To all lwhom 'it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOSEPH A. DUPUIS, citizen of the United States, residing at Portland, in the county of Multnomah and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hinges, ofl which the following is a specification.

This invention comprehends certain new and useful improvements in builders hardware and relates particularly to window sashes of that type that are arranged to swing inwardly either to the right or to the left, as desired, whereby the sashes may be easily cleaned, without exposing the window washer to the danger incidental to sitting or standing on the window sill so as to reach the outer surfacesv of the window pane, as is rendered necessary by those sashes which merely slide, my invention being therefore particularly adapted for use in the upper stories of offices or other buildings.

The invention has for its object in a window of the character above set forth, an improved construction of hinge, forming a swinging connection between either side of the main portion of the sash and the pane holding frame incorporated therein, the hinges of either side being capable of disconnection, whereby the pane holding frame may be swung inwardly either to the right or to the left, for the purposes of ventilation, or merely for the purpose of enabling the Aouter sides of the panes to be reached so as to be washed, without reaching out of the window frame.

With this and other objects in view as will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain constructions, arrangements and combinations of the parts that I shall hereinafter fully describe and claim.

For a full understanding of the invention, reference is to be had to the following de` scription and accompanying drawings, in which:

Figure 1 is a face view of a window constructed in accordance with my invention;

Fig. 2 is a detail face view of one pair of hinged plates; Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of one of the hinged bolts or pintles; Fig. 5 is a fragmentary View of the hinge plates.

Referring to the drawing, 1 designates the upper sash of a window, and 2 the lower sash thereof, each of said sashes including a pane carrying frame 8 to the sides of whlch hinged plates 9 are secured by screws or similar fastening devices, the same being arranged at opposite sides of the frames 8 1n pairs, as shown.

Each hinge plate 9 is formed with an upper pair of apertured ears 10 spaced from each other, and a corresponding pair of lower ears spaced from the upper pair, the ears being preferably formed by curling themetal ofwhich the plates9 are composed. 10 and 11, respectively, said boltsbeing encircled by springs 13, whereby they are held in operative position and being provided at their adjoining ends by finger pieces 14, whereby they may be easily retracted by merely pressing said finger piece together. The bolts 12 are formed with beveled outer ends '15 designed `to engage beveled ears 16 formed at the top and bottom of complemental hinge plates 17 secured by screws or the like to the walls of the main portions of the sashes. By the beveled construction of the ends 15 and ears 16, it is obvious that, the hinges may be automatically connected together, merely by swinging the open frame to a closed position. It is also evident that, as these hinges are alike on both sides of the sashes, the pane holding frames may be swung inwardly either to the right or to the left. It is, of course, to be understood that the frames 8 may have screen frames substituted for them, as it is possible to entirely remove .the frames 8, whenever desired.

From the foregoing description in connection with the accompanying drawing, the operation of my improved window sash will be apparent.

It is possible for either of the pane carrying frames to be swung inwardly, when desired, either to the right or to the left, so

Having thus described the invention7 `what is claimed as new is:

A hinge of the character described, comprising complemental plates one of which is formed with tivo pairs of apertured ears, the ears of each pair being spaced from each other and one pair of ears being spaced from the other, bolts mounted for longitudinal movement in the respective pairs of ears7 springs mounted between the ears of each pair and encircling the bolts and tending to move said bolts outwardly whereby the needed? outer ends of the bolts Will protrude outwardly from the outermost ears, the bolts being provided at their adjoining ends with fngenpieees and the other plate being formed at its ends With apertured ears spaced apart a distance to overlap the outer sides oit and contact with the outermost eers oi the tiret-named plate and designed J JOSEPH A.
