1' STAS TNT JESSE CHILDS, O'F RUSSELLT'ON, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JOHN MGHARG, 0F HARMARVILLE, PENNSYLVANIA.
SIFTER AND SEPARATOR.
T 0 all whom it may concern.'.
Be it known that I, Jnssn CHILns, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Russellton, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sifters and Separators, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to a sifter and separator for granular matter, and the primary object of my invention is to provide a sifter and separator that can be advantageously used for sifting, screening and separating grades of coal.
Another object of the invention is to provide a sifting and separating machine that can be easily and quickly operated to move coal upon a platform or suitable support, whereby slag and other inferior matter can be removed from the same as the coal is screened.
A further object of the invention is to furnish a sifter and separator with a rotary conveyer for expeditiously handling coal as the same is fed to the machine.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a machine of the above type that can be advantageously used in coal yards for classifying grades of coal received direct from the mines.
A still further object of the invention is to accomplish the above results by a machine that is simple in construction, easy to operate, capable of withstanding the rough usage to which it is subjected, and highly efficient for the purposes for which it is intended.
These and such other objects as may hereinafter appear are attained by the novel combination of parts to be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed.
Reference will now be had to the drawings, wherein like numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, in which Figure 1 is a cross sectional view of the machine, Fig. 2 is a plan of a portion of the machine, Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the machine partly broken away and partly in section, Fig. i is a perspective View of a conveyer arm, and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a detached lid or cover attached to some part of the machine.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 25, 1911.
Patented Apr. 23, 1912. Serial No. 623,147.
A machine in accordance with this invention comprises a circular platform or table 1 supported by a plurality of legs 2. Mounted upon the table 1 are circular angle bars 3 providing a circular trough 1. The inner angle bar supports a central circular plate 5 having a central opening 6 registering with a vertical socket 7 in a bearing 8 mounted centrally of the table 1.
The table 1 has a main discharge opening 9 and auxiliary discharge openings 10 and 11, the latter being diametrically opposed and the former intermediate the latter, all of said openings being in communication with the trough 1. In the main opening 9 is arranged a sleeve 12 and over the auxiliary openings 10 and 11 are arranged grates or bars 13, the grate of the auxiliary opening 10 being coarser than the grate of the auxiliary opening 11. Arranged beneath the table 1 are inclined chutes 14 and 15 in communication with the auxiliary openings 10 and 11 respectively. Another chute 16 is arranged below the main discharge opening 9.
The table 1 is provided with a superimposed transverse frame 17 and journaled in said frame is a vertical shaft 18 having the lower end thereof extending through the opening 6 into the socket 7 of the bearing 8. The upper end of the shaft 18 has a beveled gear wheel 19 meshing with a similar wheel 20 mounted upon a shaft 21, journaled in bearings 22, carried by the frame 17. The outer end of the shaft 21 is provided with a stepped pulley 23 for an enclless belt 24 arranged upon another stepped pulley 25 carried by a driven shaft 26. The shaft 26 can be driven by any suitable source of power and the elements 19 to 25 inclusive, are simply one manner of transmitting power to the vertical shaft 18, for instance, an electric motor can be located upon the frame 17 to drive the shaft 21.
Keyed or otherwise mounted upon the shaft 18 above the circular plate 5 is a hub 27 and connected to said hub, as at 28 are a plurality of radially disposed arms 29, said arms having the outer ends thereof provided with detachable blades 30. Connected to said arms adjacent to said blades is a circular bearing ring 31 adapted to rest upon the circular plate 5. The elements 27 to 31 inclusive constitute a rotary conveyer, the blades 30 extending into the trough for moving matter deposited therein. Arranged above the trough adjacent to the main opening 9 is a chute 32 and the lower end of said chute has a curved deflector 33 for deflecting matter from the main opening 9. hen it is desired to close either one of the openings 10 or 11, a curved lid or plate 34 can be placed over said openings. The use of the plate 34 is desirable when slag or other foreign matter is to be removed from the coal shifted in the trough 4:.
From the foregoing it will be observed that I have devised a machine having a circumferentially arranged trough in which coal is moved by a rotary conveyer, the conveyer moving and sifting the coal whereby different grades thereof will pass through the grates 13 into the chutes 14L and 15, while the very coarse coal Will be carried to the main opening 9 and deposited in the chute 16.
That I claim is :e
A machine for the purpose set forth,
comprising a circular table having a pair of diametrically opposed openings and further having an opening equally spaced between the openings of said pair, a pair of vertically disposed circular members arranged one Within the other upon said table and forming a trough communicating with said openings, a bearing positioned oen trally of said inner member, a circular plate supported upon said bearing and 'said inner member, a shaft extending in said bearing, a hub keyed to the shaft and mounted upon said plate, radially disposed arms fixed at their inner ends to said hubs and having their outer ends projecting over said trough, a circular bearing ring mounted upon the perimeter of said plate and connected to the outer portions of said arm and moving the said hub, rectangular plates carried by the said arms and depending into said trough, a set of parallel space bars arranged near each of the openings of said pair of openings and each set constituting a screen, chutes communicating with each of said openings, and means for rotating said shaft, thereby shifting the plates through the trough.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
