ADJUSTABLE VALVE FOR DUST-COLLECTORS.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, PHILIP C. MILLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Valves for Dust-Collectors, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to that class of dust collectors of the cyclone type, and has for its object to provide adjustable means for regulating the size of the outlet. These machines are generally designed so that the area of the outlet is three times the area of the inlet pipe but it is not always true in practice that fans of a given size are run at a certain speed, and it is frequently the case that it is desirable to have the blow downward through the dust discharge orifice instead of drawing up on it. In these circumstances it is usual to send a man who will attach permanently to the top of the dust collector an annular ring which is riveted to the top of the dust collector and serves to decrease the size of the purified air exit. WVhile this serves the purpose, when it is desired to use the machine without the blow downwardly through the dust discharge the machine cannot be used except the ring is detached.
My invention has for its object to provide an adjustable valve to be located in the tubular guard whereby the operator may adjust or regulate the size of the purified air exit at will, the valve being so designed as to prevent the interfering with the efficiency of the machine even when the outlet is most restricted, that is to sayfor example, the regular outlet on a ten inch machine is eighteen inches in diameter but this can be reduced to twelve inches or about one and one-half times the area of the inlet pipe before interfering with the efiiciency of the machine.
My invention is designed to provide for a valve, which when fully closed will not reduce the area of the air exit to more than about one and one-half times the area of the inlet pipe.
My means of accomplishing the foregoing may be more readily understood by having reference to the accompanying drawings, which are hereunto annexed, and are a part of this specification, in which,
Figure 1 shows my valve attached to a cyclone type of dust collector having a restricted air outlet. Fig. 2 is a top or plan view of the same. Fig. 3 shows my improved adjustable valve applied to a type of dust collector in which the air exit is not restricted. Fig, 4: is a top or plan view of the same. Fig. 5 is a detail view of the tubular guard having a modified form of adjustable valve therein.

In the drawings the dust collector is provided with a downwardly tapering separating chamber 1 and a cylindrical portion 2 mounted thereon, a tangential inlet 3 for the entrance of the dust-laden air current, a tubular guard 4 leading to a restricted air exit 5 for the escape of the purified air, deflectors 6 being located within the tubular guard; a rod or tube 7 is located in the central portion of the tubular guard, the said rod being carried by braces 8 and 9 which extend across the top and bottom of the tubular guard 4:. Upon this rod or tube 7 is slidably mounted a disk 10 which may be provided with downwardly extending members 11 reaching to a collar 12 to prevent the valve from binding when its position is shifted. A chain 13 is attached to the disk 10 and extends upwardly therefrom passing over a pulley 14 across the top of the collector and through another pulley 15 whence it descends downwardly within reach of the operator.
The operation of the device is as follows: When it is desired to restrict the outlet, the operator pulls upon the chain and the disk sliding upwardly along the rod assumes the position indicated by the dotted lines, it being apparent that the higher it is drawn the more restricted the air outlet will be, while its size should be so proportioned that when it reaches the highest possible point on the rod 7 there will be left an escape for the purified air equal to about one and onehalf times the area of the inlet pipe. It may be found desirable in some instances to employ another form of valve such as is shown in Fig. 5, it being obvious that the same would be within the scope of my in vention, which is to provide a valve to restrict the outlet of the escape for the purified air which may be adjusted by the operator to any desired opening without interfering with the ellicienoy of the machine.
Having described my invention, What I regard as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a dust collector, having a purified air outlet in its head, a tubular guard depending from said outlet, deflectors secured to the inner wall thereof, a valve located within the tubular guard, the movement of said valve operating to restrict the area of the air outlet.
2. In a dust collector, having a restricted purified air outlet in its head, a tapering tubular guard depending from said outlet, deflectors secured to the inner Wall thereof, a valve located within the tubular guard, the movement of said valve operating to restrict the area of the air outlet.
3. The combination with a dust collector, having a restricted purified air outlet, of a tubular guard depending therefrom, deflectors on the walls of said tubular guard,
a rod, braces carrying said rod, a disk mounted and slidable upon said rod, means to permit the operator to regulate the position of said disk, for the purpose set forth substantially as described.

The combination with a dust collector, having a restricted purified air outlet, and a tubular guard depending therefrom, of adjustable means located Within the tubular guard to vary the unobstructed area of said purified air outlet, means consisting of a rod, braces carrying said rod, a disk mounted and slidable upon the said rod, means to permit the operator to regulate the position of said disk, for the purpose set forth substantially as described.
