To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS HENRY Ros- SELL, a subject of the King of the United Kingdom of Great- Britain and Ireland, and resident of Clacton-on-Sea, Essex, England, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Can-Openers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to can openers and it has for its object to improve the construction thereof.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure I is a side elevation, Fig. II is a part elevation, part vertical section, and Fig. III is an end elevation of'a can opener constructed in accordance with the invention.
Referring to the drawings, the guard 1 is formed on the side nearestthe blade 2 with a groove 3 angular in cross-section and decreasing in depth from the forward end of the guardrearward; The edge 4 of the blade adjacent the guard is substantially parallel with the bottom of the groove 3, but lies in a different vertical plane. At a point in front of the forward end of the guard the edge 1 is rounded ofi to afford a shoulder 5 beyond which projects the pointed end 6 of the blade 2 forming a beak or prong adapted to pierce the can. The blade per se is of known form and has already been used in conjunction with other forms of can openers. A rivet 7 holds the blade in position in a central slot in the guard.
As shown, the cutting edgeu l is interrupted between the shoulder 5 and the point 6, so as to form a ledge for engagement with the can.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is A can opener comprising in combination with a handle, a guard projecting from said handle, a blade secured to said guard, said guard having a groove, said groove being angular in cross section and decreasing in depth from the forward end of the guard rearward, said blade having a cutting edge, said cutting edge adjacent the guard being substantially parallel with the bottom of the said groove but lying in a different vertical plane, and said blade having a shoulder, said shoulder formed on the blade at a point in front of the end of the said guard and said shoulder having a bull nosed beak projecting therefrom, as and for the purpose set forth. 7
