One object of the invention is to provide a computing machine having an` ilnin'oved means for accurately adding and subtracting anyp series of numbers.

Arranged parallel with the shafts 14 and revolubly mounted in the -tallies 4 and 5 are' a series of vertically disposed shafts 16 on which and the shafts 14 are mounted spur gears 17 each of which contains thirty-two teeth. On each of the shafts 2O is tixedly mounted a spur gear 21 said gears each having thirty teeth. The gears 27 each have ten teeth and are provided on their upper sides with dials 28 having thereon numerals from 1 to 10, said numerals being disposed over the teeth of the gears Q7 as shown. On the plunger 45 is arranged a knob or head between which and the ybracket 4,6 is arranged a coiled retracting spring 4l' whereby the plunger is retracted and normally held out of engageient with the teeth of the gear 44. By providing the plunger 45 the roller ma)T be turned. certain distance at a time thus providing for the proper spacing of the paper for printing the lines or columns ot figures.
Slidably mounted in slots 48 formed :in the en d plates 38 is a roller supporting rod or shaft 4E) on which are arranged pressure or tension rollers 50 held in vielding engagement with the paper supporting roller 41 by springs 51 arranged cn the opposite ends of the plates 38 as shown. By thus engaging the roller with the paper supporting roller the latter will be prevented from being turned too far in either direction when operated by the spacing mechanism hereinbefore described. On the shaft or rod 48 is also secured a curved paper holding and guiding plate 52 having on its outer tudinally disposed paper guiding slot 54 s" the tally 7 along one edge of which the plate is bent downwardly to form a paper engaging flange 55 whereby the paper lis heldy against slipping on the roller. in, the guidefplate on opposite sides of the slot 54 are formed loi'igitudinally disposed type receiving slots 56 through which. the type are projected by the plungers 30 and the impression` of the type thus made on the paper'.`
In addition to the adding and subtracting mechanism hereinbefore described I preferably also employ a multiplying and dividf ing mechanism which is operatively connected with the adding and subtracting mechanism and comprises a tally 57 in the form of a rectangular oblong frame or Casing, arranged adjacent to one end of the main casing l to which said tally casing 57 is hingedly connected at one. corner as shown at 58. The tally 57 when thus connected is adapted to be swung into and out 'of operativeposition with respect to the main casing l and is adapted to be adjustably fastened at "its free end to the adjacentside of the casing lby a latch plate 59 pivotally secured at one end to the end of the tally casing 57 and having formed near its outer end two notches 60 either one of which is adaptedto be engaged with a fastening pin 6l thereby adjustably securing this end of y to the main casing l.. ' Revolubly mounted in one end of the tally casing 57 is a vertically disposed main drive shaft G3 and a series of similarlymounted gear supporting shafts 64. On the shafts 63 at the'bot'tom of the tally isxedly mounted av ratchet gear 65 with which is engaged an operating pawl 66 said pawl being pivotally connected to the inner end ofan operating lever 67 which is pivotally mounted on the bottom of the tally casing 57 and projects through a slot 68 formed therein and through a similar slot 69 formed in the adjacent end of the casing l. The pawl 66 is held in operative engagement with the teeth of the ratchet gear 65 by a spring 70. The lever 67 projects into the `casing a suitable distance and engaged with a recessed, trip lug 7l arranged on the adjacent end of the tally 4 whereby eachy time said tally is swung laterallyto disengage the pinion l5 of: the computing mechanism therein from the maindrive gear7 the lever 67 will be tripped and the'niove'ment thereof imparted tothe ratchet 65 by the pawl 66 tl'lereby turning said ratchet tothe distance ofone tooth. The recess in the lugs 7l and the outer edge of' the lugy onv 4each side of the recess aswell as thefengaging end of lever 67 are rounded so that these parts will play smoothly on each other yand will be prevented from binding when the tally A4 isswung outwardly inthe manner described. rl`he ratchetgear 65 is held against retrograde movement by a stop pawl '72 plvn otally mounted. in thebo-ttom of the tally"V casing 57 as shown.
On the shafts 64 are tixedly mounted a i series. of spur gears '73 each of which con tains thirty-two teeth. On the ratchet gear l 65 and onv eachv of the gears 73 except the last are arrang'redl annular series of concentrically disposed upwardly projecting pins 74 saidgears and pins corresponding to the gears 17 and pins 18 on theshafts l'of the tallies 4 and 5. The upper' ends of the shafts 64 project through thetop of the tally casing 57 andjhave fixedly mounted thereon circular dial'plates'75 on .which are arranged an annular series of numerals from l to l0. `Onthc upper side of the tally cas-y ing 57 in line with the center of each of the shafts 64 is arranged a iixed pointer 76 which coacts `with the numerals on `the dials 7 5.
Revolubly mounted in the tally ycasing 57 between the shafts 64 are a series of ver tically disposed counter shaftsy 77 on each of which is Xedly mounted a spur gear 78. The gears78 each containV thirty vteeth and are adapted to operatively engage the annular series of pins74 on the gears 73 `each of said series containing twelve pins. Arranged on each of thegears 78 is anannular series of concentric vertically disposed pins 79 each series of which `contains eight pins.l The pins 79 are operatively engaged with the teeth of the gears 73. on the shafts 7 4l whereby said shafts are operatively connectedtogether to turn atthe proper relai 57 swung outwardly thus disengaging the lever 67 from the trip vlug 7l-on the tally 4 of the adding and subtracting mechanism.

this relation being carried out throughout the entire series of dials. lVith the foregoing in mind to use the machine for adding for example the following columns of numbers representing the debit and credit sides of an account. 2-5; 3-5-4-0--1-0; 5-8-6- 0-6-5 2; 1-'1-4-3-#1-8. The dials of the two tallies 4 and 5 are adjusted to bring the naughts thereon opposite to theprinting spaces in the frames or casings of the tallies after which both of the tallies are brought into position to engage the computing gear pinions 15 thereof into engagement with the main operating gear 7 in which position the tallies 'are fastened by the binding nuts 23 hereinbefore described. With the' parts in this position the rst number l-5-9-2-5 is registered on the dials by turning the crank handle 11 in the proper direction to drive the main gear 7 and pinions 15 thus operating the series of gears in the tallies which operation is continued until the next to the last dials at the opposite ends of the tallies from the driving mechanism are turned to bring the number 1 .thereon opposite to the printing spaces 33 in the dial frames. When this number has thus been obtained the same is printed from thev tally 5 by pressing the type plunger opposite the number 1 until said number is printed on the paper of the printing roller. After this number has thus been obtained and printed the gears are again operated in the manner described until each of the succeeding numbers 5-9--2-5 are brought by the successive dials opposite their printing spaces in the tally plates and are printedfrom the tally onto the paper. After this number has thus been obtained the plunger V45 is depressed to turn the printing roller and paper to the distance of one space to receive the next number to be added. After the roller has thus been shifted the machine is in readiness to be adjusted for recording the next number to be added. In the operation of adding the next number it is necessary to retain the iirst number on one of the tallies and in order to retain this number the binding nut'of ,the tally 4 is loosened and said tally swung laterally to disengage the compu-ting pinion 15 thereof from the main operating gear 7 while the. latter is being reversed or turned backward to bring the dials of the tally 5 into their originalposition wherein 0 will appear opposite to the printing spaces of all the dials. After; the
, dials of the tally 5 have thus been adjusted 4whereupon the machine is in readiness to record' the next numberv 3-5-4--0-1- 0. Withthe parts in this positionthe operat- The dbit., 1 5-9-v ing mechanism is again started and the number 3-5-74-0-1-0 is successively registered on the dials of the tally 5 and printed on the paper in the manner described. Vhile thus registering this number on the dials of the tally 5 the same will be added to -the number previously registered on the dials of the tally 4. After this number has been thus registered and printed on the tally 5 and added to the tally 4 the latter is again swung out of engagement with the operating mechanism while the dials of the tally 5 are run back to show naught opposite the printing spaces in the tally casing whereupon the tally 4 is again .swung back into an operative position and numbers on the credit side of the account are now added and recorded in exactlyd the same manner as described in connection with the adding of the debit side of the account and when thus added and recorded will show a total of 9-0-7-0-0-(l. In order to obtain the balance it is necessary to subtract the` 9-0-7-0-0-0 from the 9-5-6-0-0-0 which operation may be accomplished on the machine in the following manner: The 9-0-7--0-0-0 representing the total amount of the credit side of the account is left on the tally 4 and this tally is swung out of engagement with the operating mechanism while the tally 5 is operated to show 9-5-6-0-0-0 whichis the total amount formerly obtained for the debit side of the account. IVhen the dials on the tally 5 show this amount the tally 4 is swung back into engagement with the operating mechanism and the latter turned in a reverse direction until all of the dials of the tally 4 containing the smaller number will show naught opposite the printing spaces of the tally casing thus indicating that all this number has been run off whereupon the number showing on the dials of the tally 5 will indicate the balance or difference between the two numbers and will be seen to be 4-6-0-0-0. By this operation it will be readily seen how the machine may be employed for subtracting any number from another larger number.
In order to use the machine for multiplyingl and dividing it is necessary to employ the thirdtall-v 57 which is connected with the tally 4 and operated by the lateral movement of the latter' in the manner described. Assuming that it is desired to multiply ing 3+00-0 tive times it is irst necessary to have the dialsot all the tallies 4 and 5 and all showing naughtI opposite the printing spaces or in the ease ot the tallyT 57 `opposite the pointers 7G thereon.` The tallies 41- and 5 are thus both operatively Aconnected 'with the computing mechanism and the lever 67 is engaged with the lugs 71 on the ytally 4. With the parts in this position the crank lll is rotated and the operating or 'computing mechanism thus driven until the number 3-0--0-0 is added or indicated on tallies 4 and After this number has thus been registered the tally l is swung laterally out oit' engagement .vith the oper ating mechanism and in thus moving Will trip the lever 67 and cause the -paivl G6 to turn the ratchet gear and shatt to the distance of one tooth which will bring the number 2 on the dial ot the shaft 03 opposite to thepointer of said dial, the dial on the shaft G3 having been previously turned by the lever 67V during thepreliminary adjustment ot the tally to bring the lthereon opposite to the pointer of the dial. Vith the tally thus swung out of engagement with the operating meehanismthe latter is turned in the opposite direction until the dials on the tally 5 again show naught opposite the printing spaces thereof. The tally 4: is then swung' back into engagement With the operating mechanism and the latter ractuated to again. register 3000 on the dials of the tally 5 and to add thisamount to the previous 3000 recorded on the dials oi the tally t. Then thisnumber has thus been recorded vthe tally 4 is again sivung out ot engagement with the operating mechanism and in soymoving will trip the levers 07 and cause the saine to again turn the ratchet gear 65` and shaft 63 to the distance' ot one tooth thus bringing the number 2 oppo site to the pointer on the tally 57. The operating mechanism is then reversed to bring the: dials ot' the tally 5 back tonaughtafter which the tally Il is again swung into opera 'i tive position and the operation ot the device continued in the manner described until 63 in the tally- 57.; After thus completing.

Before the tally 4L is connected up for operation the dials thereon are adjusted to show 1:5000 ivhile the dials of the tally 5 are adjusted to show 3000. lith the dials ot the tallies in thisposition, the operating mechanism is turnedin a reverse direction from that in which the same is turned tor adding until tl e dials on the tally 5 are run haelt to shovv naught opposite the printing spaces thereof. In this operation the dials ot the tally l are also run back in the same proportion so that 12000 ivill be indicated on this tally. After this operation the tally et is swung out ot engagement with the operating mechanism thus .aetuating the ,lever 67 and causing the same to turn the ratchet gear G5 and shaft 63 in the tally 57 to 'the distance ot one toot-h thus causing the tally on said shaft 63 to show number 2 opposite the pointer ot said dial, the dial having been previously turned to show the number l. bythe `outward p reliminary movement oi the tallyf. While the tally i is thus swung out. the operating mechanism is actuated to again shovv 3000 on the tally 5. rthe tall) 4; is then swung back into engagement. vwith the operating mechanism which. is actuated in the same erating mechanism the dial 5 is operated to A again register e000 and the dial 4 sivung, back into operative position when the previ.l
ousvoperations ot the device are repeated until the dials on the tally 4t. ivill showl naught at which time itwill be seen that the dial on the shattI 63 ot the tally 57 will show 5 which will indicate that V3000 is con.-` tained in 15000 live times.
The invention as herein shown and de- 'scribed is -for the purpose ot iulding. subtracting, multiplying and dividing. ,It obvious hoivever that the machine may be employed for various other purposes such tor instance'as a cash register or as a recorder tor registering and printing various series or arrangements ot numbers.

Having thus described my invention what I claim is:
l. Ina computing machine, the combination of a casing, a master gear in the casing, an inner casing, a train of computing gears in the inner casing, a vertical shaft of said train projecting above and below the inner casing, gearing connecting the lower end of the vertical shaft with the master gear, a series of disconnected revoluble dials carried by the inner casing, a gear attached to each dial and adapted to engage a correspondingly located gear of the train, and means for throwing the gear of the train out of connection with'the master gear.

In a computing machine, the combination of a casing, a master gear in the casing, an inner 4casing pivotally mounted in the main casing, atrain of computing gears in the inner casing, a vertical shaft of said train projecting above and below the inner ca-sing, gearing connecting the lower end of the vertical shaft with the master gear, a series of disconnected revoluble dials carried by the inner casing, means for throwing vthe gear of the train out of connection with the master gear, and means for moving the inner casing on its pivot to disconnect it from the master gear.
3. Ina computing machine, the combination of a main casing, a master gear journaled there-in, two inner casings within the main casing, a train of computing gears in eachl inner casing, a vertical shaft included in each of said trains projecting above and below the inner casing, gearing on the lower end of each vertical shaft adapted to engage the master gear, a series of disconnect* ed revoluble dials in each inner casing, a 'gear for each dial of each series adapted to lengage a corresponding gear in its computing train, and means for throwing the.
gears of the train of either of the inner casings out` of engagement with the master gear.
4f. In a computing machine, the combination of a main casing, a master gear jour naledtherein, two independent inner casings pivotally connected to the walls of the main Y casing, a train of computing gears in each inner casing, aA vertical shaft included in each train projecting above and below its inner casing, gearing connecting the lower end of each vertical shaft independently of the master gear, a series of disconnected revolubie dials carved by each inner casing, a
gear for each dial adapted to engage a correspondingly located gear of its respective computing train, means for moving either of the inner casings on its pivot to disconnect its train of gearing from the master gear, and means for securing the casings in their disconnected positions.
5. In a computing machine, the combination of a. main casing, an inner casing pivoted to the walls of the main casing, a train of computing gearing in the inner casing, a series of dials carried by the inner casino', a gear for each dial, engaging a corresponding gear in the train, a master gear wheel in the main casing, means for moving the inner casing on its pivot for connecting or disconnecting each of the trains of gearing with the master wheel, an outside casing adjacent and pivoted to the main casing, a series of registering dials carried by the outside casing and connections whereby the movements of the inner casing to disconnect its gear with -the master wheel are registered on the dial on the outside casing.
6. In a computing machine, the combination of a main casing, a master gear therein, an inner casing pivoted to the walls of the main' casing, computing gear in the inner casing adapted to be connected with or disconnected from the master gear wheel, an outer casing carrying a series of registering dials including a ratchet wheel, a lever pivoted in the outer casing and projecting through its wall and the wall of the main casing, a lug on the inner casing engaging one end of said lever and a spring pawl pivoted at the other end of the lever and engaging the ratchet in the outside casing.
In a computing machine, the combination of a casing provided with a lateral eX- tension of its cover, a series of computing gearing in the casing, a series of disconnected dials journaled in the extension of the cover of the casing, a gear carried by each dial and engaging a corresponding gear in the computingtrain, a series of numbers from O to 9 on each dial and an independent spring retracted type carrying plungers slidably mounted in each dial adjacent to the corresponding gures thereon.
8. In a computing machine, the combination of a casing, a train of computing gearing therein, a lateral extension of the cover' of the casing having its outer edge inclined upwardly and provided with a series of notches, paper rolls mounted below the inclined portion, a series of registering dials journaled on the extension of the cover, a
. pivot of each dial being in line with one of the notches and each dial being provided with numbers from 0 to 9, and a series of spring retracted type plungers slidably, mounted in each dial adjacent to the corresponding figure on the dial, concentric with the pivot of the dial and at the same distance therefrom as the notch in the inclined pordial mounted on a vertical pivot, ay paper tion of the casing cover.
