Description

N.PETRs. PHOTULITHQGRAPHER, WASHINGTON. D C. 1
tnittd gisten osuna o. woonnonr,
0F NEW YORK, N. Y.
Letters Patent No. 102,460, dated April 2'6, 1870.
`IMPROVEMENT IN BRUSHES.`
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OSCAR D. Woonnrur, of the city, county, and State of `)Few York, have invented a new and useful Improi'elnent in Brushes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of thc. same, reference heilig had to the accompanying drawings which i'orui part of thisf specitication.
This invention consists in securing the bunches of bristles within the holes formed for them in the back or stock of the brush, by means of a wire or wires passing spirally around and binding the bristles and forming thereon screw-threads which are screwed into the holes.
Referring to the accompanying drawings- Figure l represents a sectional view ot a brush having its bristles attached to the stock according to my invention.
Figure 2 represents a detached bunch of bristles, having the wire attached, but. not yetbent in its spiral forni around it `and Figures 3 and 4- represent detached bunches. of bristles, illustrating different ways in which the screwthreads may be formed.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding part-s in the several figures.
A-represents the back or stock of a brush constructed of wood or other suitable material, and having bored init the usual holes a for reception of the bristles.
The bristles are collected in bunches, B, of suitable size to fit the holes a., after being doubled in the usual way.
A wire, c, is passed through the loop formed by the doubling of the bristles B, as shown In tig. 2, and
responding female-threads in the l1ole,jor by tt'iug in similar threads already formed therein, will sec rely hohl the bunch of bristles to the stock.`
The two ends ot the wire c may be carried around 1 the bristles separately from each other, so as to formy double screw-threads, as shown in ii". 3, or they may= bc carried around it' side byside, as shown liu fig. 4'.
'lbe ends oi` said wire, bylneansl of their abrupt termination, or by being otherwise' suitably formed" for insuring their engagement with the sides or walls of the hole a, upon the backward turning of the bunch of bristles, serve to prevent the backward motion of the bristles, and thereby retain them in place after they have been screwed into the stock.
What is here claimed, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, iszjv A brush, constructed by binding the bristles with wire in a spiral manner, so as to form a screw to con` neet with the stock, by screwing them into suitable recesses therein, as shown and described.
NVitnesses OSCAR 1)..WOODBURY.
