This invention relates to new and useful improvements in gearing especially adapted part of this specificafor glue Spreaders and cookers, of the type used in veneer stock production, and-other work'requiring the application of glue. v More particularly the invention relates to the gearing for the glue-spreading rollers;
The object of the invention is to provide improvements whereby simplicity and eiiiciency combine in the machine to a desirable extent. y v v Through the'means provided, the spreadin rollers are adapted to be positively driven at the same rate of speed though their distances apart may vary. This allows the rollers to be adjusted with facility to suit different thicknesses of material to be coated with glue,vfor example, the sheets -from which veneer work is made.

Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 represents a lower glue container which may be steam heated by the usual means, and which is supported upon a frame 2. Also mounted within the openings 6 above the bearings 7, are slid'able supportmg blocks 10, provided with brackets 11 which support an upper glue receptacle 1.2. The receptacle12 maybe steam jacketed in the usual manner, and supplies the 'hq ud glue to the upper spreading roll 9. The blocks 10 rest upon the bearings 7, and are therefore movable therewith; therefore, when the upper roller 9 is elevated or depressed, the glue receptacle 12 will move in un son therewith. The wood or other material to be glued. is passed between the upper and lower rollers, and the upper roller is adjustably mounted to permit wood sheets of different thicknesses to pass through the machine. 7 a
- The above description relates to one well known type of gluespreaden-the various details of which may be altered without affecting the present invention.
The upper and lower rollers 9 and 3 may be rotated at the same speed in opposite directions, and elevated and lowered by the following mechanism at the same time, or
elevated and lowered while not rotating. The ends of the upper shaft 8 and the lower shaft 4 are connected by toggle joints formed by upper and lower links 13 and 14 which are connected at-pivots 15. Attached to the pivots 15 are reaches or bars 16 which eir vtend-around the rear side of the machine, and are pivotally attached to a threaded sleeve 17. The sleeve 17 is mounted on a screw'shaft 18 journaled in a bearing 19 and provided with a hand wheel 20. When the hand wheel 20 is rotated, the sleeve 17 is reciprocated, and the angle formed by the 'links "13and 14 will be varied. lVhen' the toggle' joints are thus actuated, the rollers 3 and 9 will be, elevated and depressed. To rotate the rollers 3 and 9 at the same speed and in opposite directions, there are mounted 611 the shafts 4 and 8 gears 21 and 22 respectively, which are of the same size; and mounted betweenthe said gears 21 and 22 are two idlers. 23 and 24:. As 'the' train of gearing thus constituted, consists of an even number of gears, the rolls 3 and 9 wi1l rotatefin opposite directions. The idler gears 23 and 24 are mounted on one of the toggle links, the gear 23. being mounted on the pivot 15, while the gear24 is mounted on the link 14. The axes of the intermeshing' gears are therefore always the same distance apart" irrespective of the position of the toggle joints; therefore the gears will always he in mesh.
