DRESSING-COMB.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, RUTH L. POTTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Dressing-Comb, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to dressing combs and has for an object to provide a device of this character which will have a curved body portion having teeth extending laterally from the longitudinal edges so that as the curved body portion is moved over the scalp the entire series of teeth will be drawn along the portion of the scalp covered by the comb and impart a gentle massaging pressure thereupon.

Another object is to provide a device of this character having a handle portion so arranged as to permit the operators wrist and fore-arm to be held in a restful and natural position while manipulating the comb.

A further object is to provide a device of this character in which the body has teeth projecting from both sides thereof in the same plane and with the points in alinement, and having a straight handle and a body of involute form with the minor curve 29 of the end opposite the handle, the body being gradually thickened from the handle outward to reinforce the outer end of the body and stiffen it against any tendency of yielding too freely in use.

With the above advantages and other objects in view which will appear as the nature of my invention is better understood, my invention embraces the novel details of construction and combination of parts illustrated in the accompanying drawings shown in the following specification and set forth more fully in detail in the appended claim.

In the accompanying drawings,Figure 1 is a perspective View of the comb constructed in accordance with my invention showing the method of holding the same for easy manipulation. Fig. 2 is a plan view of my improved comb. Fig. 3 is an edge elevation of the same.

In a more detailed description of my invention in which like characters of reference designate similar parts in the views shown, 1 designates the body portion of the comb having a series of teeth 2 and 3 projecting laterally from its longitudinal edges.

silient material, such as celluloid, thin metal or the like, and has teeth projecting from both sides thereof in the same plane with the points in alinement, the body being of involute form with the minor curve at the end opposite the handle, the body being gradually thickened from the handle outward to reinforce the outer end of the body and stiffen it against any tendency to yielding too freely in use. This reinforcing fea ture is one of importance inasmuch as it will enable the user to cause the outer end of the comb to contact with the scalp irrespective of the shape of the head, so that thorough treatment will be secured.

The teeth are in alinement with the curved surface of the body portion of the comb and the teeth projecting from one longitudinal edge l are in alinement with correspondingly arranged teeth projecting from the other longitudinal edge 5 as shown. This alinement of corresponding teeth of each series permits the comb to be worked back and forth through the hair without kinking.

Projecting from one end of the body portion 1 is an integral handle portion 6 which is without curvature. The handle 6 extends in a tangential plane, or, in the plane of a tangent perpendicular to the end radius of curved body portion of the comb, and is preferably formed with its widest portion 7 remote from the body portion of the comb so as to form a convenient and comfortable grip for the operating hand. The longitudinal sides of the handle portion taper toward the body portion of the comb forming marginal depressions 8 and 9 adjacent the terminal teeth 10 and 11. The terminal teeth are considerably wider than the remaining teeth and constitute shoulders against which the thumb and fore-finger of the operating hand may be brought to hear when seated in said depressions in order to secure a comfortable and effective grip upon the handle when applying pressure to the comb. A particular advantage results from this angular position of the straight'handle portion namely; the hand and fore-arm of the operator will be in a natural and comfortable position during the manipulation of the comb regardless of whether the back, front, or side hair is being combed and regardless of which series of teeth is being used.

It will be noted that the comb can be operated by either a right or left hand person and that during the operation of the comb, the entire length of the curved series of teeth will be in contact with the surface of the scalp, the obvious advantage of which is to exert a gentle massaging pressure upon the scalp, whereby to maintain a healthy and virile condition of the scalp at all times.

By reference to Fig. 3 it will be seen that the comb includes an inner layer 25, and an outer layer 26 that define the body 1 and the handle 6. A filling strip 28 is interposed between the layers 25 and 26 in the handle 6, and is of the same thickness as the teeth 2 and 3. By constructing the comb from separate layers, each of these layers being relatively thin, it may be disposed in the desired curve Without danger of breaking, and should one of them be broken, but a single element of the comb, and not the entire body of the structure thereof is destroyed.

From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it is thought that the construction and operation of my invention will be easily understood without a more extended explanation, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion and minor details of construction may be made, within the scope of what is claimed, without sacrificing any of the advantages or departing from the spirit of the invention.
