To all 'whom t may concern.' Be it known that I, LAWRENCE T. VAsH- ING'roN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mount Rainier, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Rortable-ncandescent-Lamp Handles; and I do hereby declare the lfollowingto he a full, clear, and exact description of .the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to niakeand use the saine.

This invention relates to handles for'that class of portable incandescent lamps coininonly known as trouble lamps, and has for an object to provide a handle that will be extremely durable and may be subjected to all conditions of weather and service witln out danger of short circuiting, and may furthermore be subjected to hard usage without'loss of eiiieiency.

A -further object of the invention is to provide a portable inca-ndescentl-alnp handle that. may be easily disassembled for repairs land furthermore will be composed of a few simple and inexpensive parts that will not easily get out of order.

TVith the above objects in View the inve-ntion consists ot' certain novel. details of con- -struction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, it being understood that various modifications may be inadc in the ininor details of construction withinthe scope of the appended claim.

In the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification Fignre l is a longitudinal sectional' View through the handle. Fig. 2 is a side elevation ofthe device with the grip sleeve removed.

Referring now to the drawing in which like characters of reference designate similar parts, l() designates the outer shell of the socket, and 11 an integral nipple carried by thc shell, these parts being' preferably made of metal. The nipple is cut away on one side to about the central longitudinal axis to provide an opening 1Q, which exposes the terminals of the lamp. The nipple forms a handle tor manipulating thc lanlp, and ink thc'prcscnt instance is shown equipped with ainetal sleeve 13 which conceals the opening in the side of the nipple, and is detachably secured in position through the instrumen# tality ol` a set screw 14. Within the shell l0 is arranged a threadcd socket l5 iornicd of metal, and a sleeve it; ot' vulcanitc or similar insulating inaterial surrounds the socket and insulate's the same from the shell. Both the sleeve and 'socket are uniformly contracted to contorni to the inner contour of the inner end of the socket, and a plug l? of porcelain or lilqema terial is passed through the socltet and into the nipple il, the plug having a dish: head- 18 whiohts agains'tthe contracted inner end oi the socket. The plug is formed with a central opening which receives a bushing 19, the same having an annular head 20 which bears against the outer tace of the plug, and having a substantially iiat tongue 2l which forms means for anchoring the bushing within the plug` and the plug .vithin the socket, as will presently` be described. A screw 22 is threaded into the bushing, thisl screw forming the contrai pole of the socket.

The nipple l1 is contracted as shown at a 23 at the free end, and arranged within the nipple is a strip'ot' insulating material 24 which is substantially senii-circulzn` in cross section and is arranged with its iiat tace in registration with the opening 1PZ as clearly to the tongue.

lFrom the above description it will be seen that upon removal of the sleeve 13, the binding screws may he exposed when necessaryy and it will be noted that to prevent. short,i eireuiting through the opening a substantially seinieirenlar strip ot vuloanite 39 is arranged within the opening 'l2 so as to arch over the exposed terminals of the conductor wires as shown.

It will :turtherinorta be noted that there are but a few simple and strong parts used in the construction ot' the socket, and that these parts are so secured together by accessible set screws as to be readily disassembled for inspection or repairs.

Furthermore, by virtue oi. the socket shell being entirely et inetal, the device may be exposed to hard usage under various conditions of service without danger of short eircuiting or appreciable injury.
