Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED BOHY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hocking, in the county of Monroe, State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pick-Handles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in devices for fastening picks to handles and the leading object of the invention is to provide a device whereby a pick handle may be rigidly secured to a pick and when desired quickly removed therefrom by operating a jam screw or nut.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in certain constructions, combinations and arrangements of parts, clearly described in the following specification and clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a detail side elevation of the preferred form of the device. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view thereof. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of one of the interlocking arms of the handle ferrule. Fig. 4 is a detail side elevation of a modified form of the device. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of another modified form. Fig. 6 is a side elevation of another modified form of the device.
Referring to the accompanying drawings 5 denotes a pick or like implement which is formed with transversely extending and longitudinally spaced recesses located near the inner edge 6 thereof. The recess of the pick 5 receives the rounded terminals 7 of the attaching arms 8 which are formed integral with the ferrule or sleeve 9, which ferrule or sleeve receives the pick handle 10, the pick handle being suitably wedged in the ordinary manner thereto.
The attaching arms 8 extend slightly outward of the ferrule or sleeve 9 and are beveled at 11 so as to provide a space for the movement of fingers, whereby the nut or head 12 may be manipulated. The head 12 is formed with transversely extending openings 13 to receive a pointed instrument and is formed with a conical end projection 14 which is adapted to snugly fit in a conical recess 15 formed in the pick 5 intermediate of the ends thereof and between its terminal receiving recesses. The head 12 is formed integral with a pin 16 which is in turn formed with a reduced threaded end or screw 17. The screw 17 is threaded into the nut 18 disposed inthe bottom of the recess 19 formed in the ferrule or sleeve 9.
The ferrule 9 is formed with a shoulder 9 against which the head 12 abuts when the screw is brought to its innermost position. Each of the terminal heads 7 of the arms 8 is formed with an enlarged end 7' which fits into a recess formed in one end of its pick recess, whereby the terminal arms 7 will be held against lateral displacement on the pick 5 in one direction. When the head 12 is threaded against the pick 5 and the conical portion 14 engages the recess 15 the lateral displacement of the pick on the V handle.
In Fig. 4 I have illustrated a modified form of the invention comprising a pick 19 which is formed with transversely extending and longitudinally spaced dove-tailed grooves or recesses 20 in which the dovetailed. lugs 21 of the attaching arms 22 snugly fit, said attaching arms extending laterally of the ferrule 23 which receives the handle 24 in the usual manner. The attaching arms 22 of the ferrule 23 are threaded to receive the jam pins 25 which are formed with conical end projections 26 adapted to fit in recesses 27 of the pick 19. The jam screws 25 are formed with openings 25 whereby a suitable pointed tool can be inserted in the heads of said screws 25 and the screws manipulated. When the dove-tailed lugs 21 are inserted in the recesses 20 and the jam screws 25 threaded against the pick 19 the said ax will be held against lateral displacement on the attaching arms 22, while the ax will be' held against longitudinal displacement by said dove-tailed lugs 21.
In Fig. 5 I have illustrated another modified form of the invention comprising an ax 28 which is formed with a longitudinally extending recess 29 in one side thereof and which is also formed with confronting lugs 30 longitudinally spaced from each other. The lugs 31 of the attaching arm 32 of the ferrule 33 fit against the bottom wall of the recess or slot 29 and snugly engages the lugs 30 of said ax 28. The attaching arms 32 of the ferrule 33 extend at an angle outwardly of said ferrule and are spaced apart from each other to accommodate the jam screw 34 which is provided with a conical end projection 35 fitting tightly into a conical recess 36 in the art 28. The jam screw 34 is also formed or provided. with a head 37 having transverse openings 38 therein whereby the screw 34 may be manipulated. When the head 37 occupies its innermost position on the ferrule 33 the lugs 31 may be moved into locking engagement with the lugs 30 of the ax 28 and by manipulating the screw 34 the ax can be secured against lateral displacement through the engagement of the conical pin 35 of the recess 36 of said ax 28.
In Fig. 6 another modification of the invention is illustrated comprising a ferrule 39 which is formed with laterally extending arms 40 on which the screws 41 are threaded. Each of the jam screws 40 is formed with a head 42 and a conical end projection 43 adapted to snugly fit into i ends of said ax 45. When the jam screws 41 are brought into their innermost positions on the arms 40 of the ferrule 39 the lug or terminal 47 of the attaching arm 46 may be moved transversely on the an and when the jam screws 41 are forced tightly against the ax 45 said aX will be held against longitudinal displacement as well as lateral displacement.
By means of the improved fastening device an ax can be readily removed from its handle when desired so that the terminals of the ax can be sharpened, by simply operating the jamscrew means.
What is claimed is In combination with an ax having transversely extending and longitudinally spaced recesses therein and a recess intermediate said recesses, a handle attaching member having outwardly branching arms terminating in enlarged heads adapted to be seated in said spaced apart recesses, said member having a longitudinally extending bore intermediate between said arms, a nut seated in said bore and held against rotation therein, and a jam screw threaded by one end in said nut and-adapted to engage by its other end in the intermediate recess of the ax to prevent lateral displacement of the same on said arm, said screw being provided intermediate its length with a pin receiving head which in clamped position bears against the head of the air.
