understood from the statements of operation already given; and it will be further understood that a mechanism has been provided which realizes the objects of invention and the advantages set forth, together with other objects and advantages.
The invention in its broader aspects, is not limited to the particular constructions shown, nor to any particular constructions by which it has been or may be carried into effect, as many changes may be made in the construction without departing from the main principles of the invention and with out sacrificing its chief advantages.
lhat I do claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A folding machine including in combination a rotating carrier, a set of folding jaws mounted thereon, a fixed folding blade, means for causing said folding jaws to approach said folding blade pointed toward said blade and to fold the sheets and to leave the folding blade carrying the folded sheets and pointing toward said folding blade, delivery means for taking the folded sheets from said jaws and means for turning the jaws to point toward the blade after the delivery of the sheets and as they again approach the folding blade.
2. A folding machine including in combination a traveling carrier, a set of folding jaws mounted thereon, a fixed folding blade, means for causing said folding jaws to approach said folding blade pointed toward said blade and to fold the sheets and to leave the folding blade carrying the folded sheets and pointing toward said folding blade, delivery means for taking the folded sheets from said jaws and means for turning the jaws to point toward the blade after the delivery of the sheets and as they again approach the folding blade.
3. A vfolding machine including in combination a rotating carrier, a set of folding jaws mounted thereon, a fixed folding blade, means for rotating the folding jaws on to and off the folding blade to fold and take the sheets, delivery means for receiving the sheets from said folding jaws, and means for rotating said jaws after the delivery to bring them into position to be rotated over the folding blade when they next approach the blade.
4. A folding machine including` in combi` nation a traveling carrier, a set of folding jaws mounted thereon, a fixed folding blade, means for rotating the folding jaws on to and off the folding blade to fold and take the sheets, delivery means for receiving the sheets from said folding jaws, and means for rotating said jaws after the delivery to bring them into position to be rotated over the folding blade when they nextapproach the blade.
5. A folding machine including in combination a rotating carrier, a set of folding jaws mounted thereon, a fixed folding blade, means for rotating said jaws on to and off the blade to fold and take the sheets, means for holding the folding aws pointed backwardly as they leave the folding blade with the folded sheets, delivery means for receiving the folded sheets from the folding aws and means between the delivery means andr the folding blade for positioning the folding jaws for again cooperating with said blade.

7. A folding machine including in combination a rotating carrier, a fixed folding blade, a set of folding jaws mounted on said carrier and pointing toward said blade as they approach it, means for giving said folding jaws a half rotation in the opposite direction to their carrier as they pass the folding' blade to fold and take the sheet, means for holding the folding jaws at. rest relatively to their carrier they leave the folding blade,the jaws pointing backwardly, de-
livery means for taking the sheets from the jaw when so pointing baeltwardly, and means for giving the folding jaws a half rotation after delivery of the sheets and before they again reach the folding blade.
8. A folding machine including in combination a rotating carrier, a fixed folding blade, a set of folding jaws rotatably mounted on said carrier, means for giving the jaws a semi-rotation in the opposite direction.

A folding machine including in combination a fixed folding blade, a rotating` carrier, a set of folding jaws carried upon and intermittently rotatable relatively to said carrier, and coacting with said folding blade to fold the sheets thereover and carry them away therefrom, and a set of rotating delivery grippers for taking the folded sheets from said folding jaws while said jaws are at rest relatively to their carrier.
10. A folding machine including in combination a straight pathway along which the sheets travel, a fixed folding blade ar ranged longitudinally beneath the path of the sheets, a rotating carrier having a set of folding jaws arranged longitudinally above said path of travel of the sheets, and cooperating with said folding blade to fold the sheets and then carry them away with the fold held tangentially with respect to the rotating carrier, and a set of rotating delivery grippers for taking the sheets by their folded edge from said folding jaws.
11. A folding machine including in combination a. straight pathway along which the sheets travel. a fixed folding blade arranged longitudinally beneath the path of the sheets, a rotating carrier having a set of folding jaws arranged longitudinally above said path of travel of the sheets, and cooperating with said folding blade to fold the sheets and then carry them away by the fold and free from the mechanism. a set of rotating delivery grippers for taking the sheets by their folded edge from said folding jaws and a` traveling conveyer upon which the delivery grippers drop the folded sheets.

A binding and folding machine including in combination means for traveling the sheets along a straight pathv` a folding blade beneath the arrested sheets, a rotating' setl of folding jaws operating from above to fold said sheets over said folding blade and to carry them away by the fold, and free from contact with the mechanism .l (it) delivery means for receiving said folded sheets from said folding jaws by the fold folded into said jaws by said folding blade.
13. A binding and folding machine including in combination means for traveling the sheets along a straight path, a folding blade beneath the arrested sheets, means for bringing the sheets into position for folding, a rotating set of folding jaws operating from above to fold said sheets over said folding blade and to carry them away by the fold, and free from contact with the mechanism delivery means for receiving said folded sheets from said folding jaws l by the fold folded into said jaws by said folding blade.
14. A machine of the kind described including in combination, a path along which the sheets are progressed, a plurality of stitchers arranged longitudinally along said path, a folding blade arranged longitudinally below said path, a rotating set of folding jaws arranged longitudinally above said path and coperating with said blade to fold the sheets along the line of said stitches and to deliver them at the side of said path.
15. A machine of t-he kind described including in combination a path along which the sheets are progressed, a plurality of stitchers arranged longitudinally along said path, means forregistering the sheets for stitching and for holding them at rest during the stitching, a folding blade arranged longitudinally below said path, a rotating set of folding jaws arranged longitudinally above said path and cooperating with said blade to fold the sheets along the line of said stitches and to deliver them at the side of said path.
16. A machine of the kind described including in combination a path along which the sheets are progressed, a plurality of stationary stitchers arranged longitudinally along said path, means for registering the sheets for stitching and for holding them at rest during the stitching, a folding blade arranged longitudinally below said path, a rotating set of folding jaws arranged longitudinally above said path and coperating with said blade to fold the sheets along the line of said stitches and to deliver them at the side of said path.
17. A machine of the kind described including in combination a horizontal pathway along which the sheets are progressed, stitchers located along said pathway, means for stopping the sheets in register with said stitchers and holding them at rest during the stitching, a drop roller engaging the stitched sheets just after the completion of the stitching to start them toward the folder, a folding blade below said pathway and a set of traveling folding jaws above said pathway for folding said sheets over said blade and carrying them away upwardly.
1.8.,A machine of the kind described including in combination a horizontal pathway along which the sheets are progressed, a plurality of stitchers arranged longitudinally along said pathway, means for stopping the sheets in register with said stitchers and holding them at rest during the stitching, a drop roller engaging the stitched sheets just after the completion of the stitclr' ing to start them toward the folder, al folding blade arranged longitudinally below said path and a set OftraVeling folding jaws also arranged longitudinally of and above said path for folding the sheets over said blade along the line of stitches and to carry them away upwardly.
19. A machine of the kind described including in combination a horizontal pathway along whichvthe sheets are progressed, a plurality of stitchers arranged longitudinally along said pathway, means for stopping the sheets in register with said stitchers and holding them at rest during the stitching, a drop roller engaging the stitched sheets just after the complet-ion of the stitching to start them toward the folder, a folding blade arranged longitudinally below said path and a set of rot-ating folding jaws also arranged longitudinally of and above said path for folding the sheets over said blade along the line of stitches and to carry them away upwardly.
20. A folding machine including in combination a fixed folding blade, a pair of parallel rotating arms and a set of folding jaws rotatably mounted on said arms and coperating with said folding blade whereby the folded sheet is supported at the folded edge only and free from contact with the mechanism.
21. A folding machine including in combination a liXed folding blade, a pair of parallel rotating arms and a set of folding aws rotatably mounted on said arms and coperating with said folding blade, and means for intermittently rotating said aws.
22. A folding machine including in combination a iXed folding blade, a pair of parallel rotating arms and a set of folding jaws rotatably mounted on said arms and a coperating with said folding blade whereby the folded sheet is supported at the folded edge only and free from contact with the mechanism, and a set of rotating grippers for receiving the folded sheets from said folding jaws by said folded edge.
23. A folding machine including in combination a rotating carrier, a set of folding jaws rotatably mounted thereon, a cam, connections between said set of jaws and cam to keep said set of jaws from rotating relatively to said carrier, a folding blade, a rotating guide for rotating said jaws over the folding blade to fold and take the sheet, and
a second rotating guide at a different point' in the rotation of said set of jaws.
24. A folding machine including in combination a rotating carrier, a set of folding jaws rotatably mounted thereon, a cam, connections between said set of jaws and cam to keep said set of jaws from rotating relatively to said carrier, a folding blade, a rotating guide for rotating said set of jaws over said folding blade to fold t-he sheet thereinto, another cam for cooperating with said connections for keeping said set of aws from rotating relatively to said carrier and another rotary guide between said cams for rotating said set of jaws back to the original positio 25. A folding machine including in combination a rotating carrier, a shaft rotatably mounted on said carrier, a set of folding jaws connected to and rotating with said shaft, an arm connected to said shaft, a cam cooperating with said arm to keep said set of jaws from rotating relatively to its carrier, a folding blade, a device for rotating said set of jaws over the folding blade to fold the sheet thereinto, another cam coperating with said arm to keep said set of jaws from rotation relatively to said carrier, and another device for rotating said set of jaws back to the original position located between said two cams.

A folding machine including in combination a rotating carrier, a shaft rotatably mounted on said carrier, a set of folding jaws connected to and rotating with said shaft, an arm connected to said shaft, a cam cooperating with said arm to keep said set of jaws from rotating relatively to its carrier, a folding blade, a rotary guide for rotating said set of jaws over the folding blade to fold the sheet thereinto, another cam cooperating with said arm to keep said set of jaws from rotation relatively to said carrier, and another rotary guide for rotating said set of jaws back to the original position located between said two cams.

A folding machine including in combination a rotating carrier, a set of folding jaws mounted thereon, a fixed folding blade, meansV for maintaining said folding jaws pointed toward said blade as they approach said blade and to. fold the sheets and to leave the folding blade carrying the folded sheets and pointing toward said folding blade, delivery means for taking the folded sheets from said jaws, and means for turning the jaws to point toward the blade after the delivery of the sheets and as they again approach the folding blade.
28. A folding machine including in combination a traveling carrier, a set of folding jaws mounted thereon, a fixed folding blade, means for maintaining said folding jaws pointed toward said blade as they approach said blade and to fold the sheets and to leave the folding blade carrying the folded sheets and pointing toward said folding blade, delivery means for taking the folded sheets from said jaws, and means for turning the jaws to point toward the blade after the delivery of the sheets and as they again approach the folding blade.

A folding machine including in coinbination a folding blade, a rotating carrier` a shaft rotatably mounted on said carrier,r a pair of folding aws carried by said shaft. an arm fixed substantially cent `ally of its length to said shaft, a circular cam substantially concentric with the axis of rotation of said carrier, with which the ends of said arm engage, a rotary guide for engaging an end of said arm to impart a rotary motion to said folding jaws during the folding in of the sheet, and a rotary guide for engaging an end of said arm to rotate said pair of jaws back to position for the next succeeding folding operation.

A folding machine including in combination a folding blade, a rotating carrier, a shaft rotatably mounted on said carrier, a pair of folding jaws carried by said shaft, an arm fixed substantially centrally of its length to said shaft, a circular cam substantially concentric with the axis of rotation of said carrier, with which the ends of said arm engage, to hold said pair of jaws from rotation relatively to their carrier and to deliver one end of said arm into engagement with a rotary guide, a rotary guide for engaging an end of said arm to impart a rotary motion to said folding jaws during the folding in of the sheet, a circular cam concentric with said iirst-mentioned circular cam for receiving the ends of said arm as the arm passes out of engagement with said rotary cam and for holding said pair of jaws from rotation relatively to their carrier, and for delivering one end of said arm to a second rotary guide, a second rotary guide for engaging an end of said arm to rotate said pair of jaws and deliver the end of said arm into engagement again with said first-mentioned circular cam.

A folding machine including in combination a folding blade, a rotating carrier, a shaft rotatably mounted on said carrier, a pair of folding jaws carried by said shaft, an arm fixed substantially centrally of its length to said shaft, a circular cam substantially concentric with the axis of rotation of said carrier, with which the ends of said arm engage, to hold said pair of jaws from rotation relatively to their carrier and to deliver one end of said arm into engagement with a rotary guide, a rotary guide for engaging an end of said arm to impart a rotary motion to said foldingjaws during the folding in of the sheet, a circular cam concentric with said first-mentioned circular cam for receiving t-he ends of said arm as the arm passes out of engagement with said rotary Cam and for holding said pair of jaws from rotation relatively to their earrier, and for delivering one end of said arm to a second rotary guide, a second rotary guide for engaging an end of said arm to rotate said pair of jaws and deliver the end ot said arm into engagement again with said first-mentioned Circular cam, and delivery means for taking the folded sheet from said folding jaws between said rst and second rotary guides.
