To all whom it may concer/n:
Re it known that l, VJALTER W. GUY, a resident et Chicago, in the county of Cool; and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fireplaces, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
rThe invention relates to tire-places and more particularly to the mechanism Afor controlling` the damper to regulate the draft in the throat of the lire-placeln mechanism for operating dampers for lire-places, it has been fcunddesirahle in'- practice to have the mechanism disposed in the throat et the tire-place -where it `vill he accessible for disconnect-ion from' the damper in event it becomes necessary to remove the damper for access to the chimney flue, or in cleaning the fire-place. iVhen the damper operating mechanism is aceessihly disposed in the throat of the fireplace, it is desirable that it should be of suchconstruction that its operation will not be affected hy the smoke or heat passing through the throat and it is also desirable that this operating mechanism should he operable by a handle atthe front. of the tire-place, so that in order to adjust the damper, it will not be ecessary to reach up into the throat of the lire-place to adjust the damper. rhe invention designs to provide improved (lampe-roperaliue' mechanism which may be oper ated hy a handle at the 'front thereof, which may he aeccssihly disposed in the throat of the fireplace, so thatdisconnection may he made which permits the damper to he removed, and which will not be rendered inoperative hy the heat and smoke passing through the throat of the lire-place, and which avoids cutting away the walls around the fireplace 'for connection to the damper.

'l`he lire-place comprises a floor 7, a backwall 8, sidewalls 6, an arch-wall 9, a chimney-tlue and a metallic dome 1l set into and supported hy the hack-wall and sidewalls ol the lire-place, as well understood in the art, the arch-wall being laid on the lintel 12 of the dome. The rear Wall 13 of the dome slopes downwardly from the top or peak and has an opening 14 therein. A damper 15, pivotally mounted as at 16, in lugs 1T on the dome, is adapted to close the ope-ning and to 'regulate the draft of the tire-place, as well understood in the artt..
In practice, it occurs that soot accumulates in the space in back of the damper and for the purpose of facilitating the re# moral of the soot from this place, the damper is usually constructed, so that it may be removed from the dome, the pivots 16 on the damper being held in openslots 17a in the pivot-lugs 17 on the dome. The mechanism for adjusting the damper into different positions to close the opening 14 or to reofulate vthe draft, comprises a shaft 18, Which is jonrnaled at its rear end in the back-Wall i3 f ot' the dome and at its front end in a bracket 19 secured to the lintel of the dome, thel shaft extending transversely across the throat of the fire-place, throughV the lower.

in practice, it has' been found that heat and smoke sometimes cause the parts to become warped or covered with soot, so that if they are 4accurately fitted together, theywo'uld become inoperative as a result. Having thus described the invention, what l claim as new and desire to secure hy Letters Patent, is:
l. In a vtire-place, the combination ot a dome, a damper niovaloly mounted in the dome and mechanism for adjusting the damper comprising a handle at the front of the fireplace, a screw operated hy the han die, a runner longitudinally movable onthe screw, a pivot at each side of the runner, and a link connection between the damper and the runner comprising members pivoted to the damper and connected to the oppositely disposed pivots on the runner respectively. 2. .ln a fire-place, the combination of a `dome,'a damper niovably mounted in the deine and 1 mechanism for adjust-ing the damper comprising a handle at the liront ci the fireplace, a transversely extending, shaft to which the handle is secured, a sleeve re inovably niounted on the shaft and having' a screw thereon, a pin extending through th lsleeve and the shaft for removably securing' 'the shaft and sleeve together, a runner on the screw and a link-connection l etween the runner and the damper.
