To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OHN WV. KnMPr, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Goehner, in the county of Seward and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cores for Making Concrete Culverts; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying draw ings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in adjustable cores for making concrete culverts and it has for its object the provision of a simple, inexpensive and practical device of this character which is adapted to be readily adjusted to accommodate the webs of culverts of varying diameters.
To these ends and to such others as the invention may pertain, the same consists in the novel construction and in the peculiar arrangement, combination and adaptation of parts, all as will be more fully hereinafter described, shown in the accompanying drawings and then defined in the appended claims.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which with the numerals of reference placed thereon form a 'part of this specification, and in which drawings Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of a portion of a culvert with my adjustable core applied thereto. Fig. 2 is an end view. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of the invention, the adjustment being shown in dotted lines, and Fig. 4 is a detail view of one of the semi-circular expanding members. Fig. 5 is a detail view of a semi-spherical '45'.band. Fig. 6 is a detail View of a wedge member. Fig. 7 is a sectional view on line 7-7 of Fig. 3, and Fig. 8 is a detail perspective view of a part of the device.
Reference now being had to the details 250; of the drawings, 1 represents the web of a culvert the longitudinal edges of which overlap and are held together by means of bolts 1 passing through registering apertures, and 2, 2 the formers, designed to support and maintain the web in position. The
former 2 comprises two semi-circular members 3 and 4 which, at their longitudinal centers, arecut away to form recesses 55, 5
adapted to fit within grooves 6, 6 provided at points adjacent to the outer ends of the timbers 7, 7. The timbers 7 57 are pivotally connected at one end by means of pivotal plates or links 8, the ends of which are provided with pins extending through the upper and lower timbers respectively, as shown.
9 is a keeper, consisting of a strip of metal, the free ends of which are attached to the side walls of one of the timbers adjacent to the notched free ends thereof and seated Within a longitudinal recess formed within the upper and lower walls respectively of said timbers is a wedge 10, the said wedge being provided at a point near its rear end with an opening within which is sleeved a screw-threaded nut 11.
12 is a screw-threaded rod adapted to be passed through a suit-able opening 13 provided in the rear or pivotal ends of the timbers 7, 7 and extending through the channel formed between the two meeting surfaces of the timber, the screw-threaded free end of the rod being provided with a casting l7 sleeved within a recess formed in the rear portion of the wedge, the end of the rod being secured in its seat by a transverse pin 18.
14, 14 are semi-spherical bands or members adapted 'to be secured to the semicircular sections 3 and 4 by means of metallic keepers 15, 15 which are secured at their inner ends to the outer periphery of the semi-circular members and upon both sides thereof and at their outer ends riveted, bolted or otherwise secured to the outer faces of the said bands or members.
From the foregoing description, the operation and advantages claimed for the invention will be at once apparent. The outer ends of the timbers 3 and 4 are provided with semi-circular formers 14 and inserted within the web of the culvert. In case the rim of the circle formed by the semi-circular formers 3 and 4 is such as to Permit the use of the semi-circular sections without the additional outer rings or supplemental the locking key or rod 12, the turning of which will cause the screw threads upon its surface to engage the nut 11 and the latter is thus forced forward, separating the free ends of the timbers 7 7 and forcing the semi-circular sections carried thereby outwardly, as shown, the limit of said outward movement being provided by the keeper 9, thus affording a means of readily removing the device from the web of the culvert.
If the diameter of the culvert is greater than is provided for by the diameter of the circle formed by the two semi-circular members 3 and 4, the device is made to accommodate itself to a culvert of such greater diameter by the addition of the outward semi-circular members 14 to the periphery of the semi-circular members 3'and 4.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim to be new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is w 1. A form for use in making culverts, the same comprising, in combination with the web of a culvert, of timbers pivotally con nected at one of their ends andat their opposite ends carrying semi-circular disks or members, a wedge interposed between and longitudinally movable within grooves formed in the meeting faces of the timbers, and a key or rod for regulating the movement of the wedge to expand the said semicircular members outward, as shown and described and for the purpose specified.
2. In a device for forming cores of culverts, comprising a web, two timbers pivotally connected at one of their ends, their opposite end provided with a wedge adapted to be moved longitudinally within grooves formed in the meeting faces of the timbers, a key or rod extended longitudinally between the timbers, one end of said rod being connected with the wedge, to effect a longitudinal movement of the same,
semi-circular disks carried by the outer ends of the timbers and adapted to be moved laterally by the movement of the wedge, and supplemental former sections adapted to be connected with the outer periphery of the circle described by the semi-circular members carried by the timbers, substantially as shown and described and for the purpose specified.
