To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, CHRISTIAN L. CHES- 2mn, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Monessen, in the county of Westmoreland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful "Improvements in Torches, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to torches for painters use and has for its object to provide a device of such class in a manner as hereinafter set forth which will allow of the painter manipulating the device with one hand during the scraping of the paint from woodwork or other objects.
Although the device is designed primarily for the use of painters, yet it can also be employed by plumbers and tinsmiths for heating and soldering when occasion so requires.
Further objects of the invention are to provide a torch for painters use which shall be comparatively simple in its construction land arrangement, strong, durable, ethcient in its use, provided with means for coupling a scraping or soldering iron thereto in proximity to a burner, conveniently operated, and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter more specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein is shown the referred embodiment of the invention, but 1t is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to which come within the scope of the claim hereunto appended.
In describing the invention in detail, reference is had to the accompanying drawings wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several views and in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation partly in section of a torch in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view thereof partly in elevation. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view, and, Fig. 4 is a sectional detail illustrating the tool-holder.
Referring to the drawings in detail, 1 denotes a cylindrical receptacle provided at one end with a cap piece 1a and at its other end with a cup-shaped bottom 1b provided Specification of Letters Patent.

with a filling opening 1c surrounded by a mouth piece 1d. The opening 1c is closed by a removable plug 2 provided with a handle 2a. The opening 1c permits of the receptacle l which constitutes the body-portion of the device being filled with gasolene or any suitable hydrocarbon.V
Connected to the cap piece 12L at the perimeter thereof is an upright tool-holder 3 foil positioning a tool in proximity to a burner 9. The tool holder 3 is hollow for the reception of the shank of the tool and extending through the tool holder 3 and engaging the shank of the tool is a set screw 3a whereby the tool is iiXedly secured in the tool holder. In Fig 4, the tool is illustrated as a soldering iron 4 provided with a shank 4a and in Figs. 1 and 2 the tool is shown as a scraping iron 5 provided with a shank 5a.
Extending through the cap piece l2l into the body-portion l is a feed pipe 6. That portion of the pipe 6 which is arranged within the body-portion 1 is enlarged as at 7 and is reduced at its lower end to provide a goose neck 8 having an inlet opening 8a. Mounted upon the pipe 6 eXteriorly of the body-portion 1 is an elbow 6a to which is att-ached a coupling 6b for connecting the burner 9 with the pipe 6. The burner 9 is provided with a regulating valve 10.
Connected to the elements 1a and lb by the coupling members 10a is a pump formed of a cylinder 11 closed by cap pieces 10b, l()c which are formed integral with the couplings 10a. Within the cylinder 11 operates a piston 11a which is connected to a piston rod 11b projecting from the lower end of the cylinder 11 and provided with a hand grip 112. The cylinder 11 communicates with the upper part of the body-portion 1 by a pipe 12 which opens into the cylinder 11 through the cap piece 10C and opens into the upper partof the body-portion 1 through the cap piece 1al and upper end of the body-portion l. The pump is used for forcing air into the upper end of the body-portion l so as to place hydrocarbon contained in the bodyportion 1 under pressure.
The function of the goose neck 8 is to allow practically the entire amount of gasolene to be removed from the receptacle 1. When the torch is used, it is held in an inclined position, that is, at an acute angle to a vertical piece of Work. Under such conditions, the gasolene will be held at the lower end of the receptacle near the end of the goose neck and practically the entire amount of gasolene will be utilized.
The function of the enlargement 7 within the receptacle l is to hold approximately one-third of the gasolene Within the torch, and when the torch is used in an inverted position, this one-third volume of gasolene is sufficient to supply the torch for a short period during `its inverted use. If there was only a small quantity of gasolene within the pipe 6, the torch would soon be eX- tinguished.
When the torch is to be placed in operation, the pump is actuated to force enough of the contents oi the casing l through the tube 7 into the burner, the valve 10 is then regulated whereby oil will properly burn to produce a flame at the scraper 5. The flame melts the paint upon the surface and the scraper 5 follows in the path of the Haine and removes the paint.
What I claim is:
A torch comprising a body portion for containing a hydrocarbon, a pipe arranged within and projecting from said body portion and having that part within the body portion enlarged and terminating in a goose neck said enlarged part of said pipeholding a supply of hydrocarbon to permit of the operation of the device when it is inverted, said goose neck provided with an inlet, a regulatable burner connected to the upper portion of said pipe, a tool holder for positioning a tool relative to the burner, and an air pump carried by said body portion and opening into the upper end thereof.
