GLENN GARDEN, OF PHOENIX, ALABAMA.
TRACK-LIF'IING- JACK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 1, 1911.
Patented Apr. 23, 1912. Serial No. 611,638.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GLENN GARDEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Phoenix, in the county of Lee and State of Alabama, have invented new and useful Improvements in Track-Lifting Jacks, of which the following is a specification, it being understood that various changes in the construction may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof.
My invention relates principally to lifting jacks for lifting and repairing rail road tracks, but it may be used for various other purposes, and its main object is to provide a lifting jack that will lift either rail singularly, or both rails together.
I attain this and other objects by the mechanism shown in the accompanying drawing in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation; Fig. 2 is an end elevation partly broken away to show the interior mechanism.
In the drawings 1 is a base of sufficient length, breadth and thickness, to give the device a firm foundation.
2 is a hollow column of such construction as will allow an upward and downward movement of the toothed member 3, the said toothed member 3 is raised and lowered by means of the lever 4, and is held in position by means of a pawl or ratchet 5. The said toothed member 3 also carries at its top end a beam 6, which is secured in a manner that will allow each end to be moved in a vertical plane, to form any necessary angle with the said toothed member 3. The said beam 6 is provided, at each end, with suspended swinging members 7, to which is attached hooks or lifting members 8, the said beam 6 is further provided with swinging members 9, adapted to engage either of the lugs 10 on the hollow column 2. The swinging members 9 are for the purpose of holding down either end of the beam 6, while the opposite end is raised or lowered by the lever 4, and are only used when it is desired to lift a single rail, if both rails are to be lifted simultaneously, both swinging members 9 are disengaged from the lugs 10, on the hollow column 2. 11 are braces secured to the base 1 and the hollow column 2.
To operate this device it is placed between the rails 12, of the track and the hooked ends of the lifting members 8, are placed under the said rails, then the lever 4 is operated in a vertical plane until thesaid rails are raised to the desired height, where they are held by the pawl or ratchet 5. If it is desired to raise only one rail the lifting members 8, on the opposite end are left free, and the swinging member 9 on that end is engaged by one of the lugs 10, which holds the end of the beam 6 down, while the other end is raised by the vertical movement of the lever 4.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The herein described track lifting jack, comprising a base, a hollow column rising from the base and provided on opposite sides thereof with perforated ears, a toothed slide mounted within the hollow column for vertical movement, a lever pivoted upon the column and provided with a nose for engaging the toothed slide, a pawl engaging the toothedv slide to prevent backward movement thereof, a beam carried by the slide, braces detachably connecting opposite ends of the beam to the ears, and track engaging members pendent from opposite ends of the beam, substantially as described.
GLENN GARDEN.
