Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed January 27, 1912. Serial No. 673,833.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RAY IV. FRANKLIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Waterloo, in the county of Blackhawk and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Carriers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the in vention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in, carriers for carrying letters, parcels, etc., and consists in the provision of a simple and eflicient means of this nature so arranged that the carrier may be held at a position of rest and so arranged that mechanism may be actuated at a predetermined location for allowing the receptacle to be locked and released.
The invention comprises various details of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts which will be hereinafter fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings and then specifically defined in the appended claims.
I illustrate my invention in the accompanying. drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly in section, of my improved carrier. Fig. 2 is a view taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line 3 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4t is a section on line 1 -4 of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a bottom plan View thereof. Fig. 6 is a section on line 6-6 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 7 is a cross section on line 7-7 of Fig. 1. i
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the frame of the carrier which may be of any suitable material and which carries the receptacle or box. Said 'frame has an extension A to which the cup-shaped member' B is held by means of bolts B or other suitable fastenings, and has raceways B2 adapted to coperate with the race ways B3 formed in the annular groove in the lower part of the casting C, forming .the lower' part of the yoke C. Said casting has a pivotal pin D mounted therein, flanged at D and upon which pin the grooved wheel E is pivotally mounted. The web portion of said wheel is provided with a plurality of apertures E adapted to be engaged,
when in registration with the bearing F, with a longitudinally movable pin F', which latter is provided preferably with asquared head F2 notched as at F2, which latter is designed to be engaged by the marginal edge of' the cam Il, which is pivotally mounted upon a pin Il projecting from the upright portion of said yoke. Said cam member II has an integral handle H2, whereby the same may be tilted upon its pivot for the purpose of throwing the pin into or out of mesh with one orf said openings E.
Pivotally mounted upon a pin I in a bracket extension of the shank portion of the yoke is a tilting member I, having its upper end convexed as at I2 for the purpose of allowing the device to pass over a switch or other wire at an angle to the main line or cable K upon which the grooved pulley is adapted to travel.
A casting, designated by letter N, has trunnions N projecting therefrom at positions diametrically opposite and having bearings in the recesses N2 of the yoke, and said casting is recessed in its bottom for the reception of the upper end of the longitudinally movable tilting rod J which, at its lower end, is threaded as at J for adjustable connection with the bar J2 which is mounted in the standard J2, which latter preferably is hollow and is adapted to carry the receptacle or box J4. The upper end of the bar J passes through a pivotal pin J5 and its upper end engages a recess in the lower end of the casting N.
Fastened to the cable at intervals are the stop members, designated by letter M, one of which is shown in elevation and which is 'fastened to the cable or track in any suitable manner and, as the carrier apparatus comes in contact with the stop, the latter will cause the casting N to tilt and an upward longitudinal movement will be imparted to the bar J and raise the pin J5 a distance limited by the pin Q which moves in the slot Q in said standard J.
Fastened to the pin Q is a casting P which covers the vertically movable locking members R, each of which is convexed as at R upon its lower edge and their upright shank portions are provided with elongated slots R2 through which pins Itfpass.
Mounted upon the stationary bar L is a bracket S carrying an anti-friction roller S in the path of the lower end of' the locking member R, which latter is adapted to contact with the roller, which will cause the locking member to be raised a slight distance, the latter being guided by the lateral projections R5 in the slots R7 in the casting P, and afterward fall back to its normal position over the edge of the bearing in which the anti-friction roller is mounted. It will thus be noted that the two members R, one on either side of the roller, will serve to hold the carrier from moving in either direction until one or the other of the locking members is raised to clear the roller.
By the construction of a carrier apparatus embodying the features of my invention, it will be noted that a simple and etlicient means is afforded whereby the wheel may be held when not in use or at rest by means of the pin actuated longitudinally through the medium of a cam engaging a notch in the angled or squared end thereof, the vertically movable member uponL the casting serving to hold the car in a locked position and, through the medium of the tilting member mounted upon the yoke, the carrier apparatus will be held from running over the cable or track, while the stop will serve to automatically actuate the mechanism as it comes in contact with the tilting casting mounted upon the yoke and which is connected, through the medium of the bar, with the casting carrying the locking members.
That I claim to be new is E- l. A carrier apparatus comprising a frame, a yoke mounted thereon, a wheel carried by the yoke and having a web with apertures therein, a longitudinally movable pin for engagement with one or another of said apertures, means for moving the pin longitudinally, a tilting casting mounted upon the yoke, a bar pivoted thereto, and locking means actuated by said bar as the latter is raised by tilting of said casting mounted upon the yoke, as set forth.
2. A carrier apparatus comprising a frame, a yoke mounted thereon, a wheel carried by the yoke and having a web with apertures therein, a longitudinally movable pin for engagement with one or another of said apertures, means for moving the pin longitudinally, a tilting casting mounted .upon the yoke, a bar pivoted thereto, locking means actuated by said bar as the latter is raised by tilting of said casting mounted upon the yoke, and a tilting member pivotally mounted uponthe yoke and having its upper end conveXed, as set forth.

A carrier apparatus comprising a frame, a yoke mounted thereon, a wheel carried by the yoke and having a web with apertures therein, a longitudinally movable pin for engagement with one or another of said apertures, the head of the pin having a slot therein, a pivotal cam lever engaging said slot, a casting having trunnions thereon pivotally mounted in said yoke, a rod pivotally connected to said casting, a carrier bar adjustably connected thereto, a standard upon which said bar is mounted, a casting fastened to the standard, locking devices having their lower edges inclined and slots in their vertical portions, pins passing through said slots, an anti-friction roller journaled upon the bar and adapted/to contact with the lower inclined edge of the locking device, as set forth.
5. A carrier apparatus comprising a frame, a yoke mounted thereon, a wheel carried by the yoke and having a web with apertures therein, a longitudinally movable pin for engagement with one or another of said apertures, the head of the pin having a slot therein, a pivotal cam lever engaging said slot, a casting having trunnions thereon pivotally mounted in said yoke, a rod pivotally connected to said casting, a carrier bar adjustably connected thereto, a standard upon which said bar is mounted, a casting fastened to the standard, locking devices having their lower edges inclined and slots in their vertical portions, pins passing through said slots, an anti-friction roller journaled upon the bar and adapted to contact with the lower inclined edge of the locking device, ribs at the ends of said gravity locking devices, movable in guideways in the casting upon said standard, as set forth.
