To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, F RANK L. I-IARMON, of Beverly, in the county of Essex and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Skiving-VIachines, of which this is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to skiving machines and is shown as embodied in a machine of the type disclosed in United States Patent No. 726,285, granted to me on April 28, 1903.
One object of this invention is the provision in a machine of this class of a knife shaftactuated at a comparatively high speed and a train of gears connecting said knife shaft with the feed roll and adapted to actuate said roll at a reduced speed. This construction results in a very compact machine the driving mechanism of which being simple and of few parts is more reliable and less apt to get out of order than are those of machines hitherto commonly used.
Another object of this invention is the provision of a feed roll and a presser foot together with means whereby the relative position of said foot and roll with respect to the knife may be simultaneously varied. Any convenient means for accomplishing this result may be employed, and in the illustrated embodiment the presser foot and feed roll are carried by a support or guard plate which is longitudinally movable .to move said foot and roll simultaneously toward or from the edge of the knife. With this construction it is possible by a single adjustment to bring the feed roll, presser foot and knife into proper relative position to compensate for wear of the-knife, and
thus to avoid the several separate adjust-' ments which have been necessary heretofore.
Another object of this invention consists in the provision of a presser foot and a feed roll simultaneously adjustable with respect to the knife together with yielding means for supporting said foot or roll. With such a construction the angular inclination of said foot or roll determines the angle of the skive, and preferably means are provided whereby said inclination may be varied. In the frame 1 of the machine is journaled an uprightshaft 2 to the upper end of which is fastened a substantially diskshaped knife 5. A pulley 3 also fast to said shaft serves to provide means whereby said shaft and knife may be rotated by means of a belt (not shown) which passes around said pulley 8 and over two. guide pulleys 85, 35 fast to a horizontal shaft which is also j ournaled in the frame of the machine.
The knife, it will be noted, is fixed against movement other than rotation. In order, therefore, to vary the angle of the skive the feed roll is supported in the following manner:This feed roll 13 is fast to a shaft 11 (see Fig. 10) which is in turn rotatably mounted in the arms of a yoke 12. At the center of the base of this yoke there is formed a cylindrical extension 14 which is held in adjusted position in a corresponding bore in a rock shaft 15 by means of a set" order to support the yoke and with it the feed roll, two springs 19 are provided, one end of each spring being fastened to the top plate by means of a screw while the opposite end extends under an arm of the yoke 12. In order to adjust the angular position of the yoke when the set screw 18 has been loosened and to limit the upward movement of said yoke by opposing the action of the springs 19 two set screws 20 are threaded through the top plate or supporting member 1.7 and abut the upper faces of the arms of said yoke.
Upon the top plate 17 is mounted a presser foot 22 one end of said foot being fastened to the top plate by a screw. This presser foot is in the form of a stiff spring, and the elevation of its effective end is regulated by means of a screw 23 threaded through said top plate and abutting the presser foot. The strength of the presser foot is much greater than that of the combined strength of the springs 19 so that when work is fed to the machine the presser foot remains stationary while the feed roll yields, the presser foot being made of yielding material. merely in order that its effective end may be adjusted.
T he feeding mechanism just described is all carried by the top plate 17, and said top plate is adjustably secured to the frame 1 of the machine by means of a screw 21 which passes through a slot all in said top plate and is threaded into said frame. It is thus possible to adjust the top plate lon gitudinally in order to compensate for wear of the knife; and inasmuch as the presser foot, the feed roll and their associated parts are mounted upon the top plate the separate adjustment of said parts which would oth erwise be necessary in order to compensate for wear of the knife is avoided.
As shown best in Fig. 3 the top plate 17 is so constructed that it covers the knife with the exception of a small portion adjacent the feed roll. In effect, therefore, said plate besides supporting the feeding mechanism serves as a shield or guard to protect the operator and to prevent the skived leather from being injured by the knife. The feed roll 13 is driven at reduced speed from a worm 1 on the knife shaft through the gears (3, 8, 9 and 10. The gears (3 and 8 are fast to a shaft journaled in the frame 1; the gear 10 is fast to the feed roll shaft 11, and the gear 9 is intermediate between the gear 8 and the gear 10. It is clear that when the top plate is adjusted longitudinally the distance between the axes of the gears 8 and 10 will be changed, and consequently it is necessary to provide some means for adjusting the gear 9 to compensate for such change in distance. Accordingly a plate 26 Figs. 2 and fastened to the frame by a plurality of screws is provided; and in this plate is formed a slot 25 the center of curvature of which coincides with the center of the gear 8. Through this slot is placed the shank of a headed stud 21; upon this shank is placed a bearing sleeve 27 the length of which is greater than the distance from the plate to the end of the shank of said stud, and the diameter of which is greater than the width of the slot 25. Upon this sleeve is placed the gear 9, the width of which is slightly less than the length of said sleeve, and the screw 28 is screwed into a socket in the end of the stud 24L, thus clamping the bearing sleeve in adjusted position, the gear 9 being then free to rotate on said sleeve.
It should be not-iced that the slot in the plate 26 through which the feed roll shaft 11 extends is wide enough to permit a slight angular movement of said shaft. A con'lparatively slight movement is all that is required in practical use and such movement does not interfere with the mesh of the gears 9 and 10.
In order to sharpen the knife a bell crank lever 30, pivoted to the frame at 31 carries an emery wheel 32 and a pulley which are fasttogether and mounted on a pivot extending through a slot in one end of said lever so that the pivot may be adjusted along the slot when desired. An elastic belt 34 connects the pulley 33 with a pulley fast to the horizontal shaft which carries the pulleys 35, as shown in Fig. 3, it being evident that when the left hand end of said lever, as it appears in Fig. 1, is depressed, the emery wheel will be brought into contact with the knife as shown in dotted lines.
Inoperation the presser foot 22 is adjusted to the desired height by means of the screw 23 to determine the thickness of the skive. The set screw 18 is then loosened to permit the angle of the feed roll to be adjusted to the desired inclination by means of the screws 20, whereupon the set screw 18 is again tightened. Power is then applied to the pulley 3, and the work is fed to the machine. In case the knife becomes dull the lever 30 is manipulated to bring the emery wheel 33 into contact with the knife. lVhen the knife becomes worn sufficiently to render such adjustment necessary the axis of the gear 9 is first adjusted downwardly in the slot 25 and then the top plate is adjusted to restore the proper relation between the knife, presser foot and feed roll.
Although the invention has been set forth in. connection. with a particular machine it should be understood that said invention is not limited in the scope of its application to the particular machine shown and described.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. A machine of the class described, having in combination, a shaft, a knife fixed to the upper end thereof, a feed roll, means for rotating said knife shaft at comparatively high speed, and a train of gears connecting said knife-shaft with said feed roll whereby said roll is driven from said shaft at reduced speed.
2. A machine of the class described, having in combination, a shaft, a knife fixed to the upper end thereof, a feed roll, means for rotating said knife shaft at comparatively high'speed and a train of positively engaging gears connecting said knife shaft with said feed roll whereby said roll is driven from said shaft at reduced speed.
8. A machine of the class described, having in combination, a shaft, a knife fixed to said shaft, means for rotating said shaft, a feed roll, and a train of gears connecting said shaft and roll, whereby said roll is driven from said shaft, said gears being constructed and arranged to permit the distance of said roll from said shaft to be varied.
A machine of the class described, having in combination, a shaft, a knife fixed to the upper end thereof, means for rotating said shaft, a feed roll, a train of gears between said shaft and roll by which said roll is driven from said shaft, and means whereby one of said gears may be adjusted to permit relative bodily movement between said shaft and roll while maintaining the mesh of said gears.
5. A machine of the class described, having in combination, a shaft, a knife mounted upon the upper end thereof, a feed roll, means for actuating said knife and roll, a presser foot and means whereby the relative positions of said foot and roll with respect to said knife may be simultaneously varied.
6. A machine of the class described, having in combination, a shaft, a knife fast to the upper end thereof, a supporting member, a feed roll and a presser foot carried by said member, means whereby said member may be adjusted to move said presser foot and roll simultaneously toward and from said knife, and means for actuating said knife and roll.
7. A machine of the class described, having in combination, a shaft, a knife mounted uponthe upper end thereof, a feed roll, means for actuating said knife and roll, a presser foot, means whereby the position of said roll and presser foot may be simultaneously varied with respect to said knife and means for yieldably supporting said roll.
8. A machine of the class described, having in combination, a shaft, a knife mounted upon the upper end thereof, a feed roll,
means for actuating said knife and roll, a
presser foot, means whereby the position of said roll and presser foot may be simultaneously varied with respect to said knife, means for yieldably supporting said roll, and means whereby the angular position of said yieldable member may be adjusted independently of said foot.
9. A machine of the class described, having in combination, a shaft, a knife fixed to the upper end thereof, means for rotating said shaft, means for feeding stock to said knife, a combined guard plate and supporting member for guarding the edge of said knife and supporting said feeding means, and means whereby said combined plate and member may be adjusted.
10. A machine of the class described, having in combination, a supporting member, a feed roll yieldably supported thereby, a presser foot also supported by said member, a knife, means for actuating said knife and roll, and means whereby said supporting member may be adjusted to compensate for Wear of said knife.
11. A machine of the class described, having in combination, a supporting member, a feed roll yieldably supported thereby, said roll being angularly adjustable, a presser foot also supported by said member, a knife, means for actuating said knife and roll and means whereby said supporting member may be adjusted.
12. A machine of the class described, having in combination, a shaft, a knife mounted thereon, means for rotatingsaid shaft, a feed roll yieldably supported and a train of gears connecting said knife shaft with said roll whereby the feed roll is driven from the knife shaft.
13. A machine of the class described, having in combination, a shaft, a knife mounted at the upper end thereof for skiving stock, a rigid presser foot, a yielding feed roll, means whereby the angular position of said roll may be varied to vary the angle of the skive produced upon said stock, means for simultaneously adjusting the presser foot and feed roll toward and from the knife and means for actuating said knife and roll.
14. A machine of the class described having, in combination, a rotary shaft, a knife fixed to the upper end thereof, an adjustable table for supporting stock, said table being adjustable toward and from the knife in the plane thereof, a roll for feeding the stock, bearings for said roll carried by said table and means for driving said roll.
