a citizen of the United States, residing at Provo city, in the county of 'Utalrand State of Utah, have ibvented-certain new and.
useful Improvements in Railway-Rail Fasteners, of which the following isa specification.
The present invention relates to -.railway io-ties and means to fasten the rails thereon,
3 and my purpose is to provide a device that will hold the rails on a'inetallic tie at any desired point in the longitudinal length thereof.
1A further object is to provide a fastening 'means having the minimum number ofparts to secure the rails on the simplest form of metal ties and which may be assembled within the least time. V

Within the metal tie l of an upturned .channel shape, is secured reinforcing mem= bers 2, having a portion of the sides thereof I formed into locking cylinders 3. ,Another portion of the sides of said reinforcing mem bers 2 is not; so bent, but is left upstanding to form lugs 4: against which thegclainps 6 engage to .prevent outward. lateral inovement.- Except where the rails may be closer together as at switches the said. members 2 may be riveted within said' channel 1. places where the. rails may be placed closer than the standard Width and where more than two rails are carried on a tie the said members :2 are adj'ustably secured insaid channel 1. lVithin each of said reinforcing members 2 is fitted a cushion block '5, on which the rails are to be placed. These blocks are made of wood or fibrous material and supply under the rails the resiliency or cushion eflect desired. Adjacentsaid blocks 5 and on each end of each of them .is fitted one of. the clamps 6, portions thercofbcaring against the said upstanding lugs l to prevent the clamps from spreading apart. Each of said clamps has open slots T can therein to allow the sides of said channel l to engage therein. and the outer portions 5 of said clamps lock the sides of said channel against outward displacement. Said portions 8 have ballast placed against the sides thereof which-prevents lateral movement of the t ies. Vithin said portions 8 of said clamps are cut elongated openings J, partially registering with the said lockingcvlinders 3. Within said openings 9 of one of said clamps and through said cylinders are titted threaded bolts 10 having a cone shaped head on each, On each of said bolts 10 and within the said elongated openings 8) of the opposite clamp is fitted a frustoeonically shaped nut 11 portions of which extendinto the other end of said cylinders 'The purpose being that when said nuts are turned inon said bolts the said cone shaped head and cone shaped nut will press down on the said clamps and against the top oftheimier side of said cylindeisand in that way draw the portion 12 of said clai'n'ps down ,on'the baseflan'ge of the. rail.
I am aware of'the fact that others have used and patented metallic ties of'tlieclninnel shapef-but so far asknown to me none have provided as simple andefii'cient means for fasten'ing'the rails on the tie asshown and described herein, and especiallywherein the fastening-meanslnaybe adjustedto the different, positions on thetie wher'eon rails may be'secured. The featureof the downturned and inward pull of the rail engaging clamps as they grip the flange of the rail with the minimum number of parts is certaii l-ynovel.
Having thus described my device I desire to secure by Letters Patent and" claim l.
