Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LOUIS G. SoHwEINE- BRATEN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at 1118 Avenue F, Birmingham, in the county of Jefferson and State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Portable Crank-Pin Turners, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to turning machines, and the principal object of the same is to provide a portable turning machine that is especially adapted for turning crank pins and which may be connected to a source of power or manually operated.
In carrying out the objects of the invention generally stated above it will be understood, of course, that the essential features thereof are necessarily susceptible of changes in details and structural arrangements, one
which is shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a view in end elevation of the rear end of the improved portable turning machine. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view taken on the line 22, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary view in front elevation of the tool carrier head. Fig. 4: is a sectional view taken on the line 44, Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a detail view of a tool carrier.
Referring to said accompanying drawings by numerals, 1 designates the base from one end of which the supporting post 2 projects at right angles. Said post carries a tubular bearing sleeve 3 at its free end through which binding screws 1 project. Said sleeve is also provided with abutment lugs 5 on its outer surface for a purpose to be explained. Adjacent the junction of post 2 with base 1, a transverse bearing opening 6 is formed through said post which alines with a similar opening 7 formed through a short post 8 that projects at right angles from base 1. A shaft 9 is rotatably mounted in said openings 6 and 7, the end of the shaft that projects through post 8 being threaded for the reception of a nut 10. Said shaft projects beyond post 2 and is provided with a collar 11 between which and post 2 a fiber washer 12 is interposed. Said projected portion of shaft 9 has its free end suitably shaped to adapt the same for connection with a motor or for a handle for manual rotating of said shaft. Between posts 2 and 8, a small gear 13 is keyed or otherwise suitably fastened on shaft 9.
A horizontally arranged sleeve 14 has its reduced solid end portion 15 mounted in the bearing sleeve 3 and is rigidly but detachably fastened therein by the binding screws 4. Said solid portion 15 has a reduced threaded extension 16 from which a nut-shaped lug 17 projects. Sleeve 1A has its other end provided with an annular flange 18 provided with a flaring opening 19 which communicates with a threaded opening 20 formed longitudinally in sleeve 14, said threaded opening 20, in turn, communicating with a reduced and elongated longitudinal opening 21 that terminates adjacent the junction of sleeve 14: and the solid portion 15 thereof.
A bushing 22 rotatably surrounds sleeve 14, the rear thereof being provided with a gear 23 that meshes with gear 13 of shaft 9. The forward end of said bushing is provided with a seat 24 for a bearing washer 25, preferably of fiber which is interposed between said bushing and the flanged end of sleeve 14. Said forward end of the bushing 22 has a tool carrier head 26 keyed or otherwise rigidly fastened thereon and which is provided with a threaded opening 27 that alines with an opening 28 formed through gear 23. A feed shaft 29 has its threaded portion mounted in the opening 27 of head 26, the said shaft having its unthreaded portion mounted in the opening 28 of gear 23. Said shaft 29 projects beyond gear 23 and has a star wheel 30 rigidly but removably mounted thereon the hub 31 of which has a fiber washer 32 interposed between it and one surface of said gear. Said shaft 29 carries a collar 32 between which and the other surface of said gear a posed. Lugs 5 of bearing sleeve 3 are in the path of movement of star wheel 30 and rotate said wheel and thereby cause shaft 29 to automatically adjust head 26 longitudinally of sleeve 14. A fiber washer 34 is interposed between gear 23 and sleeve 3.
Lock nuts &2-43 are carried by the threaded extension 16 of sleeve let for clamping a fiber washer L4 to the outer end of bearing sleeve 3, which nuts obviously cooperate with screws 4 to lock sleeve 1& to bearing sleeve 3.
It will be seen from the foregoing that the improved machine may be readily placed in position to operate upon a crank pin, and that by means of shaft 9 and gear 13 23, bushing 22 is rotated about sleeve 21 which carries head 26 with it so that the tool carried by the carrier 37 will properly treat the crank pin. It will also be seen that through the lugs 5 and star wheel 80, feed shaft 29 automatically adjusts head 26.
hat I claim as my invention is A machine for turning crank pins consisting of a base having a vertical post with a bearing sleeve at its upper end, a horizontal fixed sleeve detachably mounted in said post and formed at its forward end with an annular flange having a flaring opening with a threaded socket at the rear thereof, and a reduced elongated opening communicating with said threaded socket, a bushing rotatably mounted on said sleeve and formed at its rear end with a gear wheel, a driving mechanism connected with said gear wheel, a cylindrical tool carrying head keyed to the forward end of said bushing and slidable thereon, a feed shaft projecting at one end through said head and connected at its other end to the gear wheel of the bushing, a star wheel mounted on the rear end of said feed shaft, a number of posts located at intervals apart on the upper end of the sleeve supporting post and adapted to engage said star wheel, and a tool holder arm mounted on said slidable ring shaped head on the bushing.
