My invention relates to improvements in washing machines, and its ob3ect .is to furinvention may be practically embodied, and
nish an improved construction and arrangement of operating parts in such machines, with a view to economy in the cost of manufactu're and durability and efiiciency in use. Toaccomplish the foregoingobjects, my invention consists in the features of'construction and in the combination of parts and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and-claimed.

Referring now to thedravvings, it will be seen (Figs. I and II) that the gearing for.
actuating the agitator in the tub 3 is mounted on the hinged door 2, and that this gearing is operatively associated with the lever I pivotally mounted on a bracket 5 which is secured to the side of the tub. A fourarm bearing plate 6 is mounted on the door 2 and may be secured thereto by the bolt '7,

A pinion '12 'journaled on the bearing plate and below cross piece 9 has a shaft 13 which extends through the bearing plate and'the door into the tub Where it is secured to a wide flattened extension 14 at its lower end, which extension fits loosely into the agitator head 15 so that the latter may move. longitudinally of such extension.- In. meshwith the pinion 12 is'a substantially elliptical member 16 which is provided with teeth on its interior centrally of one of its long sides andis pivotally mounted at the center part 18 of itsother long side, on a stud 19, of suitable material,
which is secured to one of the arms of the bearing gplate. To provide a .reducetL amount of bearirl" surface for the elliptical member 16 a portion 20 of the bearing plate is ridged. On the long side opposite. to its pivotal po'inuthe elliptical member 16 is provided with a short arm 1.7- to' which is pivoted one end'of the pi'tman 21. The pitman rests on andhas its movement guided v by the bracket 22 secured on the top of the tub at its front part. The. other end of the pitman is shaped substantially like an inverted l-J whereby it is ada ted to fitover'a round cross bar '24 secure to the bifurcations of the bracket 25 on the operating lever so that a loose mechanical connection may be effected-between the pitman and the operating lever and thus roviding a means for readily associating. t e -pitman :operatively with the lever and for automatically disengaging it from operative connection with the lever upon the raising of the door 2 of the tub. "The Walls of the guiding-portion of the bracket 22 diverge from the center to the ends to permit free angular movement of the rod on thebracket.
The operating lever t at its lower end'below its pivotal point is provided with an extension 26 which abuts against the lower portion of the bracket 5 to limit the downward movement of'the lever when it is disengaged from the pitman 21. a
r The operation of the parts thus far described,.is as follows: When the door of the tub is opened to place. the. contents therein, the pitman associated with the operating lever is automatically detached therefrom; aftenthe contents have been placed in the tub and the door'isiclosed, the inverted U-v I tub.

It will thus be seen, with the above arrrangement of mechanism, that when the opcrating lever is oscillated, an alternating rotary motion is communicated to the agi 'tator head while a continuous rotaly motion is communicated to the ii wheel.
As will be gathered from the foregoing, the tub 3 constitutes one supporting means for my novel mechanism.
While I have herein described one forn'r in which I have Worked out my invention for practical purposes, I do not desire .to be limited to the exact details of construction shown and described since many changes in the details of construction and arrangement and combination-,1 0t parts as set forth will occur to a person skilled in the art and which are intended to fall within the purview of the claim appended hereto.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
An operating device for washing machines, comprising a body, an upright mounted in the body, a pinion thereon, a rack on top of the body in mesh with the pinion, a pitman connected with said rack and having its other end provided with a vertically arra'hged slot open at its bottom, a gear wheel mounted above said rack, a balance wheel above said gear Wheel, a pin ion connected wit-h the balance wheel, and in mesh with said gear wheel, a pitman pivoted to said gear wheel and also to the first mentioned pitman near its outer end and a lever fulcrumed to the body and having a lateral extension provided with a pin designed to enter the slot in the pitman so that the pitman may be elevated to disen gage it from the operating lever, for the purposes stated In Witness whereof, I have hereunto subscribed my'nam'e in the presence of two witnesses. v
