Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN E. D. STAFFORD, of Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nut-Locks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and
exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in nut locks designed particularly for looking nuts to a wood backing, and it consists in certain details of construction and combinations of parts as will be more fully described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view of one form of my improved lock. Fig. 2 is a side view of same. Fig. 3 is a view in elevation of a modified form and Fig. 4 is a side view of the latter.
1 represents a disk of metal the major part of which is circular in form, while the remaining part is in the form of three inverted V-shaped members 2 and 3. The central V-shaped member or tongue 2 is larger than the side members 3, and is adapted to be bent outwardly over the nut for locking the latter against turning movement, while the smaller V-shaped members 3, are pointed and bent at right angles rearwardly or inwardly, and constitute holding prongs which embed themselves in the wood backing and prevent the plate from turning.
Located adjacent to the bolt hole 4; are a series of protuberances 5 which project slightly out from the outer face of the plate and have rounded edges to permit the nut to be freely turned, but which, by their elasticity, bear with suflicient frictional contact to prevent the nut from accidentally turning, thereby permitting the nut to be turned when under tension to a position where one of its flat faces will accurately register with the tongue 2 when the latter is bent down thereon.
In Figs. 1 and 2 the prongs 3 are located on opposite sides of and at the base of the tongue.
In the construction shown in Figs. 3 and 4: the tongue 2 is formed at one edge of the plate, which in these figures is shown square, and the prongs 3 at the opposite edge, the prongs being bent up from the side edges rather than from the bottom edge, so as to present fiat triangular faces which when embedded will prevent the disk or plate from turning.
It is evident that many slight changes mlght be resorted to in the relative arrangement of parts shown and described without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention hence I would have it understood that I do not wish to confine myself to the exact construct-ion shown and described, but,
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Lettors-Patent, is
1. A nut lock comprising a metal disk having a bolt hole therein, a series of yielding protuberances having rounded edges which latter are substantially radial t o-the bolt opening, and projecting from the front face of the disk adjacent to the bolt opening therein, integral prongs for engaging a part to prevent the disk from turning and an integral nut holding tongue adapted to be turned to engage a face of the nut.
2. A nut lock comprising a metal disk having a bolt hole therein, a series of integral yielding protuberances having rounded edges which latter are substantially radial to the bolt opening, and projecting from the front face of the disk adjacent the bolt opening therein, an integral nut holding tongue adapted to be turned to engage the nut and integral prongs, the latter being located on opposite sides of the center of the nut holding tongue and adapted to engage a wood backing.
3. A nut lock embodying a disk having a bolt opening therein and having a portion thereof constituting a locking tongue adapted to extend in parallelism with respect to the side of a nut to lock the nut from turning and further having a plurality of protuberances having rounded edges, which latter are substantially radial to the bolt opening, said protuberances constituting a compressible means adapted to be compressed when a nut is screwed home for the positioning of one side of the nut opposite the inner face of said locking tongue.

A nut lock embodying a washer having a portion thereof constituting a locking wing adapted to extend in parallelism with respect to the side of a nut to lock the nut from turning and further provided on one face in proximity to the edge of the opening for the bolt, with a plurality of protuberances rounded at their edges, which latter are substantially radial to the bolt opening,
