my invention being to provide a. shield of the kind stated WhlCh is simple, durable, be- ,ing practically unbreakable, eflicient, and

light in weight and easily manufactured and at slight cost, which may be readily arranged or mounted in operative position upon a pair of spectacles, eyeglasses, or the like, or removed from such position,

' which, when not in use, may be flattened out and readily carried in a vest-pocket, which, while permitting an unimpeded view therethrough laterally of the eye and spectaclelens and frame, is adapted to inclose, and deflect dust, dirt, or other particles from, the space between the eye and the spectaclelens-or frame and thereby prevent the entrance of suchparticles into the eye and the possible consequent injury of the eye thereby, and to improve generally upon articles of the kind stated.

With these objects in view, my invention resides in the novel construction, arrangement, and combination of the several parts of my new eye-shield, all as will hereinafter be described and afterward pointed'out in the claims.

Referring now to the drawings, wherein like reference letters and numerals refer to like parts throughout the several views, A indicates a pair of spectacles or the like on which my new eye-shields are adapted to be operatively arranged, a, b, o, d, and e indicating the bridge, bow, lens, temple, and side extensions, respectively, of said pair of spectacles.

My" new eye-shield proper comprises a foldable body-portion 1, which is of any suitable, preferably flexible, resilient, and transparent, material, such as celluloid, and which is adapted, when not in use or normally, as it might be said, to be opened out or unfolded, as shownparticularl in Fig;

- or sheet preferably of flexible, transparent celluloid, This said blank is preferably cut to and has, when in open or normal position, the shape-shown in Fig. 5, havlng a curved base-line and upwardly. convergmgtop edges, so that, when in folded operative position, it will neatly fit on a bow b of a .pair of spectacles and inclose the space between the eye and the lens and bow of said spectacles. Intermediate its ends and pref,- erably midway therebetween, said blank 5 is provided with a plurality of perforations 4:, in which is adapted to be arranged and fit a' preferably wire staple-shaped clip or other suitable frame-attaching device 4 having hook ends 4: adapted,'when the body portion 1 is in folded position, to loosely engage with, and thereby hold one side, which we will call the outer side, of the eyeshield on said spectacles A. At'its opposite ends, said blank 5 is' cut away, as shown particularly in Fig. 5,. to provide the shoulders 5 to receive and cooperate with said clip 2. As will be obvious, the blanks 5 may be cut to, any particular size to fit the particular size of spectacle frame or how with which they'are to be used. As shown in Fig. 1, my new eye-shields are employed in pairs, one for each bow of the pair of spectacles. The clip 2 comprises what might be called,'as' shown in Fig. 6, an H- 'shaped blank stamped from any suitable,

' preferably metallic, material, each of the legs thereof being preferably cut away, as at 2, to provide extensions 2''. This blank 2 is first bent or doubled upon'itself on the line ww, and is then secured on said body-portion 1 by pinching'one of its said legs upon one'of the shouldered ends of said blank 5, said shouldered end providing a seat for, and being substantially of a width equal to the length of, said doubled leg. An indentation 3 is now referably made on said doubled legof blank 2 to more firml' hold the same in position on said shouldere end 5' of blank 5. It will be noted that said extensions 2" are, as shown particularly in Fig. 3, bent or turned inwardly, so that when the body-portion- 1 is folded into closed op-- erative position and arranged upon a pair of spectacles, .SBIld GXtGDSIOHS 2 will extend i under and releasably engage with the frame or bow of said spectacles and thereby hold the other, or outer, side of said shield on said spectacles.

When not in use or normally, as it has I been said,'my new eye-shield is adapted to be. in flat opened-out or unfolded position, suchasshown in Fig. 8; when, however, itis desiredtomount the same upon a pair of spectacles, the free shouldered end 5 -said hook ends 4 of clip 4.- will resiliently engage with the frame or bow of said of spectacles and thereby hold the eye-shield pair 1 in proper operative position thereon, as shown clearly in Fig. 1. It will be seen that said clips 2 and 4 readily accommodate, re-

spectively, when the eye-shield is opera tively mounted upon a pair of spectacles, the bridge a and temples thereof. Whenever it is desired to dismount or remove the eye-shield from said pair of spectacles, this is readily accomplished by detaching said inturned extensions 2" and hook ends 4: from the frame of said spectacles, when I said free shouldered end of said body-portion 5 may be readily released from engagement with said free doubled leg of clip 2, and body-portion 5 then, due to its flexibility and resiliency, readily flattened out and so carried in a vest-pocket or the like. In order that said free shouldered end 5 of said body-portion 5 may be more securely held in, or prevented from pulling loose from, said doubled leg of said clip 2, I either provide said free doubled leg "with a similar circular indentation 3, .as shown particularly in Fig. 2, or with an inclined indentation 8, as shown in Fig. 8, and in this latter case preferably correspondingly slot the said free shouldered end 5 of body-portion 5, as at 7, to cooperate with said inclined indentation 8, as shown clearly in Figs. 8, 9, "and 10; and to strengthen said slotted end 5' of said body-portion, I may also provide the same with a reinforcing piece 6 having a slot 7' to correspond with said slot 7, as shown in Fig. 12. This reinforcing piece 6 may be stamped from any suitable -metallic material and is then doubled upon itself andpinched upon said shouldered end 5', being securely held thereon preferably by means of a similar circular indentation 3, as shown'in Fig. 12, or by means .of a small pin 3', as shown in'Fig. 13. It will be seen that my eye-shield is simple in construction, may be easily and readily manufactured and at comparatively slight cost, and fulfils all the objects hereinbefore mentioned; and it is obvious that minor changes in the arrangement, construction, and combination of the several parts thereof may be made and substituted for those hereinshown and described without departing from the nature and principle of my invention.

c Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure Letters Patent is: v

1. An eye-shield comprising a foldable body-portion normally in unfolded position and adapted when in folded position to fit on the bow of-a pair of spectacles or the like and to inclose the space between said bow onthe bow of a pair of spectacles or the like and to inclose the space between said bow and the eye of the user, a fastening-clip on one end of said body-portion adapted to releasably engage'with the other end of said body-portion to separably hold the ends of said body-portion together and to releasably engage with said bow and removably secure one side of said body-portion thereto when in folded position, and an attaching-clip on said body-portion between the ends thereof adapted to releasably engage with said bow and removably secure the other side of said body-portion thereto when in folded position; substantially as described.

3. An eye shield comprisin a foldable body-portion normally in unfo ded position and adapted when in folded position to fit on the bow of a pair of spectacles or, the like and to inclose the space between said how and the eye of the user, a fastening-clip on one end of said body-portion adapted to releasably engage with the otherend of said body-portion to separably secure the ends of said body-portion together and having attaching-hooks adapted to releasably en'- gage with said bow and removably secure one side of said body-portion thereto when in folded position, and an attaching-clip on said body-portion between the ends thereof having hooks adapted to releasably engage with said bow and removably secure the other side of said body-portion thereto when in folded position; substantially as described.

4. An eye-shield comprismg a foldable body-portion normally in unfolded position and adapted when in folded position. to'fit on the bow of a pair, of spectacles or. the like and to inclose the spacebetween said bow and the eye of the user a substantially H- 'shaped fastening-clip havin its legs folded upon'themselves, one 1e 0 said clip being secured to one end of saidbody portlon and the other leg of said clip being adapted to I releasably engage with the other end of said body-portion to separably secure the ends of said body-portion together, an inturnedextension on each of said legs adapted to releasably engage with said bow and removably secure one side of said body-portion thereto when in folded position, and an attaching-clip0n said body-portion between.

5. An eye-shield comprising a foldable body-portion normally in unfolded position and adapted when in foldedposition to fit like and to inclose the. space between said bow and the eye of the user, one of the ends of said bod -portion being provided with an elongate slot, a substantially H-shaped fastening-clip having its. legs folded upon on the bow of a pair ofspectacles or the I themselves one leg of said clip being secured to one end of said body-portion and the other leg of said clip being adapted to releasably receive the other or slotted endof said body-portion to separably secure the ends of said body-portion toget er and being provided with an elongated indentation, adapted to coiiperate with said slot, an inturned-extension on each of said legs adapted to 'releasably engage with said bow and "removably secure one side of said body-portion thereto when in folded position, and an attaching-clip on said body-portion between the ends thereof having hook-shaped ends adapted to releasably'engage with said bow and removably secure the other side of said body-portion thereto when in folded position; substantially as described.

6. An eye-shield comprising a 'foldable body-portion normally in unfolded position and adapted when in folded position to fit on the bow of a pair of spectacles or the like and to inclose the space between said bow and the eye of the user, one of the ends of said bodyortion being provided with an elongated s 01;, a slotted reinforcing piece on the slotted end ofsaid body-portion, a

substantially H-shaped fastening-clip having, its le folded upon themselves, one le of said 011 bein secured to one end of sai body-portion an the other leg of said clip being adapted to releasgbl receive the other or reinforcedend of ai body-portion to vseparably secure the ends of said body-portion together and being provided-with an elongated indentation 'ada ted to cooperate with said slotted and rein orced end of said body-portion, an inturned-extensiononeach of said legs adapted to releasably engage with said how and removably secureone side of said body-portion thereto when lit folded position, and an attaching-clip on substantially as described.

7. An eye-shield comprising a bod -portion of flexible transparent celluloi' normally in unfolded position and adapted when in folded position to fit on the bow of a pair of spectacles or the like and to inclosesthe space between said bow and the eye of the user, one of the ends of said body'- portion being provided with an elongated slot, a slotted metallic reinforcing piece on the slotted end of said body-portion, a substantially H -shaped metallic fastening-clip havmg its legs folded upon themselves, one leg of said clip being secured to one end of said bbdy-porti'on and the other leg of said clip 7 being adapted to releasably receive the other or reinforced end of said body-portion to separably secure the ends of sald body-portion together and being provided wlth an elongated indentation ada ted to cooperate with said slotted and rein orced end of said bodyortion, an inturne'd extension on each of said legs adapted to releasably engage with said bow and removably secure one side of said body-portion thereto when in folded position, and a substantially stapleshaped wire attaching-clip on said bodyortion between the ends thereof having ook-shaped ends adapted to releasably engage with said bow and removably secure the other side of said body-portion thereto when in folded position; substantially as described.
