WINDER-SI-IAFT COLLAR.
Application filed June 3, 1911.
To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, GUY C. DEWEY, a c1t1- zen of the United States, residing at Carthage, in the county of Jefferson and State.
of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in VVinder-Shaft Collars; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in collars for winder shafts in paper making machinery and the object in view is to produce a device of this nature adapted to prevent the rolls from creeping on the rewinder shaft as the paper is taken from the reels.
The invention consists further of a simple and efiicient device of this nature designed as a substitute for the ordinary wooden co-llars and ropes which are generally employed for this purpose and which have proven dangerous, being the cause of serious accidents.
My invention is illustrated in the accom-' panying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a cross sectional view through a shaft showing my improved sectional collar as applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a cross sectional view through the pulley in a plane at right angles to that shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the sectional pulley as applied to the shaft, and Fig. 4c is a top plan View.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A and B designate the two complemental sections of the collar, each of which is semi-cylindrical in shape, and to each section a metallic plate D of similar shape is fastened, the intermediate port-ion of the sections A and B being of any suitable material, such as wood and to which the working parts of the apparatus are attached. The two sections are connected together by means of the hinge E and a latch F is fastened to the section A and has a resilient hooked end F adapted to automatically snap over and engage a pin F carried in the walls of a recess in the section B. The section B is provided with a concaved recess Gr having a lining G of Specification of Letters Patent.

leather, rubber or other suitable material which may have a frictional contact with the winder shaft L. The upper section is recessed away as at O and a yoke, designated by letter J, which has a semi-concaved portion J adapted to engage over the upper portion of the winder shaft, intermediate which and said yoke a lining I of leather, rubber or other suitable material, is interposed.
The yoke J has a threaded hole J 2 formed therein engaged by the threaded end of the eye bolt H which is pivotally mounted upon a pin 1W to which a cam lever Qis pivotally connected. Said eye bolt passes through an aperture in a plate 0 countersunken in a recess O in the section A and the cam lever is curved and adapted to seat in a recess 0 formed in the outer surface of the section A.
Threaded pins S are mounted in threaded openings in said yoke, one adjacent to either end, and bushings S are mounted one over each pin and over each bushing a coiled spring S is mounted, the inner end of each bearing against the yoke, while the outer end of the spring engages in a recess S formed in the section A.
In operation, the sections of the collar are opened and placed over the winder shaft, then the two'sections brought together and the spring fastening will automatically engage the pin F 2 and hold the parts securely against the shaft, the device being placed against the end of the roll of paper and, when in proper position, the cam lever O is pushed down in the position shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, thus causing the yoke to be pressed against the shaft P which will grip the same with suflicient force to prevent slipping, thereby producing a collar or guard against the paper roll which will prevent the latter from slipping endwise while being rewound.
By the provision of a collar as shown and described, the same may be applied to the shaft while the machine is in operation and running at speed and without any danger.
What I claim to be new is 1. A sectional collar for winder shafts, comprising two sets of semi-cylindrical plates, links pivotally connecting same, fillers between each set of plates, a yoke mounted in a chambered portion between one set of plates said yoke having end portions which are in alinement with each other and designed, when the sets of plates are in contact with each other, to rest against the filler between the other set of plates, an eye bolt fitted to the yoke, a cam lever pivoted to said bolt and designed to fulcrum against one of said fillers, as set forth.
2. A sectional collar for winder shafts, comprising two sets of semi-cylindrical -plates, links pivot-ally connecting same,
fillers between each set of plates, a yoke mounted in a chambered portion between one set of plates, said yoke having end portions which are in alinement with each other, and designed, when the sets of plates are in contact with each other, to rest against the filler between the other sets of plates, an eye bolt secured to the yoke, and movable through one of the fillers, a cam lever pivoted to said bolt and adapted to bear against the adjacent filler as the lever is swung outward, and springs interposed between the ends of the yoke and the filler which is between the plates having said chambered portion, as set forth.
3. A sectional collar for winder shafts, comprising two sets of semi-cylindrical plates hinged together, fillers between the sets of plates, a yoke mounted within a chambered portion between one set of said plates, said yoke having ends which are in alinement with each other and designed, when the two sets of plates are in contact with each other, to rest against the edge of the filler between the other set of plates, said yoke having threaded apertures therein, an eye bolt fitted in one of said apertures, and pins in the others, said bolt passing through an aperture in one of the fillers, a lever having a cam head pivoted to the eye bolt in a recess in one of the fillers, and designed, when swung on its pivot, to bear against the bottom of said recess, springs about said pins and bearing between the ends of the yoke and the recessed filler, as set forth.
