To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMIL EINFELDT, of Davenport, county of Scott, and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Riveting-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to riveting machines,:= and consists of various improved features designed to render the machine portable in .character, compact in form, and powerful in operation; whereby it is adapted for use particularly in connection with structural iron-work in setting rivets in angles and corners without the necessity of turning or shifting the work.
In the accompanyingdrawings: Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved machine; Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same looking from the right of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation; and Fig. 4 is a plan view of the machine.
Referring to the drawings: 1 designates the supporting member of the machine, in this instance constituting the main fixed horizontal head or jaw, which member comprises a horizontal body portion or stem 2, from which depends at one end a fixed jaw proper 3, equipped with a riveting tool 8.
Slidably supported on the stem 2 is a horizontally shiftable frame or slide i, having end portions 5 and 6, the latter forming the movable jaw of the machine, and having an alined movement relative to the fixed jaw. A cylindrical block 8 depends from the frame 4 beneath the end portion 6, and carries a riveting tool 9, which is movable to and from the opposing riveting tool.
Adjust-ably supported on the stem 2 of the fixed jaw, and to the rear of end portion 5, is a block 11 comprising side portions 12, a topplate 13, and a cylindrical block 14, in which latter is mounted a rock-shaft 15.
Fixed to the rock-shaft and at each side of the block 14 are two downwardly extending arms 16, 16, between which is fixed a shaft 17 to which the rear ends of two links 10 are connected adjacent the rock-shaft 15, the opposite ends of which links are pivoted to the block 8, the portions of the two arms 16 extending between the shaft 17 and the rock-shaft 15, constituting in connection with the two links 10, a toggle joint connecting the fixed and movable jaws, and by means of which, as will now be described, the movements of the movable jaw are effected.
Pivoted to the free ends of the arms 16 are two upwardly extending links 18, 18, pivotally connected at their upper ends to slide-members 19, 19, movable vertically in guides 20, 20, disposed on the sides of a power cylinder 21, which latter is rigidly fastened to and supported by the stem 2 of the fixed jaw. The slide-members 19 are connected together at their upper ends by means of a horizontal cross-bar 22, mounted on the upper ends of upright rods 23 fixed rigidly at their lower ends to a piston 23' in the power cylinder.
The power cylinder is provided with a two-way valve 24, actuated by a handle 2%, and which is operable to admit a fluid under pressure, such as air, beneath the piston to cause the same to rise, which movement of the piston will raise the slide-members 19, thereby drawing links 18 upwardly. This movement of the links will act to elevate the lower ends of the arms 16, which action will rock the shaft 17, and straighten out the toggle-member, and in this manner thrust the links 10 forward, thereby moving the movable jaw toward the fixed jaw to perform the rivet-ing operation To restore the parts to their normal position, I provide two vertical springs 26, 26*, one on each side of the cylinder, which springs are connected at their lower ends to hooks 27 fixed to the cylinder, and at their upper ends to arms 28, secured to the upright rods 23. From this construction it will be seen that when the riveting operation is completed, and pressure to the cylinder is cut off and the exhaust opened to the outside, the two springs which had been tensioned by the upward movement of the piston, will operate to draw said piston downward, causing the toggle to be folded, and retracting the movable aw.
As a means for limiting the forward movement of the movable jaw in order to prevent the crushing of the rivets, there is provided on the lower side of the slide t at its rear end, a depending lug 29 in position to be engaged by the shaft 17 as the latter rises when the piston is actuated to extend the toggle. This lug will act as a stop and will prevent the further upward movement of the arms 16 and any further advance movement of the jaw.
As a means for varying the movement of the movable jaw with relation to the fixed jaw and thus provide means for adjusting the distance between the two jaws in order to take longer or shorter rivets, an adjusting set screw 30 is tapped through a depending lug 31 on the end of the stem 2, said screw being in position to engage the rear end of the block 14. It will be seen that by turning the screw 30, the block may be advanced on its support and held in its adjusted position, which will, through the connection of said block with the movable jaw,
set the latter forward with reference to the fixed jaw.
The machine may be supported for use in any desired manner which will permit of its being readily shifted and moved about to enable the riveting tools to be brought into operative relation to the rivets to be set. I prefer, however, to suspend the machine by means of a bail 32, pivoted to cross pieces 33 secured to the sides of the cylinder on bosses 34, which latter project sufficiently far from the side of the cylinder to leave room in which the links 18 may be moved, a handle 36 being applied to the rear end of the stem by means of which the machine may be manipulated.
While, in the above description, I have described a form of mechanism which in practice has been found to answer the purposes in view, it will be understood that the invention is not limited to any specific form or arrangement of parts, except in so far as such limitations are specified in the claims.
Having thus described my invention, its construction and mode of operation, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is as follows:
1. In a riveting machine, a fixed jaw member comprising a body portion and depending portions, one of which constitutes a fixed jaw, a movable jaw member com prising a body portion slidably supported on said fixed jaw member and sustaining the movable jaw, a shaft supporting member supported on the body portion of the fixed jaw member, a shaft carried by said shaft supporting member, arms depending from said shaft and carrying a shaft, links connecting with said shaft and the movable jaw, upwardly extending links connecting with said arms, a piston connecting with said last mentioned links, a cylinder in which said piston operates and an abutment member carried by said movable jaw member and engaging said shaft for limiting movement of the movable jaw member.
2. In a riveting machine, the combination of a fixed jaw member provided at one end with a laterally extending jaw, a movable jaw member shiftably supported on one side of the fixed jaw member to cooperate with the laterally fixed jaw, a power cylinder supported on the opposite s1de of the fixed jaw member, a piston in said cylinder, a toggle mechanism connecting the movable jaw with the fixed jaw member and ar ranged on the side of said fixed jaw member opposite the cylinder, and links connected at one end with the toggle mechanism and at their opposite ends with the piston and extending respectively on opposite sides of the fixed jaw member and cylinder.
3. In a riveting machine, the combination of a fixed jaw member provided with a laterally extending jaw, a movable jaw shiftably supported on one side of the fixed jaw member to cooperate with the fixed jaw, a power cylinder supported on the opposite side of the fixed jaw member, a piston in said cylinder, a piston rod connected to the piston, a cross-head connected with the piston. rod and extending beyond the sides of the cylinder, a toggle mechanism connect-- ing the fixed jaw member with the movable jaw and arranged at the side of said fixed jaw member opposite the power cylinder, actuating arms connected with the toggle mechanism, and links connecting said actuating arms with the ends of the cross-head and extending respectively at the sides of the cylinder.
4c. In a riveting machine, the combination of a fixed jaw member provided with a jaw, 100 a movable jaw member supported on the fixed member, a lever mechanism connecting the fixed member and the movable member, a power cylinder supported by the fixed member, a piston therein, a cross-head con- 5 nected with the piston and extending beyond the sides of the cylinder, a connection between the cross-head and lever mechanism for operating the latter, means for the admission of fluid beneath the piston to move 1 the same in one direction, and springs connected to the ends of the cross-head and to a relatively fixed part and acting to retract the piston.
5. In a riveting machine, the combination 5 of a fixed jaw member provided with a fixed jaw, a movable jaw supported thereby, a lever mechanism connecting the fixed memher and movable jaw, a power cylinder supported by the fixed member, a piston therein, 2 slides 19 on the cylinder connected with the piston, and links connecting the slides with the lever mechanism.
6. In a riveting machine, the combination of a fixed jaw member provided with a jaw, 5 a movable jaw supported thereon, a lever mechanism connecting the fixed jaw member and movable jaw, a power cylinder supported by the fixed jaw member, a piston therein, a cross-bar 22 carried by the piston, 130
and links connected to the ends of said crossbar and to the lever mechanism.
7. In a riveting machine, the combinatio of a fixed jaw member, a movable jaw supported thereon, a rock shaft carried by the fixed member, arms 16 connected with said shaft, a shaft 17 carried by the arms between their ends, links 10 each connected at one end to shaft 17 and at its opposite end to the movable jaw, a power cylinder, a piston therein, and connections between the piston and the ends of arms 16.
