To all whom 'it mayy concern;
Be it known that I, VVILLIAAI ELLIS, a citizen of the United States,` residing at Harrod, in the county of Allen and State ol Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Spark-Plugs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to spark plugs for internal combustion engines, and it has for its object to provide a simple and improved construction whereby the plug is provided with two separate and independent sparking devices, properly insulated 'from each other and so arranged that in the event of one of said devices being disabled, the sin ple adjustment of a switch will enable the other unit of the sparking device to be thrown into active operation so that the operation of the engine with which the device is associated may be continued without interruption, the instalment of a new sparkA ing device being postponed until a more convenient season.
With these and other ends in view which will readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the improved construction and novel arrangement and combinat-ion of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
yIn the accompanying drawing has been illustrated a simple and preferred form of the invention, it being, however, understood that no limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details therein exhibited, but that changes, alterations and modications within the scope of the claims may be resorted to when desired.
Inr the drawing-Figure 1 is a view in elevation of the improved spark plug. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the switch used in connection therewith.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like characters of reference.
The casing 1 of the improved spark plug is externally threaded at 2 for engagement with the engine head3, and said casing is provided with a wrench seat 4 to enable it to be conveniently adjusted and tightened.
The u )er or outer end of the casin lconstitutes a packing box for the reception of packing 5 which is retained by means of a gland 6 oi ordinary construction. The lower end of the shell or casing 1 is provided with inwardly extending prongs 7, 7 constituting electrodes.
The shell contains an insulating plug 8 of porcelain or other suitable material, said plug being provided with a downwardly extending web 9 and with electrodes l0, 10 extending longitudinally therethrough, said electrodes terminating adjacent to t-he prongs 7, 7 The upper extremities of the electrodes are provided with U-shaped brackets ll, 11 adapted to be engaged by a switch lever 12 which is connected by an insulating block 13 of porcelain or other suit-able material with a resilient supporting member 14, the latter being bolted. or otherwise secured upon the head of the engine. The switch lever 12 has a handle 15 whereby it may be conveniently manipulated and is provided with a binding post 16 for connection with the timer wire 17 whereby connection is made with themagneto, battery or other electrical connection in any customary and well known manner.
It will be observed that the spark gap between the prong 7 and the electrode l0 is entirely separated from the spark gap between t-he electrode 7 and the prong l0 by the web 9, so that the sparking of the one set of electrodes will not injuriously altect the other set.
In the operation of this device, if the electrodes at one side of the device should be burned out or refuse to act, the simple switching of the lever 12 to the opposite bracket 1l or 11, as the case may be, will cut the first electrode from and include the second electrode in the circuit, thus restoring the device to operativeness.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is

In a spark plug, a shell having a plurality of inturned prongs at its lower end, and an insulating plug in the shell having a downwardly extending web forming a partition between the prongs, electrodes extending through the plug, said electrodes terminating at vopposite sides of the web, each electrode adapted to spark to one of the inturned prongs, and each electrode having switch engaging means at its upper end, and a resiliently'supported switch lever to alter- -nately engage the switch engaging means of the several electrodes.
2. In a spark plug, a shell having prongs at its lower end, an insulating plug having a downwardly extending Web forming a partition between the prongs, electrodes eX- tending through the plug at opposite sides of the Web and terminating adjacentto the prongs, each of' said electrodes being provided with switch engaging means at its upper end, av resilient supporting member, ay switch lever, an insulating block connecting t-he switch lever with the supporting 10 member, said lever being adapted for alternate engagement with the electrodes, and a binding post and a handle uponthe switch lever.
