Lamp Burner.
Paented April 26, i870! N. PETERS. PHDTo-LlrMuGRAPHER, wAsMxNGTON. D c..
JAMES SQWTHERBY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.'
Leners PtehN0.1o2,342, daad April 26, 1870.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same To all whom it may concern .-1
Be it known that I, JAMES S. WETHERBY, of the city,.county, and State of New York, have invented certain novel and useful Improvements in the Gonst-ruction of Fluid-lamp Burners; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had tol the accompanying drawings, which are lettered to correspond with and form a part, of the specification.
To enablethe public'to understand the nature of my said invention, and to enable those who are skilled in the mechanic arts to construct the same,'I will describe it as follows, to wit:
Figure 1 is an exterior viewof my metallic cone A, which surrounds and protects the dame.
This conical cap is made of any suitable sheet metal, and covered with a mineral jacket, such as china, porcelain, or other similar coating, and is also provided with four standards or upright arms, 1 2 3 4, which are secured to the outer periphery of the base of the cone A for the purpose of holding the glass chimney in its place from the outer side, in lieu of having the standard on the inside of the chimney, as heretofore employed.
Figure 2 is a vertical section of fig. 1, showing the inner perforated cone P'I, which forms a part of the tube U of the wick-holder or tube B B, which is provided with a hook, H, at its lower end or base, that screws into the lamp.
Figure 3 is a perspective drawing of the wick-holder, B, and a section of its cuter tube C and hook H, which suspends the burner or wick-holder B upon the side of the lamp, Without takingy the wick VV out of the lamp during the process of filling the same.
By the construction of a double conical cap, A, having the inner cone P P perforated s o that a free upward current of cold air passes around the tube O of the wick-holder or burner B B, I am enabled to keep the lamp perfectly cool. Hence, it is less liable to explosion, and the conical cap A is lifted off of the lamp, while trimming the wick, without unscrewing the burner B from the lamp; and when it is required to replenish the lamp with kerosene, or other Huid, you simply unscrew the burner B and hook the hooked end H upon the edge of the throat of the'lamp, while the wick W is suspended in the same Vduring the op-` cheaply constructed of the coarser metals, (such as tinned iron,) ata small expense.
Hence, the novelty of my invention consists in the construction of a double cone, A, and PP, having a mineral covering of porcelain, china, or their equivalent, and being provided with any suitable number' of arms, 1 2 3 4, upon the outside of the chimney, and having the inner cone P I perforated, and so constructed as to constitute a part of the tube C that fits over the .wick-holder or burner B B, which is provided with a hook, H, for convenience, and a more safe arrangement while trimming and filling the lamp, which is kept perfectly cool by means of the conical air-Hue P P. Therefore What I claim as new and useful, and what I wish to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
The cone A, with porcelain or other earthen covering, and inner perforated conical jacket P P, provided with tube C to hold the wick-'holder or burner B, and standards or arms 1 2 3 4 on the outside of the chimney, and hook H, all arranged and operating in the manner and for the purpose set forth and shown in the accompanying drawings.
In testimony whereof I hereunto subscribe my name in the presence of two witnesses.
' JAS. S. WETHERBY.
