To all whom it may concern Be it known that l, Wnmmn M. .lisrobu, a citiacn ot the United States of America, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angcles, State of California, have invented a certain new and useful Apparatus for Constructingtoverings; and I do hereby, declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to apparatus for constructing coverings, more 1mrticularly a covering suitable for use in buildings or "For and it may be said novel teatures, and in the novel and improved constrnction, arrangement and combination of parts as will be apparent from the description and claims hereinafter.
Objects of the invention are to provide novel and improved apparatus of the charactor specitied which is simple in construction, cheap to manufacture, eiiective in operation, and easy to manipulate.
Other objects and the advantages of the invention will be apparent. to those skilled in the art from a consideration of the following description of one form of construction in which the invention may be embodied, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings in which,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of apparatus having the invention embodied therein; Fig. 2 is a longitudii'ial sectional view of the apparatus shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is an elevation of a set of rollers for feeding the paper board; Figs. 4 and 6 show sectional fragmentary details of the distributing device, and Fig. 5 is a rear end elevation ol the apparatus taken at thelet't in Fig. 2 and showing the driving apparatus.
Referring to the drawings, the frame 2 of the apparatus may consist of side pieces 3 preferably of channel iron mounted on suitable supports 4 and having ailixed thereon a suitable bearing frame 5'. In suitable spring pressed bearings 6 mounted on the frame 5, is journaled a cylindrical barrel 7 provided with spaced teeth 8 disposed near its ends on the periphery thereof. A chute 9 preferably consisting of channels 10,
spaced apart to receive a plurality of laths 11 therebetweenv and to accommodate the end portions of the laths therein, is arranged above the barrel 7 to have the lower end oil the channels disposed adjacent to the periphery ot' the barrel T pret'eraoly in a vertical plane slightly to the rear ot a vertical plane through the center oil the barrel 7. At. the rear on the channels it) is provided a plate 12 having the lower end portion thereof in close proximity to the periphery ot the barrel and having a cutaway portion ill to provide a passageway tor the teeth S. Between the channel irons 3 of the frame 2 is arranged a platform or table 17 which has a cutaway portion to inwhich may be arranged swing-pressed rollers 19 for moving paper board 20 or other suitable material rearwardly on said platform. or table. Intermediate oi the feed rollers 1.9 and the barrel 7 is arranged a suitable device 21 for distributing on the top surface of the paper board asphalt mastic or other suitable composition having asphalt as the base.
As shown the distrilmting device 21 may consist ot a supply pipe 22 having a valve 23 therein and connected with any suitable tank or the like (not shown) for heating the asphalt mastic. A pipe 2-.t is connected with the supply pipe 22 and is arranged ad jaeent to and preferably in parallel with the platform or table 17 and provided with a. plurality of openings 25 therein. 26 provided with openings 28 therein may be arranged in a guideway 27 on the interior of the pipe 24, and it may have at one end thereof a handle 2.) for moving said plate against the stop 30 to have the openings 28 in-registr with the openings 25 to permit the aspha t mastic to tlow from the pipe 2 L to the top surface of the paper A plate board 20. A pipe 31 may pass through the pipe 24 for reheating the asphalt mastic in the pipe 24 by passing steam or other heating medium through said pipe 31.
Intermediate of the distributing device 21 and the barrel 7 may be arranged suit able means 32 for leveling to a uniform thickness the asphalt mastic applied to the surface of the paper board, said means in this instance consisting of uprightplates 33 arranged between the .Vertical sides 34;- extending upwardly from the platform or table 17, the front plate 33 having the lower edge thereof ata slighter greater distance from the top surface of the paper board than that of the rear plate. The sides 3st of the platform-or table 17 are adapted to contact with the side edges of the paper board to guide it in its movement on the platform or table and suitable guides 35 may be provided to hold said paper board down into close contact with the platform or table. Below the barrel 7 is arranged another barrel 86 mounted in bearings on the frame 5 and adapted in conjunction with the barrel 7 to cause the lath 11 to he messed into and partially embedded in the asphalt mastic distributed on the paper board as the laths arrive at the point.- where they are delivered at regular intervals to the paper board by the barrel 7.

It is to be noted that the lowermost lath in the chute fl rides on the teeth 8 when the latter pass thereumler and when the teeth reach the forward end portion of said latln. the rear end portion of the lath drops down to be engaged by the next teeth to the rear so that the lath falls readily into place in the space between the teeth and does not foul with the chute or with the lath next above it in the chute.
While one form of construction in which the invention may be embodied has been particularly illustrated and described, there are many changes and modifications thereof that will readily occur to those skilled in the art wherefore the right is reserved to all such changes and modifications as do not depart from the spirit and scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
I claim 1. In apparatus of the class specified, the combination of a cylindrical barrel, a chute consisting of channels spaced apart to re; ceive a plurality of laths therebetween and to accommodate the end portions of the laths therein, the lower end of said channels being disposed adjacent to the periphery of said barrel in a vertical plane slightly to the rear of a vertical plane through the center of said barrel, a table,means for moving paper board upon the table, means for distributing asphalt mastic onto the upper surface of said paper board, means including teeth on said'barrel and are shaped guides spaced therefrom for delivering at regular intervals laths from said chute to said paper board, and means for pressing and partially embedding the laths in the asphalt mastic on said paper board.

In apparatus of the class specified, the combination of a table, means for moving paper board upon the table, means for distributing asphalt mastic onto the upper surface of said paper boa-rd, a cylindrical barrel provided with spaced teeth disposed near its ends on the periphery thereof, a chute-com sisting of channels-spaced laths therebetween and to acort-ions of the laths therein, the lower end of said channels being disposed adjacent to the periphery of said barrel in a vertical plane slightly to the rear of a vertical plane through the said channels each provided on the rear thereof with a plate having the lower end portion thereof in close proximity to the periphery of the barrel, and having a cutaway portion to provide a passageway for said teeth, the front end of the lower end of said channels extending to about one-half the thickness of one of said laths above the end of said teeth, and adapted to hold the lowermost lath in said chute from forward movement while said teeth are passing under said lath, and means for commodate the end close contact with said ta apart to receive and a second pressing and partially embedding said laths in the asphalt mastic on said paper board.

In apparatus, 'of-the class specified, the combination of a table, means for moving paper board upon the table, means for dis: tributiiig asphalt mastic onto the upper surface of said paper board, means on said table to guide the paper board in its movement, means to hold said aper board in le, means for leveling to a uniform .thiekness'theasphalt mastic on said paper board, a chute consisting of channels spaced apart to receive a plurality of lathstherebetween and to accommodate the end portions of the laths therein, means for delivering at regular intervals laths from said chute to said aper board, the last means including a cylin rical barrel, provided with spaced teeth disposed near its ends on the periphery thereof and are shaped guides arranged to have the inner face thereof spaced from the periphery of said barrel at a su cient distance to serve for holding said lath's in position between the teeth'on the barrel as the barrel rotates to move the lath to deliver the lath substantially below the center of the barrel, barrel arranged below the first mentioned barrel and adapted in conjunction with the first mentioned barrel to cause the lathe to be pressed into and partially embedded in the asphalt mastic on the paper board.
