Be it known that I, JAMES PATTERSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rockwell, in the county of Marion and State of Florida, have invented new and useful Improvements in Rail-Clamping Devices, of which the following is a specification.
An object of the invention is to' provide a devicefor'rigidly clamping rails to railway ties.
My invention embodies among other features, a structure in which the clamping members thereof can be adjusted so that the force clamping the rail to the tie' can be increased or decreased, my device being so ar'- ranged that a rail can be easily and quickly `disconnected from a tie for the purpose of repairing the same or inserting a new rail.
To accomplish the desired result, use is made of atie provided'with a recessed end flange in-which the rail is adapted to seat with one side of the webof the rail abutting against' the end of the flange, slotted side flanges formed on the tie, a clamping bar pivotally mounted in the slots of the side flanges and adapted to engage the other side of the web of the rail, a wedge for insertion in the slots of the said side flanges and having one side thereof abutting againstl the clam-ping bar, the other side of the wedge being 1n engagement with a bracev formed on the tie and means for operating the said wedge for increasing or decreasingI the clamping engagement of bar with the said rail.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings constituting a part of this specification, in which s1milar characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of one o f my ties, showing the same in applied pos1- the clamping f tion. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section through the tie, taken substantially on the line 2-2 in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 3-3 in Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 4-4 in Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a fragmentary sectional view taken on the line 5-5'in Fig. 1.
Referring more particularly to the views, I provide a tie 10 having end flanges 11 provided with recesses 12, rails 13 being adapt-A ed to restjon a base 14 of the tie 10 with portions of the bases of the rails reposing within the recesses 12 and tvith one ofthe websfof each of the rails :itintting against the inner face of each of thelanges 11.-
Formed on the tie 10 and projecting outwardly from the sides thereof are side flanges 15 provided with vertically extending' slot-s 16 and an upwardly extending brace 17 is formedat one end of the-side flanges 15 `and extends transversely to the vtie 10. A clamping bar 18, consisting of a head 19 and spaced depending extensions 20,2 1s mounted on the side flanges 15 with the extensions' 20 passing through the slots 16, a bolt 21 being passed transversely through the tie 10v and through apertures'in the extensions 20 to pivot-ally retain the clamping bar -18 in engagement with the` tie 10. thehead- 19 of the clamping bar bemg` adapted to engage one side of the web of each of the rails 13. A wedge 22.I consisting of a head 23 and spaced extensions 24 is mounted between the brace 17 and-the clamping bar 18 with the extensions 24 of vthe wedge passing through the slot 16 of the side flanges 15. A set screw 25 is mounted to extend through the brace 17 `to engage a sideof the head 23 of the wedge 22 and a second set screw 26 is mounted to extend through one of the side flanges 15 to engage one of the extensions 24 of the said wedge 22.
In the use of my device, 'the set screws 25 and 26 are moved out vof engagement with the Wedge 22 so that the clamping bar 19 can be moved to unclamping position andthe rail 13 is then extended across the tie 10 with the base of the railreposingl idly secure the same to the tie 10, it being understood that a side 27 of the headf19 will lie against one side of the base of the rail.
With the use of the device described in connection with rails, the said rails'will be retained inrigidposition relatively to the ties and` can be easily` and quickly removed from the ties, while at the'same time when the rails are rigidly. clamped to the ties anyv lrail with one side of the web of the rail abut-ting against the said end flange, side flanges formed on the said tie and provided with slots, a brace extending transversely to the tie at one end of the said side flanges,
Va clamping bar pivotally mounted on the said tie with portions of the said clamping bar extending through the slots in the said side flanges and another portion of thesaid clamping bar for engagement with the other side of theweb of the rail, a wedge for engagement with the said brace and said clamping bar andset screws mounted to extend through the said brace and through one of the said side flanges to engage the said wedge for operating the same to move the said clamping bar into clamping engagement with the said rail.
2. A rail clamping device comprising a tie,'an end flange formed on the tie and provided With a recess adapted to receive the rail with one side ofthe web of the rail abutting against the said end flange, side flanges formed on the said tie and provided with slots, a brace extending transversely to the tie at one end of the said side flanges, a clamping bar pivotally mounted on the said tie with portions of the said clamping bar extending through the slots in the said side flanges and another vportion of the said clamping bar for engagement with the other side of the web of the rail, a wedge for engagement with the said brace and said clamping bar and adjusting means mounted on the said tie for operating the said wedge to move the said clamping bar into clamping position with the said rail.
3. A rail clamping device comprising a. tie, an end flange on thesaid tie, side flanges.
on the said tie, a clamping bar pivotally mounted on the said tie and engaging the said side flanges, a head on the said clamping bar for engagement with a rail mounted to abut against the said end flange and av ing bar for engagement with a rail mounted to abut against the said end flange and means mounted on the said tie and engaging the said clampingbar for retaining the said clamping bar in clamping-engagement with the said rail.
5. A rail clamping device comprising a tie, an end flange on the said tie and adapted to be engaged by .a rail, a clamping bar mounted to swing on the said tie and capable of being moved into. clamping engagement with the said rail, a wedge for engagement with the said tie and the said clamping bar andl set screws to move the said clamping bar into clamping engagement with the sai rail.

A rail clamping device comprising a tie, an end flange on the said tie and adapted to be engaged by a rail, a clamping bar mounted to swing on the said tie and capable of being moved into clamping engagement with the said rail, a wedge for engagement with the said tie and said clamping bar and means for operat-ing the said wedge to move the said clamping barvinto clampingv engagement with the said rail.
7. A rail clamping device comprising a tie, an end flange on the said tie and adapted to be engaged by a rail, a clamping bar mounted to swing on the said tie and capable of'being moved into clamping engagement with the said rail and means engagingthe said'tie and the said clamping bar for retaining the said clamping barin clamping engagement with the said rail.
