To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WVILLIAM A. Meyer, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dust-Catching Attachments for Brooms, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to means for preventing the flying of dust in house sweeping operations, and has for its object to provide a simple and eflicient attachment for ordlnary brooms and the like, whereby the dust raised in the ordinary movement of the broom is caught as it leaves the broom and is eflectively held from flying into the room in a cloud, all as will hereinafter more fully appear.

In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1, is a perspective view of the present appliance. Fig. 2, is a detail plan view of the attaching clamp. Fig. 3, is a detail vertical section of the dust catching member on line w, Fig. 1.

Similar numerals of reference indicate like parts in the diiferent views.

Referring to the drawings, 1 represents the broom or like hand operated sweeping device, and 2 a clamp band or collar fixedly secured to said broom, at any suitable point, by means of a clamping bolt 3 passing through cars at the adjacent ends of a gap formed in said band or collar, as shown.

4 is the dust catching member of the present invention, and which has a width approximating the greater width of the broom l, and is preferably formed .of a curved plate of metal as shown. Said member is also preferably provided at its lower end with a transversely extending trough or receiver 5, for the purpose hereinafter stated, and with a downturned lip or flange 6 at the free edge of the bottom of said trough for the purpose of deflecting the dust and sweepings in an upward direction against the dust catching means hereinafter described.

7 is an intermediate connecting member which in the preferred form of the present invention is rigidly connected to the aforesaid dust catcher member 4, at one end, and

at the other end to the clamp collar 2 in a pivotal manner; while any suitable pivotal means may be employed, the construction shown in the drawing is preferred, and comprises a pair of rod members having sepa rated relation and constituting the aforesaid intermediate connecting member 7. At one end said rods are fixedly attached to the dust catcher member 4, while their other ends are formed with bent portions 8, that project toward each other and are adapted to be sprung into orifices formed in the clamp band or collar 2, as illustrated in Fig. 2, to constitute the required pivotal connection.

9 are casters secured in any usual manner to the lower portion of the dust catcher member 4, to support the same upon the floor or carpet in a manner which will permit of the ready movement of the appliance in the sweeping operation.

10, is a filling or layer or sponge or other equivalent absorbent material arranged on the side of the dust catcher member 4, next adjacent to the broom 1. In actual use said absorbent filling or layer is saturated with water, to enable the same to eflectively catch and hold the dust and sweepings discharged against the same by the broom in an ordinary sweeping operation of the same.

WVhere a sponge is used as the absorbent filling 10 aforesaid, the same will be 0011- veniently held in place by end walls 11 on the member 4; and transverse confining bars 12 secured to the free ends of said end walls as shown, and with the lower edge of the sponge extending into the trough or receiver 5, which is adapted to receive and retain any water flowing away from said sponge.

In the practical operation of the present invention, the ordinary manipulation of the broom will be preferred, except that the sweeping will be effected wholly in the direction of the present appliance as carried by the broom in its various movements.
