Be it known that I; SPENCER subject of the King of GreatBrltain and have invented certainnew anduseiful Improvements'in Type- Writing Machlnes, of which the following is a specification.

and one which is particularly adapted for the ready attachment and detachment of the ribbon in roll form.
In many styles of typewriting machines the'spools on the machine on which the r1bbon is wound have mounted upon them de- 3 reverse of the ribbon or change in the direcvices which operate automatically when the ribbon is completely u nWound toefFect the tion of its longitudinal feed. These spoolcarried reversing devices make the spools comparatively expens1ve,' and consequently it is not commonly practicable to supply new spools of regular pattern with each ribbon but; instead, the ribbons are furnished on cheap supply spools and are wound therefrom on to the regularworking spools, an
operation which is both tedious and. timeconsuming and also soils the hands of the operator.

have preferred to show-it herein as applied" to a spool of a pattern adapted for usinf the Monarch typewriting machine and pro p vided with ribbon reversing devices of the? character employed in said machine and] disclosed in the patent to George B. Brand;

In the drawing, '1 indicates a circular-1"? disk-like spool' head or flange which in the present instance is the under or lower flange that is seated at the bottom of the usualk spool cup of the Monarch machine. The holes .10 are triangularly arranged in correspondence 119 with the posts 6 but the distance between them is slightly less than the distance between the posts when the flange 9 is detached. Consequently'when the flange 9 is applied-to the posts and the pointed heads, thereof engage with the holes 10 it will be necessary to ress the flange 9 downward or toward the ange l-with a' suflicient pressure to force the heads 7 toward each other far enough to permit them to pass through the holes 10, the posts 6, while substantially rigid, having sufficient spring or give for the purpose. Vhen the heads have passed through the holes the inherent spring in the posts will cause them to spring apart until the neck portions 8 engage with the Walls of the holes 10 at the points farthest from the axis of the spool as will be clearly understood from Figs. 2 and 3. The shoulders 11 formed by the junction of the bodies of the 'posts 6 with the associate necks 8 will limit the movement of the flange 9 toward the flange 1. VVit-h the holes 10 in cooperation with the necks 8 the flange 9 will'be confined between the shoulders 11 and the under side of the heads 7, and will be frictionally engaged with the necks 8.
Thus the flange 9 is frictionally connected to the hub portion of the spool, the construction being such that while the flange 9 maybe readily detached and attached, it is nevertheless when in place on the spool, securely connected thereto and maintained at a proper and predetermined distance from the flange 1 by the hub comprising the set of headed posts.
The spool proper' may be said to comprise the twofl'anges l and 9 and .the connecting hub portion orposts 6; but the spool contrivance or spool as a whole further comprises a detachable or disconnectible ribbon carrier, container or core device which is designed to fit loosely over the.hub portion or posts 6. The core device, which is clearly shown'in Fig. 5 where it is designated as a whole by the numeral 12, is preferably made of a single piece of sheet metal bent or folded to a general triangular shape and having its ends suitably connected as by a rivet 13. One of the sides 14 of the core device is depressed or bent inward toward the center and the ends of this side terminate in outward projections or lugs 15, each comprising two thicknesses or plies of the metal. One of the other sides is punched'to provide a set of prongs 16 or attaching devices for the inner end of the ribbon 17. The end of the ribbon having been attached to the core 12.
by being hooked over the prongs 16, its first fold or ply will, as clearly shown in Fig. 1, pass over and around the projections 15, thus providing a considerable space or opening designated as 18 in Fig. 1 between the inner face of the first ribbon ply and the face of the side or wall 14 of the core device.

a core device on which the ribbon is Wound, attachable so that the ribbonwill confine the reversing device to inoperative position but will when fully unwound release said device so that it may effect a reversal of the ribbon. 20.
