WASHING-MACHINE.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EDWARD L. Goonwnv, of Portland, in the county of Ionia, and in the State of Michigan, have invented a certain new. and useful Improvement in WVashing-Machines, and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.

The object of my invention is to provide a washing machine which will be of very simple construction, and will require a minimum of labor for operating it, and which will wash the. clothes rapidly and efficiently and without undue wear upon the same, and to these ends my invention consists in the washing machine constructed substantially as hereinafter specified and claimed.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a washing machine embodying my invention; Fig. 2 a longitudinal section thereof, and Fig. 3 a detail view in side elevation of the roller handle and portions of the straps attached thereto.

In the embodiment of my machine illustrated in the drawings, I employ a supporting frame 10 that is composed of two side members having an A-shape, and between them I hang a tub 11, preferably of galvanized iron, by means of parallel supporting rods 12 pivotally connected to the bottom of the tub and pivoted at their upper ends to the frame sides, so that by the application of power to the tub, as by means of the hands upon a handle 13, at one end thereof, the tub may be moved back and forth. Suspended from a cross bar 14 that rests at its opposite ends in socket plates 15 on the respective sides of the frame, is a roller 16 composed of a series of longitudinally extending parallel slats, preferably of wood, and disks, also preferably of wood, to which the slats are connected, the roller-suspending means consisting of a metal strap or bar 17 at each end that pivots or journals the roller shaft. The strap 17 is bent horizontally to form a means of bolting it to the cross bar 14, and then downwardly and inwardly to provide a metal bearing for engaging the socket 15. The roller rests upon the top of the clothes in the tub, and in consequence of the reciprocating or to and fro motion of the tub, the roller is revolved by the contact of the clothes therewith, and its slats act by a pressing or rubbing operation Specification of Letters Patent.

on the clothes. The roller-supporting bar, of course, may be readily placed in and out of position in the socket plates, and may rise and fall during the operation of washing.

Attached to the tub at one side is a vertical handle bar 18 having a weight 19 attached to it at or near its upper end to facilitate the movement of the tub. The tub is provided with an emptying cook 20 at one end near its bottom.

In its bottom, the tub has a rack 21 of wood, and to fasten it in position at the bottom of the tub against a levitating tendency, when water is present therein, I employ suitable fastening means, such as turn buttons 22. When the scrubbing roller is removed which may conveniently be done by using the cross bar 14 as a handle and some of the heavier pieces of clothes, the rack when released will rise to the surface of the water in the tub and bring with it the smaller, lighter pieces of clothes.

To facilitate moving the machine from place to place, as from one part of a room to another, I provide casters 23 that are adapted to be raised and lowered, as by being mounted on a rock shaft 24 at each side of the frame, which shaft may be oscillated by a hand lever 25 to place the casters in and out of position to engage the floor.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. In a washing machine the combination of a supporting frame composed of two side members, a tub movable to and fro endwise between said side members, bearing plates on each side member at the top thereof, a cross bar extending from one plate to the other having opposite ends vertically slidable in bearings on the plates, a metal strap fastened to said cross bar near each end thereof, said strap thence extending downward into the tub, and a scrubbing roller rotatably mounted at the lower end of said metal straps, said roller being free to move vertically with the cross bar and being wholly removable from the tub, said plates and the parts slidably engaging the same, being wholly outside the tub.

In a washing machine the combination of a supporting frame composed of two side members, a tub movable to and fro endwise between said side members, bearing plates on each side member at the top thereof, a cross bar extending from one plate to the other having opposite ends vertically slidable in bearings on the plates, a metal strap fastened to said cross bar near each end thereof, said strap thence extending downward into the tub, a scrubbing roller rotatably mounted at the lower end of said metal straps, said roller being free to move vertically and being wholly removable from the tub, said plates and the parts slidably engaging the same, being wholly outside the tub, and a levitating rack detachably connected with the tub, said rack rising when released from the buoyant effect of the water, whereby articles of clothing resting thereon may be lifted when the scrubbing roller is removed from the tub.
